Using the Workload Tracking Grid

Track all assigned hours: Track all hours you spend completing job duties as you go, including job duties completed before the quarter starts. The earlier you start tracking your hours, the better, as this is both more accurate and helps catch potential issues earlier.

Estimate early: You can also use this sheet to anticipate hours you will work in the future. Record all hours that you expect to perform the work for your job this quarter. Include all tasks relevant to the job in the appropriate column. If you're not sure, use your best estimate of the time you'll spend on each task each week. Remember to take into account university holidays; if there are no classes that day, don't include lectures or sessions on that day.

Know your rights: Your offer letter should state your workload for the quarter. For a typical RA or TA appointment, this workload is 220 hours per quarter (about 20 hours per week, with the expectation that some weeks will be busier than others). You cannot be required to work unpaid hours. Article 34 of our contract states: "Assigned workload is measured by how many hours the University could reasonably expect an ASE to take to satisfactorily complete the work assignment so as to maintain excellence in teaching, research, and service. An ASE should initiate discussions with her/his supervisor as soon as s/he anticipates any workload related issues that would result in working more than 220 hours in a quarter. Before workload hours are exceeded, the Department will offer the ASE additional paid hours for the excess workload or relieve the ASE of the excess workload." (https://bit.ly/2QMJXXx)

Get support: If you find you're going over your average workload for a few weeks in a row, or if you have other concerns about workload, email contractenforcement@uaw4121.org. The earlier potential issues are flagged, the easier they tend to be to resolve.
