Writing Diary and Progress Tracker
3
4
What is this?
5
This document is a writing diary and progress tracker (obvs).

It's an easy way to document and visualise how many words you've written and how much time you've spent writing, by day and by project. It will calculate your Words Per Minute for you (among other things), and let you see your progess over long periods of time.

Fill in your writing totals to gain instant insights into how fast you're writing, how you work, what day of the week you are most productive, keep track of your cumulative total WC, etc.

How to Start
8
1 - Make a copy of this document - Go to File -> Make a Copy. (NOTE: This feature has been disabled by Google for some users. Use this link to make a copy.) This will make a private copy for you to use. Note: You must be logged into a google account to do this.
9
NOTE: Version 1.3 is slightly out of date (but should still work). Version 1.4 has updated dates and some general clean up. I'd recommend using that. VERSION 1.4
10
2 - Look through the sheets and tips carefully. Make sure you understand generally how the sheet works before manipulating the data.
11
3 - Delete the dummy data in the "Daily Diary" tab. This is all the data in the white columns. Do NOT delete anything from the grey columns.
12
4 - That's it! Your document is ready to use.
13
14
When you're ready to write
15
1 - Open the "Daily Diary" tab.
16
2 - Set today's date in the next empty slot of the date column. NOTE: Use the hotkeys "ctrl + ;". This is the easiest way and ensures the date is formatted correctly
17
3 - Enter your project title and set your starting word count.
18
4 - Set your start time (again, use the hotkeys "shift + ctrl + ;")
19
5 - Start writing.
20
6 - When you're done writing for that session. Enter your final word count and your finishing time. All the formulas should calculate your data for you. All the charts and graphs will also populate.
21
7 - If you have mutiple sessions for one day, just add another row with today's date. There's no limit to the amount of projects you can associate with a specific date.
22
23
Tips and Tricks
24
1 - Hover over column titles for tips and information.
25
2 - Learn the hotkeys for the time and date fields. It only takes a second, will make filling out the sheet VERY easy, and ensures all the time and date formats are correct.
26
3 - Tracking isn't meant to be a major hassle. If you aren't sure of your exact starting wordcount, try to get close, but move on. It's more important that you spend time writing!
27
4 - Bookmark the Daily Diary tab to save time when opening the document (you can bookmark by the tab, so you don't have to switch after opening it)
28
5 - If you're going to make large edits to the formulas, make a backup of your current sheet by making a copy, or by labelling your current version in the version history.
29
6 - Check out the Example Diary tabs for example uses.
30
7 - Like any data tracker (calorie counter, heart rate monitor, etc) the more data you have the more useful it becomes. Tracking for one day won't help you understand how you're working, but a month of data could be very illuminating (and also incredibly fun to look at)!

32
Troubleshooting
33
Remember you can always roll back to an old version of your sheet by going to File -> Version History -> See Version History. Then selecting a slightly older version.
34
Reach out to us! We're happy to try to troubleshoot with you, but we will likely need access to your sheet.
