book2017Lunn, Patricia Vining; Alkhas, Anita JonLearning French from Spanish and Spanish from French: a short guide.978-1-62616-425-3 978-1-62616-455-0
All human languages have some things in common, but certain languages--because of their shared history--have a great deal in common. Those commonalities can help a learner proficient in one of a pair of related languages learn the second language more quickly. This book will serve as a catalyst for adult English speakers who have learned either Spanish or French as an L2 and wish to learn the other language as an L3. The manual takes advantage of the fact that learners with intermediate proficiency in an L2 are used to thinking consciously about language, know themselves as language learners, and can capitalize on what they know about one language to understand the other. The manual contains seven chapters that present concise and linguistically accurate descriptions of the paired languages, provide targeted exercises with answer keys, and give many examples of each principle. Audio files help with pronunciation. Parallel texts are short readings that help illustrate contrasts and similarities. The book aims to accelerate the work of third-language learning for students, travelers, and budding multilingua.

Complexity in language: developmental and evolutionary perspectives978-1-316-94587-2 978-1-316-94491-2
http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=1475841
The question of complexity, as in what makes one language more complex than another, is a long-established topic of debate among linguists. Recently, this issue has been complemented with the view that languages are complex adaptive systems, in which emergence and self-organization play major roles. However, few students of the phenomenon have gone beyond the basic assessment of the number of units and rules in a language (what has been characterized as bit complexity) or shown some familiarity with the science of complexity. This book reveals how much can be learned by overcoming these limitations, especially by adopting developmental and evolutionary perspectives. The contributors include specialists of language acquisition, evolution and ecology, grammaticization, phonology, and modelling, all of whom approach languages as dynamical, emergent, and adaptive complex systems.

book2017Zheng, MeihuaA conceptual metaphor account of word composition: potentiality of "light" in English and Chinese978-1-4438-9141-7
"This book describes the emergence of new meanings in two languages, English and Chinese. Drawing on a corpus methodology, it presents metaphors as a basic instrument of thinking and cognition studies from a conceptual metaphor perspective, probing the compositional potentiality of “light” in English and Chinese, and highlighting the generative mechanism for word composition through metaphorization. The monograph includes detailed discussions of linguistic corpus construction, linguistic manifestations of metaphorization, the main motivation for the formation of metaphorical meanings, and socio-cultural influence in different languages. It expands the scope of previous studies and shows how conceptual metaphor studies can benefit from the use of a corpus methodology by providing not just a description, but an explanation, of how word composition develops. This book will be of interest to students and researchers interested in metaphor and intercultural studies, as well as cognitive linguistics, corpus linguistics and contrastive studies in English and Chinese."-- Back cover.

book2017Handbook of linguistic annotation978-94-024-0879-9 978-94-024-0881-2
This handbook offers a thorough treatment of the science of linguistic annotation. Leaders in the field guide the reader through the process of modeling, creating an annotation language, building a corpus and evaluating it for correctness. Essential reading for both computer scientists and linguistic researchers.Linguistic annotation is an increasingly important activity in the field of computational linguistics because of its critical role in the development of language models for natural language processing applications. Part one of this book covers all phases of the linguistic annotation process, from annotation scheme design and choice of representation format through both the manual and automatic annotation process, evaluation, and iterative improvement of annotation accuracy. The second part of the book includes case studies of annotation projects across the spectrum of linguistic annotation types, including morpho-syntactic tagging, syntactic analyses, a range of semantic analyses (semantic roles, named entities, sentiment and opinion), time and event and spatial analyses, and discourse level analyses including discourse structure, co-reference, etc. Each case study addresses the various phases and processes discussed in the chapters of part one

book2017Milani, Tommaso MLanguage and citizenship: broadening the agenda978-90-272-4279-2
This volume offers fresh, cutting-edge perspectives on issues of language and citizenship by casting a critical light on a broad spectrum of geo-political contexts - Flanders, Luxembourg, Singapore, South Africa, the UK - and discourse data - policy documents, newspaper articles, ethnographic notes and interviews, skits, bodies in protests. The main aims of the book are to investigate institutional discourses about the relationship between nationality and citizenship, and relate such discourses to more ethnographically grounded interactions; tease out the multiple and often conflicting meanings of citizenship; and explore the different linguistic/semiotic guises that citizenship might take on in different contexts. The book argues that the linguistic/discursive study of citizenship should not only include critical investigations of political proposals about language testing, but should also encompass the diverse, more or less mundane, ways in which various social actors enact citizenship with the help of an array of multivocal, material, and affective semiotic resources.

book2017Current Issues in Intercultural Pragmatics978-90-272-5679-9 978-90-272-6570-8
Having been established as a field in its own right for the last decade, intercultural pragmatics is increasingly being recognized as an important area of research among scholars working in pragmatics. The present volume is a collection of selected papers from the 6th International Conference on Intercultural Pragmatics and Communication - admittedly the biggest venue for researchers in the area, and comprises contributions that report on recent research that deals with or can directly inform work in intercultural pragmatics. Given the breadth of research areas that are represented herein, ranging from lingua franca and business communication to the study of cultural perceptions, translation and pragmatic development, this volume is bound to be of interest to not only students and scholars engaged in the area of intercultural pragmatics, but also to all those with a more general interest in the sociocultural turn in the study of pragmatics

book2017Dakin, Karen; Parodi, Claudia; Operstein, NatalieLanguage contact and change in Mesoamerica and beyond978-90-272-5950-9
Language-contact phenomena in Mesoamerica and adjacent regions present an exciting field for research that has the potential to significantly contribute to our understanding of language contact and the role that it plays in language change. This volume presents and analyzes fresh empirical data from living and/or extinct Mesoamerican languages (from the Mayan, Uto-Aztecan, Totonac-Tepehuan and Otomanguean groups), neighboring non-Mesoamerican languages (Apachean, Arawakan, Andean languages), as well as Spanish. Language-contact effects in these diverse languages and language groups are typically analyzed by different subfields of linguistics that do not necessarily interact with one another. It is hoped that this volume, which contains works from different scholarly traditions that represent a variety of approaches to the study of language contact, will contribute to the lessening of this compartmentalization. The volume is relevant to researchers of language contact and contact-induced change and to anyone interested both in the historical development and present features of indigenous languages of the Americas and Latin American Spanish.

book2017Zekavat, MassihSatire, Humor and the Construction of Identities978-90-272-0233-8
Satire, Humor and the Construction of Identities' conveys how satire can contribute to the construction of social subjects' identities. It attempts to provide a theoretical ground for a novel understanding of the relationship between satire and identity by finding their common denominator, namely opposition, in order to explain the mechanism through which satire can form identity. After establishing the role of opposition in satire and identity construction through a detailed analysis of various theories, it will be argued that satire can contribute to the construction of racial, ethnic, national, religious, and gender identities. Several examples from British, Persian and ancient Roman literary traditions and different epochs illustrate the theoretical discussions. The prevalence of satire and the challenges that identity has encountered in our contemporary world guarantee the significance of this study and its socio-political implications

book2017Dante Alighieri; Smith, Tim; Sonzogni, MarcoTo hell and back: an anthology of Dante's Inferno in English translation (1782-2017)978-90-272-1251-1
"Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) maintained that translation destroys the harmony of poetry. Yet his Commedia has been translated into English time and again over the last two-and-a-bit centuries. At last count, 129 different translators have published at least one canticle of the Italian masterwork since the first in 1782, and countless more have translated individuals cantos. Among them there are some of the finest poets in the English language, including Robert Lowell and the Irish Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney. Smith and Sonzogni have assembled and annotated two complete translations of Dante's most popular canticle, Inferno: 68 cantos each translated by a different translator. To Hell and Back is a celebration of the art and craft of poetry translation; of the lexical palettes and syntactical tempos of the English language; and, of course, of the genius of one of the greatest poets of all times" --

book2017Ungerer, FriedrichHow grammar links concepts: verb-mediated constructions, attribution, perspectivizing978-90-272-4673-8 978-90-272-6578-4
The proposed framework of 'concept linking' combines insights of construction grammar with those of traditional functional descriptions to explain particularly challenging but often neglected areas of English grammar such as negation, modality, adverbials and non-finite constructions. To reach this goal the idea of a unified network of constructions is replaced by the triad of verb-mediated constructions, attribution and scope-based perspectivizing, each of them understood as a syntactically effective concept-linking mechanism in its own right, but involved in interfaces with the other mechanisms. In addition, 'concept linking' supplies a novel approach to early child language. It casts fresh light on widely accepted descriptions of early two-word utterances and verb islands in usage-based models of language acquisition and encourages a new view of children's 'mistakes'

Constructing families of constructions: analytical perspectives and theoretical challenges978-90-272-6565-4
http://lib.myilibrary.com?id=1025683
Within Construction Grammar, this volume moves away from a compartmentalized view of constructions with the aim of providing a more holistic description of grammar. Thus, the book brings together analyses that look at constructional families within the "constructicon" of such languages as English, Spanish, German, Polish, Croatian, and Hungarian. Part 1 focuses on how different analytical perspectives may be applied to comparable and/or connected constructions with a view to enhancing our understanding of their similarities, differences, and relations. Part 2 contributes to the state of the art in Construction Grammar in three ways: (i) by reconciling aspects of various constructionist analyses; (ii) by determining to what extent competing constructionist perspectives can offer more adequate approaches to specific analytical needs; and (iii) by challenging central assumptions within Construction Grammar. This book is expected to encourage further research into the anatomy of constructional families and their interrelations in all domains of constructional organization.

book2016Daniel LassiterGraded modality. Qualitative and Quantitative Perspectives978-0-19-870134-7 978-0-19-870135-4
This book explores graded expressions of modality, a rich and underexplored source of insight into modal semantics. Studies on modal language to date have largely focussed on a small and non-representative subset of expressions, namely modal auxiliaries such as 'must', 'might', and 'ought'. Here, Daniel Lassiter argues that we should expand the conversation to include gradable modals such as 'more likely than', 'quite possible', and 'very good'. He provides an introduction to qualitative and degree semantics for graded meaning, using the Representational Theory of Measurement to expose the complementarity between these apparently opposed perspectives on gradation. The volume explores and expands the typology of scales among English adjectives and uses the result to shed light on the meanings of a variety of epistemic and deontic modals. It also demonstrates that modality is deeply intertwined with probability and expected value, connecting modal semantics with the cognitive science of uncertainty and choice.

book2017Arends, JacquesLanguage and slavery: a social and linguistic history of the Suriname creoles978-90-272-6580-7
http://lib.myilibrary.com?id=1025689
This posthumous work by Jacques Arends offers new insights into the emergence of the creole languages of Suriname including Sranantongo or Suriname Plantation Creole, Ndyuka, and Saramaccan, and the sociohistorical context in which they developed. Drawing on a wealth of sources including little known historical texts, the author points out the relevance of European settlements prior to colonization by the English in 1651 and concludes that the formation of the Surinamese creoles goes back further than generally assumed. He provides an all-encompassing sociolinguistic overview of the colony up to the mid-19th century and shows how ethnicity, language attitude, religion and location had an effect on which languages were spoken by whom. The author discusses creole data gleaned from the earliest sources and interprets the attested variation. The book is completed by annotated textual data, both oral and written and representing different genres and stages of the Surinamese creoles. It will be of interest to linguists, historians, anthropologist, literary scholars and anyone interested in Suriname.
