Bet on the kingdom not Jerusalem
In confrontation with Pharisees and the establishment of Jerusalem- it might seem Jesus "has go to be dreamin". But the kingdom is going to come slowly and people better not rest on their laurels and connection with Abraham.

Carry Your Cross
Much better to humble oneself now than to have to be humbled. In fact their self-exaltation means that they're likely to miss out. The kingdom will include the down and outers. You don't like that? Well - tough - you exclude yourself.

22 Mar Luke 15:1-31Ezekiel 34:11-24Lost and Found
The Pharisees on seeing Jesus accept sinners can't understand why Jesus bother. The Pharisees get a lesson about the father's heart for the lost, and revelation of their own heart.

29 Mar 1 Timothy 6:17-19Luke 16:1-13God and Money
Jesus tells a parable of a dishonest manager to urge his disciples to use money to win friends and influence people for the kingdom. This is contrary to conventional wisdom (v14-17) but this is what it means to be faithful and not be controlled by money

What can turn hearts turned away?
Jesus is derided for his views on use of money - evidencing Pharisees' love of money. They "stand" on the law but the very law they stand on points to him and the kingdom. They use the law for their own ends (divorce) but if they truly listened to the law they would not divorce and see the kingdom. WIth their hearts turned to money away from listening to the law, then will not listen to Jesus even if he rises from the dead.

The kind of king we need
David's united reign: highlights his covenant faithfulness as opposed to Saul, and his involvement in the preparation for the temple (e.g. capture of Jerusalem, ark’s entrance, even God’s covenant to David highlights David’s intention to build the temple but that task falling to his son)

18 Oct Luke 4:1-131 Chronicles 28:1-8
The kind of king to look forward to
David’s faults as a king are highlighted. His propensity to put himself before his people, even in violence disqualifies him from building the temple. The people look forward to a better king.

The kind of king we long for
The hope and expectation that Solomon would be better king than David seems to be realised according to the chronicler’s records. As opposed to the writer of Kings - Solomon is highlighted to have done everything according to the Lord. He brings happiness because of his wisdom.

When pragmatism is not good practice
Sinfulness is returned with punishment in the stories of the kings in a divided nation. Asa and Jehoshphat are pretty good kings, but they compromise where there should not.
