I wonder if they're aware of that.	「会うは別れの始め」をfirst meeting someone is the first step toward goodbyeで文字通りに説明しています。enraptured「うっとりしている」。
5	2	青菜に塩	あおなにしお	彼、今日、精彩がないね。青菜に塩だね。	He seems really depressed and lifeless. today. I wonder what took the wind out of his sails. He seems lifeless and depressed today. It's like he just gave up on life.	「青菜に塩」とは「しおれている様子」のことですから、depressed and lifeless英訳全体でこの意味を表していることになります。
6	3	青は藍より出でて藍より青し	あおはあいよりいでてあいよりあおし	親父も立派な経営者だったけど、息子の活躍もすごいね。まさに青は藍より出でて藍より青しだね。	His father was a good businessman, but he's not bad at all. It's a typical case of the student outdoing his teacher. He knew this business pretty well, but his son is no slacker. It's a perfect case of the son being even better than the father.	「青は藍より出でて藍より青し（先生より生徒の方が優れている）」をstudent、outdo「勝る」、teacherを使って文字通りに表現しています
7	4	赤子の手を捻る	あかごのてをねじる	彼をやり込めるくらい、赤子の手を捻るより簡単だよ。	Cornering him in an argument is easy -- like taking candy from a baby. He's almost too easy to corner in an argument. It's like fishing in a bucket.	take candy from a babyとは「赤ちゃんから飴を取る」ということです。それくらいにたやすいことだと言っているのです。日本語にかなり近い言い回しですね。fish in a bucket「バケツの中にいる魚を釣る」。
8	5	秋風が立つ	あきかぜがたつ	うまくいっていたあのふたりも、とうとう秋風が立ち始めたね。	Those two used to get along so well together, but even with them, you can sense a chill coming on. You can feel a chill even with those two, who used to get along so well together.	「秋風が立つ（相手が嫌になる）」をfeel a chill「よそよそしさ（冷淡さ）を感じる」で表現しています。
9	6	秋の日は釣瓶落とし	あきのひはつるべおとし	もう辺りが暗くなってきた。秋の日は釣瓶落としだね。	** It's getting dark early around here. The sun seems to drop like a rock when autumn rolls around.	drop like a rockは「（岩のように）素早く沈む」、roll aroundは「やって来る」の意味。
10	7	悪事千里を行く	あくじせんりをゆく	都合の悪いこと、そうそう隠しとおせるもんじゃないよ。悪事千里を行く、っていうだろう。	** You can't hide the fact that you're having a hard time. Bad news travels fast, you know.	Bad news travels fast.は「悪い知らせはすぐに伝わる」という意味です。
11	8	悪銭身につかず	あくせんみにつかず	悪銭身につかず、というじゃない。結局は地道に稼ぐしかないと思うよ。	Ill-gotten gains are short-lived. The only way to make real money is to earn every penny. A fast buck doesn't stay with you. The best way to make money is to earn it day in and day out. ** A fast buck doesn't stick around long. You have to make money the old-fashioned way -- earn it.	Ill-gotten gains are short-lived.とは「不正な手段で得た金（利益）ははかないものである（すぐになくなる）」の意味。a fast buck「あぶく銭」。Easy come, easy go.でも「悪銭身につかず」の意味になります。
12	9	揚げ足を取る	あげあしをとる	人の揚げ足を取るばかりじゃなく、もっと建設的な意見を言ってくれないかな。	All you ever do is nitpick. I wish you could say something more constructive. Can't you say something constructive for a change? All you do is nitpick.	nitpick「あら探しをする、重箱の隅をつつく」。
13	10	朝寝坊の宵っ張り	あさねぼうのよいっぱり	朝寝坊の宵っ張りか身上の俺としては、飲み会は朝まて付き合うよ	My philosophy is that he who sleeps in every morning naturally stays up late. So if you want to drink with me, we go until dawn. My philosophy is that if you sleep late in the morning, you've got a duty/right to stay up late. So if we drink, we drink all night.** My belief is that he who sleeps late in the morning is naturally supposed to stay up late at night. So if you want to drink with me, we're going to drink all night.	「朝寝坊の宵っ張り」を文字通りに英訳すると"he who sleeps in every morning naturally stays up late"になります。
14	11	朝飯前	あさめしまえ	コンピュータのトラブル処理なんて、彼にとっては朝飯前だよ。	** Taking care of computer problems is a piece of cake for him.	「朝飯前」は a piece of cake（とても簡単なこと）で表現できます。
15	12	足が重い	あしがおもい	休日なのに出勤なんて足が重くなるよ。	** I can't help dragging my feet when I have to go to work on a holiday.	drag one's feet で「ぐずぐず歩く、足を引きずって歩く」の意味。
16	13	明日は明日の風が吹く	あしたはあしたのかぜがふく	失敗したからってそんなにクヨクヨするな。明日は明日の風が吹くさ。	** Just because you messed up is no reason to be so down in the dumps. Tomorrow is a new day.	Tomorrow is a new day. は Tomorrow will always be another day. とも言えます。
17	14	足を洗う	あしをあらう	あんな汚い商売からは足を洗ったよ。	** I've washed my hands of that kind of scam.	「足を洗う」は英語では wash one's hands（手を洗う）と言います。scam は「ペテン、信用詐欺」の意。
18	15	味をしめる	あじをしめる	彼は一度キセルが成功したことに味をしめて、常習犯になった。	** He succeeded once in cheating on his train fare, and acquired a taste for the crime, which became a regular habit.	acquire a taste for ... で「…の味を覚える」の意味。ここでは「キセル」を cheating on his train（電車代をごまかすこと）で表現しています。
19	16	当たって砕けよ	あたってくだけよ	当たって砕けよが俺の持ち味だからね。	My strong point is my philosophy -- nothing ventured, nothing gained. I'm proud of my philosophy. I believe in going for broke. ** My strength is in my philosophy -- you can't lose anything by trying.	Nothing ventured, nothing gained.は「思い切ってやってみなければ、何も得られない」の意。go for broke「とことんやってみる」。
20	17	頭の上の蝿を追え	あたまのうえのはえをおえ	人のお節介などしないで、自分の頭の上の蝿を追ったらどうなんだね。	Why don't you mind your own business? What do you gain by sticking your nose into other people's affairs? I'd say you should worry about your own problems. You don't gain anything by sticking your nose in other people's business.	stick one's nose into other people's affairsで「他人事に鼻をを突っ込む」の意。
21	18	中らずといえども遠からず	あたらずといえどもとおからず	君の指摘、中らずといえども遠からずだね。	Your point may be a little off target, but it certainly is close. Your point isn't right on the mark, but it's close enough.	a little off target「的が少し外れている」とclose「近い」を組み合わせて表現しています。
22	19	後の祭り	あとのまつり	いまさら嘆いても、それこそ、後の祭だよ。	You can regret it all you want, but it won't do you any good now. Regretting it is normal, but it won't bring her back.	「後の祭り」はIt's too late.「手遅れ」でもいいのですが、ここではit won't do you any good now.「今となっては（後悔しても）何のためにもならない」で表現しています。二番目の英文のit won't bring her back.「彼女は戻って来ないよ（たとえて言っている）」の意味。
23	20	後は野となれ山となれ	あとはのとなれやまとなれ	後先考えず、とりあえずやってみるか。後は野となれ山となれ、だよ。	Let's just try it. Who cares what happens afterward? There's no sense thinking too much about that. Instead of thinking so much about the future, why don't we just give it a try? Let the cards/chips fall where they may.	Who cares what happens afterward?で「後のことは誰も気にしない」の意味。

I want to crawl into a hole and disappear. ** What a disgrace. I wish I could make myself invisible.	crawl into a holeで「穴に入る」の意。disappear「消える」、invisible「目に見えない」。
25	22	あの手この手	あのてこのて	顧客にあの手この手で商品を売り込んでみたが、まったく興味を示さなかった。	** I tried every trick in the book to sell this customer on the product, but he/she didn't show any interest at all.	try every trick（あらゆる策を試す）で「あの手この手」を表現しています。
26	23	あばたもえくぼ	あばたもえくぼ	彼はあんなわがままな人とよく結婚したね。まあ、あばたもえくぼってやつだね。	** How could he marry somebody so self-centered? Oh, well. To each, his own.	To each, his own.で「人それぞれだから」の意味。 Love is blind.「恋は盲目」でも「あばたもえくぼ」の意味になります。
27	24	危ない橋を渡る	あぶないはしをわたる	彼の会社、最近結構危ない橋を渡っているって、もっぱらの噂だよ。	That company is dangling by a thread. That's the rumor I hear. There are lots of rumors now about his company being on the thin edge between survival and collapse. ** This company is walking a tightrope -- that's the rumor, anyway.	dangle by a threadで「とても危ない」の意。be on the thin edge between survival and collapse「生きるか死ぬか（倒産するか）の瀬戸際にある」、walk a tightrope「綱渡りをする（危ない状況にある）」。
28	25	虻蜂取らず	あぶはちとらず	そんなに欲をかいていると、虻蜂取らずになっちゃうよ。	Don't be so greedy or you'll wind up with nothing. Trying for both, you're going to end up with nothing. ** Make up your mind on which one you want or you'll end up with nothing.	「虻蜂取らず」とは「欲をかくと何も手に入らない」ということですから、このニュアンスはwind/end up with nothing「結局何も残らない」で表現できます。greedy「欲張る」。
29	26	油を売る	あぶらをうる	プラプラ油を売っていないで、とっとと仕事にもどったらどうなのさ。	As long as we're all just hanging around chatting, may I make a suggestion? Get back to work! Quit wasting time and get back to work!	hang around and chat awayで「ぶらぶらしながら無駄話をする」の意。waste time「時間を無駄にする」。
30	27	雨降って地固まる	あめふってじかたまる	いろいろトラブルもあったけど、雨降って地固まるってことになってほしいね。	We've been through a rough patch, but I hope it will have made us stronger. It's been rough going, but I hope we'll be the stronger for it.	「地固まる」とはmake ... stronger「... をより強くする」ということですね。be through a rough patch「大変な思いをする」。
31	28	嵐の前の静けさ	あらしのまえのしずけさ	二人の沈黙はなんなんだ。これが嵐の前の静けさってやつか。	Those two are so quiet it's unsettling. Could this be the quiet before the storm? This must be the calm before the storm. Those two are never this quiet. ** Why are those two so quiet? Maybe it's the quiet before the storm.	The quiet/calm before the storm.が「嵐の前の静けさ」にあたる言い回しです。
32	29	合わせる顔がない	あわせるかおがない	あんな大失敗をしてしまって上司に合わせる顔がない。	** I can't face my senior coworkers after making such a huge mess of things.	この場合のfaceは動詞で「顔を向ける、直面する」の意味。
33	30	案ずるより産むが易し	あんずるよりうむがやすし	いつまでも思い悩まないで、とりあえず動いてみたら。案ずるより産むが易しだよ。	I'd stop worrying about it and take some action. The anxiety that comes from doing nothing is worse than any danger you might face. You should stop worrying about it and get to work. Fear is often worse than the danger itself.	「案ずるより産むが易し」にはFear is often worse than the danger itself. という言い方があります。The anxiety that comes from doing nothing ... 「何もしないことから来る不安の方が、実際に直面する危険の方よりもずっとひどい」でも同じようなことが言えますね。
34	31	安堵の表情	あんどのひょうじょう	彼女は試合に勝って安堵の表情を浮かべた。	** When she won the match, a look of blessed relief came over her face.	a look of blessed reliefは「喜びでホッとした表情」の意味。
35	32	言うは易く行うは難し	いうはやすくおこなうはかたし	彼、能書きばかり立派だけど、言うは易く行うは難し、ってこと分かってんのかなあ。	** His boosterism / upbeat description makes it sound wonderful, but I wonder if he understands how hard it's going to be to actually carry out.	Easier said than done.という言い方もありますが、ここではhow hard it's going to be to actually carry out「実際にやることがどれだけ体験か」で表現しています。boosterism「自己宣伝、激賞」、upbeat description「楽天的な説明」。
36	33	息を吹き返す	いきをふきかえす	わが社は倒産寸前だったが、このヒット商品のおかげで息を吹き返した。	** Our company was on the brink of going under, but this new hit product breathed new life into us.	「息を吹き返す」を breathe new life into ...（…に新しい息吹を吹き込む）で表現しています。
37	34	石の上にも三年	いしのうえにもさんねん	石の上にも三年、というじゃない。もう少し辛抱しなさいよ。	Be patient and persistent. These things take time. Be patient. It takes time to accomplish something worthwhile.	「石の上にも三年」とは「辛抱すればうまくいく」という意味ですから、このことわざのポイントはpatient「辛抱する」とpersistent「根気強い」で言い表せます。take time「時間がかかる」、accomplish「成し遂げる」。
38	35	石橋をたたいて渡る	いしばしをたたいてわたる	彼は何事にも慎重で、まさに石橋をたたいて渡るタイプだ。	** He does everything so cautiously it's like he's walking on eggshells all the time.	walk on eggshellsで「細心の注意を払う」という意味になります。
39	36	医者の不養生	いしゃのふようじょう	あの先生タバコで肺がんになったんだって。医者の不養生、そのものだね。	For him, a doctor, to get lung cancer from smoking -- it's a typical case of 'Do as I say, not as I do.' He's a doctor. So for him to get lung cancer from smoking is a typical case of the doctor disobeying doctor's orders.	Do I say, not do as I do.は「私の言う通りにしなさい。私のやっていることをしてはいけない」の意味。disobey doctor's orders「医者の指示に従わない」
40	37	いずれ菖蒲か杜若	いずれあやめかかきつばた	あの美人姉妹、いずれ菖蒲か杜若、二人とも優劣つけがたいね。	They're a gorgeous pair of sisters. I'd hate to have to decide between them. It would be like trying to decide whether lilies or roses are more beautiful. Both of those two sisters are beautiful. They're like apples and oranges -- who can say which is better?	「菖蒲か杜若」をlilies「ユリ」とroses「バラ」を使って表現してみました。applesとorangesで表現できないこともありません。でも、やはり、美しさを言っているのですから、花を使った方がいいでしょうね。
41	38	急がば廻れ	いそがばまわれ	面倒なようでも、基本に立ち返って検討し直したらどうだろう。急がば廻れ、というじゃない。	** It may seem like a hassle, but I think you ought to go back to the basics and start over. Haste makes waste, they say.	Haste makes waste.で「あわてると無駄になる」の意味。Make haste slowly.という言い方もあります。
42	39	痛くもない腹を探られる	いたくもないはらをさぐられる	痛くもない腹を探られるのはやりきれないね。	** I can't believe I'm under suspicion. I haven't done a thing.	can't believe I'm under suspicionで「嫌疑をかけられるなんて信じられない」の意味になります。この後にI haven't done a thing.「何もしていないのに」を付け足しています。
43	40	一日の長	いちじつのちょう	年の功というのか、彼の意見はさすがに一日の長があるね。	Maybe it's his age, but his opinions seem a little more grounded in experience than everyone else's. It may be because of his age, but he seems to have opinions that come more from experience than others'.	a little more grounded in experience than ... で「他の人に比べより経験に基づいている」の意味。
44	41	一難去ってまた一難	いちなんさってまたいちなん	一難去ってまた一難、またまた難題が社長からトップダウンで降りてきたよ。	** No sooner had we finished working on one tough problem than the president sent us yet another, straight from the top.	「一難去ってまた一難」はOne tough problem after another.とも言えますが、ここではNo sooner ... than「... するやいなや」を使って表現しています。
45	42	一姫二太郎	いちひめにたろう	第二子は男の子だって。これでめでたく一姫二太郎ってわけだね。	Your second child is a boy? Lucky you! things are going according to the saying -- "Have a girl first, and a boy next." So, your second child is a boy? That's lucky -- at least according to the saying. You know, "First a girl, then a boy."	日本語をそのまま英語にすると"Have a girl first, and a boy next."となります。
46	43	一を聞いて十を知る	いちをきいてじゅうをしる	一を聞いて十を知る、とまではいかないまでももうちょっと物分りがよくなってほしいよ。	A really perceptive person can figure out a whole situation with just a few clues. That's the kind of person I want you to become. I want you to get a little more clued in. I mean, a really perceptive person can learn ten times as much about a situation as he actually hears.	can figure out a whole situation with just a few cluesで「少しの手がかりで、全体の状況が理解できる」の意味。a perceptive person「見通しのきく人」。
47	44	一寸先は闇	いっすんさきはやみ	彼あんなに元気だったのに。突然亡くなるなんて。一寸先は闇だね。	He was so healthy up to the minute of his sudden death. You really never know what might happen next. You never know when your number will come up. He was so healthy, and he passed away/on so suddenly.	You really never know ... とは「次に何が起こるか本当に分からない」の意味です。when your number will come up「いつ死ぬことになるか」。
48	45	一旦緩急あれば	いったん、かんきゅうあれば	いつもお世話になっていますから、一旦緩急あれば、すぐさま馳せ参じます。	You're always there for me, so if you're ever in dire straits, just let me know and I'll come running (to help). If you're ever in a pinch, all you have to do is let me know and I'll come running. It's the least I can do.	be in dire straits、be in a pinchで「窮境にある」の意味。
49	46	一頭地を抜く	いっとうちをぬく	彼はうちの社員の中でも一頭地を抜く存在として一目置かれている。	Among our employees, he's recognized as a towering figure. He's recognized as a towering figure even among our employees.	「一頭地を抜く存在」とはa towering figure「高くそびえ立つような人物（他より抜きんでている）」ということですね。
50	47	一杯くわせる	いっぱいくわせる	この中古カメラ、すぐに動かなくなったよ。店員に一杯くわされた。	** This used camera stopped working almost immediately. I got taken for a ride by the store clerk.	get taken for a ride（かつがれる、口車に乗せられる）で「一杯くわされる」を表現しています。
51	48	一敗地に塗れる	いっぱいちにまみれる	残念ながら、サッカーの試合、一敗地に塗れてしまったよ。	It's too bad, but we got pummeled at the soccer match. I wish it weren't so, but that soccer match was a crushing defeat.	「一敗地に塗れる」とは「２度と立ち上がれないほどにやられる」という意味ですから、get pummeled「こてんぱんにやられる」、a crushing defeat「惨敗」を使えばその意味が表せるでしょう。
52	49	命あっての物種	いのちあってのものだね	事故で車は全損って嘆いているけどさ、怪我がなくてなにより、命あっての物種だよ	I know you're complaining about your car being totaled, but it's just a good thing you weren't injured. You should be thankful to be alive. I hear you complaining about how your car was totaled in an accident. But the main thing is that you were unhurt. You’re lucky to be alive.	You should be thankful to be alive.で「生きていることに感謝するべき」の意。be totaled「全損になる、完全に壊れる」。
53	50	井の中の蛙大海を知らず	いのなかのかわず　たいかいをしらず	世間知らずにもほとがある。井の中の蛙大海を知らず、ということかね。	I can't believe you're so clueless. You're like a babe in the woods. How can you be so unaware of what it's like out there? You're like a frog at the bottom of a well, talking about the ocean.	a babe in the woodsで「世間知らず」の意味になります。clueless「何も分かっていない」、well「井戸」
54	51	嫌よ嫌よも好きのうち	いやよいやよもすきのうち	あの２人、いつもけんかばかりしてるけど本当に仲悪いのかな？嫌よ嫌よも好きのうちってこともあるしさ。	** Those two are always fighting, but I wonder whether their relationship is actually that bad. Sometimes people say they hate what they really love.	they hate what they really love（本当に好きな物を嫌う）を使って「嫌よ嫌よも好きのうち」にニュアンスを出しています。
55	52	入るを量りて出るを為す	いるをはかりて（いずる）をなす	もっと経費を抑えろよ。入るを量りて出るを為す、ということを知らんのかね。	We have to cut business expenses here. Haven't you ever heard of looking at how much you're getting before you start spending? You need to cut down on expenses. Haven't you heard of spending according to your income?	「入るを量りて出るを為す」とはlook at how much you're getting before you start spending「お金を使う前に、どれだけ収入があるのかを見る」ということですね。income「収入」。

58	55	烏合の衆	うごうのしゅう	連中、頭数だけは揃えたようだけど、所詮は烏合の衆。こちらは僕一人で論破してみせるよ。	** This is a big bunch, but all they are is a noisy mob. I'll talk them down on my own.	a noisy mobとは「ただうるさいだけの群衆」ということです。bunch「群」、talk down「理詰めで説き伏せる」。

63	60	腕によりをかける	うでによりをかける	腕によりをかけて作った自慢の料理よ。さあ召し上がれ。	** I put all my skills to work in making this meal, so please enjoy it.	put all one's skills to work で「自分の持つ技術をすべて使う」の意味。
64	61	打てば響く	うてばひびく	彼はいいね。打てば響くようにすぐ動いてくれるよ	He's a good kid -- very quick on the uptake, and he does whatever needs to be done. He's a good kid -- very responsive and intelligent, and he gets things done quick/quickly.	「打てば響く」とはbe very quick on the uptake「物わかりが早い」、responsive「反応がいい、敏感な」ということですね。
65	62	うどの大木	うどのたいぼく	奴はうどの大木なんかじゃないよ。本当に頭の切れる奴だ。	** He's not just a big oaf. He's sharp as a razor.	oafとは「でくの坊、のろま」のことです。
66	63	鰻上り	うなぎのぼり	営業成績はまさに鰻上り、というところかね。	Our sales performance is just skyrocketing. Our sales performance is really spiraling up.	skyrocketは「急騰する」、spiral upは「どんどん（螺旋状に）上がる」の意味。
67	64	馬の耳に念仏	うまのみみにねんぶつ	彼に忠告したところで、馬の耳に念だよ。	Giving advice to him is like talking to a brick wall. Giving advice to him is about as useful as praying into a donkey's ear.	a brick wallとは「煉瓦の壁」という意味。文字通りに英訳すると第２文のようになります。これでも意味は通じるはずです。
