Peace and Friendship Indigenous partnership several decades. Now in land back process. Have had black leadership advisory council.
Struggling to make ends meet
Our social business model has three prongs: 1) learning programs (our heart and soul) and dependent on grant funding for barrier reduced fees; 2) hosted gatherings with aligned organizations; 3) Airbnb (for overflow, extra space) and a couple of long term rentals for one staff member (grounds) and one former staff family. We had one profitable year during COVID. No year is more than about 50,000 in debt so we are not as bad as some. Don't carry debt on credit line etc. We are between breaking even & struggling to make ends meet. Factors that affect our financial situation: Multiple pandemics/reckoning- climate disasters (6 floods in 4 years) combined with extreme heat. Old buildings. Rising price of food and oil. We offer a living wage to full time staff including seasonal full time hospitality staff. Racial reckoning has affected capacities of racialized folks as well as fuelled conflict. COVID has definitely affected attendance, gathering, cancellations. We are in a powerful historical moment of land back so balancing income-generation with those processes which are intensely important and time consuming, political, can be a bit of a challenge.

Struggling to make ends meet
Aging of retreatants and groups from prior years limits their return retreats. Still recovering from business losses related to COVID-19 pandemic plus lingering negative perceptions of many toward large groups in common spaces. Wage & benefit increases primarily impacting shared service departments upon which we depend (housekeeping, maintenance, dietary, laundry). Limited resources for upgrading and furnishings and other amenities.
