General Notes
71
2.1 million Americans are over 65 and living in nursing homes or assisted living facilities representing:
0.62%
of the U.S. population.
72
There are five different categories of long-term care providers, of which nursing homes is one subtype.
73
Some states report COVID-19 deaths for nursing homes specifically; others disclose some combination of long-term care deaths (usually including assisted living facilities).
74
For more information, read https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/series/sr_03/sr03_43-508.pdf
75
Nursing homes a.k.a. skilled nursing facilities or SNFs (24 residents per 1000 aged 65 or over) include 24-hour supervision, nursing care, 3 meals a day, and assistance with activities of daily living.
76
Nursing home residents are usually those recently discharged from a hospital, or those with chronic physical, medical, or mental conditions requiring long-term, 24-hour supervision.
77
Assisted living facilities a.k.a. residential care communities or personal care homes (15/1000 ≥65) offer meals and assistance with activities of daily living, but do not have full-time medical care on-site.
78
Adult day service centers (4/1000 ≥65) are designed as a day-only alternative to full-fledged nursing homes, and are usually open only during normal business hours.
79
Home health agencies (76/1000 ≥65), another alternative to nursing homes or SNFs, offer health care services in a patient's home.
80
Hospices (28/1000 ≥65) are residential facilities designed for people with terminal illnesses (e.g. those with 6 months or less to live).
