Very worthwhilereadBy Jon ArcherI very much enjoyed this book, which was asurprise to some extent -- although I was eager to learn aboutDICOM I fully anticipated a very dry, dull book. Luckily that isnot the case. Moreover, the detailed explanations were great for meas a software developer now working on a DICOM application.Part I -Introduction to DICOM provides a light but good overview.Part II -DICOM and Clinical Data, after some brief history, gets right intothe guts of what DICOM looks like, down to the bytes in a DICOMobject. Lots of great stuff there. There's also some excellentinformation on medical images, compression, video and overlays.PartIII - DICOM Communications does a great job explaining thenetworking half of the DICOM standard. This is not something I'veneeded to know much about but was readable and definitely adds tomy understanding. I can see that being useful in variousapplication design decision in the coming years.Part IV - DICOMMedia and Security makes clear the media sections of the standardwere every bit as crazy as I thought them to be. The security stufftreats anonymization/de-identification well too.Part V - AdvancedTopics is a fairly wide ranging set of topics. The teleradiologychapter was useful although I felt a little thin..although there issome good advice in there I felt there was also some confusing,contradictory and vague information. The coverage of the work theauthor did with PACS etc. in a post-Katrina New Orleans is prettyeye opening. The DICOM software development chapter was a littlebit of a disappointment to me, although I acknowledge it is but onechapter rather than the entire focus of the book. Mostly deals withthings to consider if you were to write DICOM software at level ofbeing able to read/write DICOM files and communicate with DICOMcompliant AEs. That advice is useful...but I would imagine more ofus are utilizing libraries like dcm4che, ClearCanvas etc. andwriting applications on top of those -- there's not really anyadvice for folks in that situation.All in all, well worth theprice.One complaint: it's a HUGE shame that the Kindle edition isthe 1st edition of the book. You can only (seemingly) get thisupdated 2nd edition as hardback.1 of 1 people found the followingreview helpful. I got good help from the bookBy Bing ZhuI am new toDICOM. The author knows DICOM ins and outs, I learned from him. Thebook describes the basic and important parts of DICOM, and it isgood text book for the beginners. The book also includes the wayhow to develop DICOM apps, this is very good information for thedevelopers. The author was also responsible for DICOM systemrecovery after Katrina and he shared his experiences in the book.This is very important information for the hospital IT engineersand DICOM app developers. It is written in a manner such that managers,technicians, IT people, and general users can all gain usefulknowledge of DICOM. What is missing from other books is thepractical knowledge, the problems encountered and the solutions.This book is replete with practical anecdotes.This is a "must-own"book for anyone who must deal with DICOM PACS. The author does anexcellent job of presenting the basics, and then adding moreadvanced information in a logical progression. This book replacesall others, in my opinion.There are 18 chapters. Depending upon thebackground and interests of the reader, many chapters can beskimmed or skipped. This is also an excellent guide totroubleshooting a DICOM system.I highly recommend this book.
