HISTORY OF NEW CASTLE COUNTY CROSS COUNTRY

6
In 1953, a meet was held at Rockford Park for New Castle County teams (the precursor to the New Castle County meet). Six teams entered, with Bill Rhoades of Mount Pleasant H.S. being the champion along with his team. The next year the meet was opened up to all teams in the state of Delaware and that meet became the first State Championship. The New Castle County Cross-Country Championship began again in 1983 at Carpenter State Park (now White Creek State Park) and has continued (at various venues) to this day. In 1983, there were 9 girls' teams and 10 boys' teams that competed. The team winners were Salesianum on the boys' side and Padua for the girls. Dan Foran of Mount Pleasant and Shelly Swick of Glasgow were the first individual champions.
