What it means:Previous research on assessment of mindfulness by self-report suggests that it may include five component skills: observing, describing, acting with awareness, nonjudging of inner experience, and nonreactivity to inner experience. These elements of mindfulness can be measured with the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ).
14
Observing includes noticing or attending to internal and external experiences, such as sensations, cognitions, emotions, sights, sounds, and smells
15
Describing refers to labeling internal experiences with words.
16
Acting with awareness includes attending to one’s activities of the moment and can be contrasted with behaving mechanically while attention is focused elsewhere (often called automatic pilot).
17
Nonjudging of inner experience refers to taking a nonevaluative stance toward thoughts and feelings.
18
Nonreactivity to inner experience is the tendency to allow thoughts and feelings to come and go,
without getting caught up in or carried away by them
19
20
Why it MattersConsistent with predictions, most mindfulness facets were significantly related to meditation experience and to psychological symptoms and well-being. As expected, relationships between the observing facet and psychological adjustment varied with meditation experience. Regression and mediation analyses showed that several of the facets contributed independently to the prediction of well-being and significantly mediated the relationship between meditation experience and well-being
