GENERAL FILM REVIEW (Trailer)AUDIO

mhParental Warning! Many uses of the “S” word - especially in the 1st 15 minutes. Other profanities throughout. Themes of domestic abuse and physical altercations throughout. Some sexual innuendo. Drinking. Smoking. You know, all the things that happen in the lives of real people each and every day.

What a film! Exceptional storytelling by writer/director Jeff Nichols. Fantastic acting by FCC’s very own Matthew McConaughey (Interstellar, FCC 71), as the eponymous, mysterious character; Tye Sheridan, as 14 year-old Ellis - who is “coming of age” on the Mississippi River and struggling with the vicissitudes of love - between his parents, his “girlfriend, May Pearl, and Mud and Juniper; FCC’s very own Ray “Steal every scene he’s in" McKinnon (O Brother, Where Art Thou?, FCC 125); Sam Shepard, as “Assassin” Tom; FCC’s very own Michael Shannon (Man of Steel, FCC 95), as Uncle Galen; and more.

Mud is jealous *for* the ones he loves.

SFX #1:

God is jealous *for* the one He loves.
Ezekiel 37
I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

Jeremiah 32
They shall be my people, and I will be their God

Romans 11

SFX #1: 00:00 - 00:38
Sorry, boys, but I'm gonna have to go back on our deal for the boat. I don't feel good about it, but I don't see any other way out of what I'm into. | So you know about the state troopers? | State troopers? | The one's apreadin' your picture all over the place and stoppin' cars on 165 searchin' for your ass. | Well, I don't know about that, but it don't surprise me. I got a lot of folks lookin' for me. | Why? | I shot a man - killed him. I'm sorry I didn't tell you boys sooner, but I's hoping I'd be long gone before anything came of it. Didn't want y'all involved.

SFX #2: 00:43 - 01:18
Look, y'all been real good to me. You're the only friends I got out here, and if troopers got 165 blocked, that means they got other roads blocked, too, so I ain't gonna get nowhere in a car. I wanna see if we can get this boat down - see if we can get it in the water. See, with a boat like this, I can make it to the Gulf in two days, and from there, I can get anywhere. I need a boat at least this big to make it on the open water. It's got no title, no owner, nobody lookin' for it. It's my best shot.

SFX #3: 01:20 - 01:26
Who'd you kill? | Oh, just a bad piece of business. Y'all don't need to hear about it. | I need to hear about it.

SFX #4: 01:42 - 02:29
Juniper, she...she made a mistake. She hooked up with a guy who was no good - his name's Hutchins...his family owns a chain of restaurants down in Texas. | Where were you? | I's around, but me and Juniper were on the outs. She met him, and he sold her on a pack of lies. He got her pregnant, and that's when he started showing who he really was. He dropped her down a flight of stairs after whooping her half to death. She lost the baby, and he made it so that doctors say she can't have children no more.

SFX #5: 02:30 - 02:51
There are things you can get away with in this world, and there are things that you can't. I tracked him down - found him in a little motel outside of San Antonio...he's there...with another woman. That's where it happened.

mhThis movie is about love. Not "boy gets girl.” Rather, every boy loses his girl. Ellis struggles with love when he is told that his daddy and mama will most likely be separating and divorcing. How can this be? You love each other. This is not how love is supposed to behave; how it is to act. This is not what love does. Ellis knows this in his heart of hearts. Once Ellis discovers that Mud is waiting on the island for his own true love, Juniper, he knows that he must help in any way possible. It is for love. He must see true love win. He will risk everything to make it so. The problems between his parents must be negated, or love will be lost. Possibly forever.

At the same time, Ellis is pursuing his own crush. May Pearl is the older girl that he has eyes for, and after a show of chivalry she invites him on a date in the parking lot of the local Piggly-Wiggly where Ellis pledges his love and asks her to be his girlfriend. She answers with a kiss - which, in his heart, is an emphatic affirmative. But after that night she will not return his calls, and his 14 year-old heart cannot understand why. A chance meeting finds May Pearl (the girl with two first names!) in a car with another young man. Ellis again states his love and asks why she hasn’t returned his calls. Her answer enforces his suspicions that love does not exist. "My dad says you can't count on women loving you. You can't trust them,” he tells Mud.

Proof for this statements comes when Ellis finds Juniper in a bar with a man other than Mud. He was kissing her neck and she was not refusing. When Ellis tells Mud what he saw he expected him to go and rescue his love. But Mud doesn’t. Instead he sends Ellis with a note telling Juniper that it is, indeed, over; he will no longer pursue her. After reading the note she tells Ellis to let Mud know that she understands. This is too much for Ellis. Love is dead - if it ever really existed.

But in the world of the play love does exist. And it is patient, kind, and selfless; it is not provoked; it does not take into account a wrong suffered (1 Cor. 13:4ff). For, after striking and berating Mud for a list of wrongs and shortcomings, Mud does not strike back, or even defend himself against the attack. And when Ellis falls in the stream of deadly snakes - suffering a leathal bite - Mud, without even a hint of hesitation, scoops the boy up and leaves the safety of the island to rush him to the emergency clinic - thus saving his life.

Love does exist. Love wins!
Love is: 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, 13

Aside: Husbands love your wives as Christ loved the church

Luke 6:31-35 NASB
Treat others the same way you want them to treat you. If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. If you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners in order to receive back the same amount. But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men.
01:44:15 You said you loved her and you lied. You gave up on her and she gave up on you - just like everybody else.

01:55:30 My dad say you can't count on women loving you. You can't trust them. That ain't true. You're a good man, Ellis. Yore a good man, too. No, I ain't.

PS Philip - Comment on HUGO: Purpose and Kindness | FCC 149 Hey guys, great job on a great movie! One thing I get from HUGO is how knowing our Heavenly Father and having relationship with Him is vital to identifying our purpose in life. Hugo knew his Dad, emulated him, and worked out his purpose- to fix broken things, even people in as much as he was a part of Papa Georges' healing. We're all broken and in need of fixing, and without God we'll never be made truly whole.

A quick aside, I had an amazing experience watching THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS recently, which stars Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, and Rachel Weisz. Havi ng heard dozens of episodes of FCC helped me identify and contemplate some serious Christian themes in that film. It's a little known movie, but I highly recommend it to listeners of the show. Here's a link to my review where I sell it more: https://boxd.it/jICOx

Love the show guys! #quuuuuuiiiiiiiiiiccccchhhheeeeee
