In 1879, it was the only grist mill in Orleans County equipped with the most up-to-date machinery. Mills rely on mechanical systems to alter the state of raw materials and significant amounts of energy, such as water power, to run the machinery. The Central Mill was supplied with water from a well near the canal.Business 2022 JunPhoto

Lansing, Capt. William
According to Veronica Klawitter of the John W. Cowper Construction Co. of Buffalo, 700 tons of new Medina sandstone were quarried from Hulberton last year to help in the reconstruction of the Connecticut St. Armory in Buffalo. The armory was heavily damaged in a 1983 fire, but fire and construction crews were able to save 750 tons of sandstone from the original building. However, according to Klawitter, the quarried stone had to be shipped out of the area because there are no skilled craftsmen left locally to handle the task. The 700 tons of stone had to be shipped to stone plants in Lee, Mass. and Smithfield, R.I. and then shipped back to Buffalo. Some of the stone was also finished at Niagara Stone near Buffalo.Public Building 2013 JanPhotoLink

The first quarry opened in the town of Murray was on farm of Samuel D. Copeland in 1853 by a Mr. Streeter, of Buffalo It was opened and worked to procure building stone for St. Paul's (Episcopal) Church on Delaware avenue in Buffalo. In 1865 Alfred J. St. Teresa RC ChurchBuffaloNY1970 Seneca St.1898Post, Albert A.2016St. Theresa's Church Complex is significant as a good local example of ecclesiastic architecture. The 5-building complex consists of a Medina Sandstone Gothic Revival church designed by Albert A. Post in 1895-1900, a Shingle Style rectory built ca. 1895 (1916 addition), a modest Gothic Revival school building built 1910 (1926 addition), a gymnasium building built in 1959 and a garage built ca. 1950. The Complex is also significant for its role as the first Roman Catholic parish established in South Buffalo. (Preservation Buffalo Phase II survey 2021)Church 2021 AugPhoto

St. Paul Catholic ChurchEriePA1617 Walnut St.19282019Stickle, G. WesleyDue to the economic conditions and the scarcity of the dollar, the exterior shell of the new church was finished with stones from the discarded curbing of the Erie streets. The city, at that time was in the process of remodeling the streets. The Italian workmen from the parish were hired to put their skills to the task of refashioning the huge blocks of stone and reshaping them into the expanding building. The results of their never ending desire stands today, the challenge and the ingenuity that confronted the talented stonecutters. Church 2019 JanPhotoLink
