5.c. Explanation of the choice of Programme Learning Outcomes
Please explain your rationale for choosing these PLOs in a statement that can be used for students (such as in a student handbook). Please include brief reference to:
81
i) ... in what way will these PLOs result in an ambitious, challenging programme which stretches the students?
82
The learning outcomes for this programme have been designed to give you the chance to acquire an in-depth understanding of management and business finance. The combination of finance with business strategy is particularly challenging as well as interesting since you will need to cope with both quantitative and non-quantitative modules over the period of your learning. In particular, the programme encourages you to think about general business functions, strategy formulation, communication, and data gathering and analysis. Moroever, you will undertake an independent dissertation on a topic of your choice, which may be relevant to your career interest. In this way, the programme will not only be intellectually-stimulating, but will challenge you to undertake a career-advancing project.
83
ii) ... in what way will these PLOs produce a programme which is distinctive and advantageous to the student?
84
The combination of finance with business strategy makes this programme distinctive and advantegous. Specifically, the programme offers you knowledge about a number of areas in business and general management as well as an opportunity for you to become acquainted with financial markets and aspects of financial strategy.
85
iii) ... how the design of the programme enables students from diverse entry routes to transition successfully into the programme? For example, how does the organisation of the programme ensure solid foundations in disciplinary knowledge and understanding of conventions, language skills, mathematics and statistics skills, writing skills, lab skills, academic integrity
86
To enable you to transition successfully onto the programme, pre-arrival and pre-sessional materials will be made available to you. Among other things, these materials will highlight the need for you to make a career plan as the recuitment cycle usually starts in the Autumn term, and sign-post you to the York Futures Online Strength Tests. It is also proposed to offer a week of intensive teaching that brings all of you (students) onto the same platform. Additonally, supports regarding proficiecy in English Language is provided by the English Support Centre in the University. Also, those of you who may not be particularly strong in quantitative subjects may find the services offered by the Maths Skills Centre useful in helping you cope on the programme.
87
iv) ... how the programme is designed to enable students to progress successfully - in a limited time frame - through to the end of the award? For example, the development of higher level research skills; enabling students to complete an independent study module; developing competence and confidence in practical skills/ professional skills. See QAA masters characteristics doument http://www.qaa.ac.uk/en/Publications/Documents/Masters-Degree-Characteristics-15.pdf
88
During the first term, we propose a mix of assignments to make your workloads manageable and for you to smoothly settle onto the programme.
The second term is predominantly assessed through written assignments that are designed to test both your understanding of key concepts and your ability to apply these ideas to complex, real-life business and management scenarios. As you then move on through the programme, you will increasingly be asked to devise your own research problems and identify your own topics and questions. You will also be expected to demonstrate the capacity to apply and utilise relevant research techniques to tackle these questions.
Finally, the programme will culminate with the independent research dissertation, in which you will be expected to utilise and apply the skills and knowledge that you have learnt during your studies. Alongside the research skills developed in the course of completing the various modular assessments for this programme, you will also receive bespoke training in research methods directly relevant to business and finance. This training will include not only the practicalities of using different quantitative and qualitative research methods, but also the theories and assumptions underpinning these approaches. Teaching in this area will include both practical step-by-step workshops in which you will get to study the research methods adopted by other academics. When it comes to writing your own independent research dissertations, you will also be supported by their own personal supervisor who will offer guidance and support on your proposed research project. These personal supervisors and your module leaders can act as your referees in the recruitment process and articulate the skills you have acquired to potential employers.
89
v) ... how this programme (as outlined in these PLOs) will develop students’ digital literacy skills and how technology-enhanced learning will be used to support active student learning through peer/tutor interaction, collaboration and formative (self) assessment opportunities (reference could be made to such as blogging, flipped classroooms, response 'clickers' in lectures, simulations, etc).
90
This programme gives you the opportunity to develop your digital literacy skills in a variety of ways. During the course of your studies, you will learn how to obtain data from different databases such as DataStream, CRSP/Compustat, yahoo fnance, etc. You will create your own powerpoint presentations, use a variety of statistical software, and explore different ways of searching for information on the internet. These will be taught in class and integrated in the teaching. There will be guidance on developing higher level skills through workshops offered elsewhere in the University (Library / IT). Like all other programmes, the VLE is also used extensively as a means of transmitting information to, and communicating with, you.
91
vi) ... how this programme (as outlined in these PLOs) will support and enhance the students’ employability (for example, opportunities for students to apply their learning in a real world setting)?
The programme's employablity objectives should be informed by the University's Employability Strategy:
92
http://www.york.ac.uk/about/departments/support-and-admin/careers/staff/
93
At the heart of this programme is a strong focus on enhancing your employability. From the start to the finish, the programme has been designed to ensure that you develop skills in business analysis, strategy formulation, information processing and cummunication, gatherring data, and presentation of relevant infromation. Undoubtedly, all these skills are required by employers. In addition, there is a strong emphasis on encouraging you to address problems that are of interest to you. As a result, the programme not only offers you the chance to enhance your specialist knowledge in managment, but it also offers you the chance to develop the sorts of practical skills that you will need to succeed in today's rapidly evolving workplace. Furthermore, the Placement Office of the School and the Career Centre of the University are all available to offer support to you in your job search. Finally, the School frequently organises Master Classes and Career Fairs that brings employers to campus to interact with students and let them know the demands of the world of work.
94
vii) Consultation with Careers
The progamme proposal should be discussed with Careers (tom.banham@york.ac.uk, ext. 2686)
Please provide details of Careers' comments and your response.
95
Careers were consulted on the required skills employers look for when recruiting postgraduate students. The ability to identify a clear problem and independently conduct a research about it, using appropriate methods and tools was highlighted, and this has influenced the design of the programme by embedding qualitative and quantitative research methods and dissertation into the programme. In addition, you will be given support through a personal dissertation supervisor to ensure that you are able to acquire this important skill.
96
viii) ... how learning and teaching on the programme are informed and led by research in the department/ Centre/ University?
97
Dissertations that are written by the you are choosen from the topics of interest to academics within the group. In other words, the academics who are experts in particular areas will supervise the students. There is clear knowledge transfer and research-led teaching and learning in this program.
98
5.d. Progression
For masters programmes where students do not incrementally 'progress' on the completion of a discrete Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma, please summarise students’ progressive development towards the achievement of the PLOs, in terms of the characteristics that you expect students to demonstrate at the end of the set of modules or part thereof. This summary may be particularly helpful to students and the programme team where there is a high proportion of option modules and in circumstances where students registered on a higher award will exit early with a lower one.

Note: it is not expected that a position statement is written for each masters PLO, but this can be done if preferred.
99
On completion of modules sufficient to obtain a Postgraduate Certificate students will be able to:
If the PG Cert is an exit award only please provide information about how students will have progressed towards the diploma/masters PLOs. Please include detail of the module diet that students will have to have completed to gain this qualification as an exit award.
100
You must accumulate 60 credits across any of the taught modules of the programme in order to achieve a PG Cert. It is expected that by that time you will have progressed towards meeting PLOs 2,3 and 6.
