Part I: Scholarship Categories Aligned with Recruitment and Retention Goals

5
The existing undergraduate scholarships in the College of Education, when combined with recruitment and retention goals for the CoE, are presented in four categories. A description of the four categories follows. Please note that students enrolled in UW's initial licensure programs, whether in Laramie or in Casper, will be considered for these awards.

1Recruitment and Retention: Diverse Students. These scholarships will be awarded to first year, new transfer, or continuing students, based first on the requirements of the individual scholarships and second on their ethnic, language, or other form of diversity. Where possible, we will use CAEP’s definition of diversity, which is the following: Diversity. (1) Individual differences (e.g., personality, interests, learning modalities, and life experiences), and (2) group differences (e.g., race, ethnicity, ability, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, nationality, language, religion, political affiliation, and socio-economic background) (InTASC Model Core Teaching Standards, p. 21). To determine students who might be eligible for these awards, CoE administrators and staff have worked with the Financial Aid Office to develop a set of questions that is presented to all Education majors when they log on to the Academic Works system. These questions address ethnicity and language and will be used to determine students who represent diversity and might be eligible for these awards. See Table 1 for the specific scholarships aligned with this recruitment/retention purpose, as well as amounts awarded.

2Recruitment: New First Year/Transfer Students. These scholarships will be awarded by Financial Aid beginning in November and continuing throughout the fall and spring semesters, to students who are declaring a major in education, who meet our CoE admissions requirements, and who also meet the requirements of the individual scholarships. Any scholarships that have not been accepted, as of May 1, will be re-awarded, focusing on incoming transfer students to the CoE. See Table 1 for the specific scholarships aligned with this recruitment purpose, as well as amounts awarded.

3Retention: Continuing Students: High Achievement. These scholarships will be awarded to sophomores, juniors, seniors, or graduate certificate (TSC/TES) students in the CoE, based first on the requirements of the individual scholarships, and second on high achievement. Achievement will be evaluated based on UW institutional GPA or on transfer GPA. Although need, as determined by FAFSA, will be taken into consideration, (ie., students without financial need as determined by FAFSA will not be eligible for scholarships), the primary consideration of this category of scholarships will be on retention of high achieving students in the College of Education. See Table 1 for the specific scholarships aligned with this retention purpose. as well as amounts awarded.

4Retention: Continuing Students: High Need. These scholarships will be awarded to sophomores, juniors, or graduate certificate (TSC/TES) students in the CoE, based first on the requirements of the individual scholarships, and second on high need, as determined by FAFSA. Although achievement is not the primary consideration of scholarships in this category, students receiving scholarships must have at least a 2.75 UW institutional GPA, which will ensure that they will be eligible to move forward in their selected education program. Need will be evaluated based on the FAFSA results submitted for each student. See Table 1 for the specific scholarships aligned with this retention purpose, as well as amounts awarded.
