Steeple - blunt
From Metropolitan Jewelry, page 19 - Maria Maddalena Baroncelli, wife of Tommaso Portinari. Member of the large Florentine community in Bruges, the middle-aged Tomaso Portinari was partner and manager of the Bruges branch of the Medici bank when he married fourteen-year-old Maria Baroncelli....They married in 1470. About a year later he commissioned Memling to paint the devotional tryptic. Maria is the right panel. Seven years later (1478) ... in an alterpiece painted by Hugo van der Goes..her hennin is extravagantly decorated with pearls in the form of Ts and Ms. **We know from x-ray examination that Memling originally included this pearl embellishment in his painting as well, but his deliberate simplification of the henin creates a far more dramatic setting for the necklace***
