Description :
9
This document lists all the World Records for the different 1 player modes of Super Smash Bros for the Nintendo 64.
10
All new world records needs to be recorded. Pausing is not allowed for Bonuses Individual levels, but it's allowed for 1 player mode speedrun.
11
Althought original N64 is preferred, emulator/wii vc can be accepted since they don't affect how the game behave. Since it's becoming harder / more expensive to get a physical copy of the game + a N64, I can understand why some people would go for emulation instead.
12
I would recommend for emulator players to be streaming so that we can see that everything behave has intended.
13
Phone Recording is sufficient as a proof even if a video capture device like gv-usb2 is preferred. So there shouldn't be any reasons not to provide footage of a run.
14
Obviously cheating / savestates / lowering frame rate / external modifications are not allowed.
15
For controller, anything tournament legal is allowed. Stick jumps are essentials for higher jumps / faster movements and old n64 controllers are simply not good enough to compete at the top level.
16
Get a steel stick / cube stick replacement / hori / tribute n64 for best results.

1999-2002
Early Days Japan
21
After the game came out, some japanese websites appeared to keep track of BTT (Break the Targets) and BTP (Board the Platforms) records.
22
On his own website, Sakurai added the best times from his testers / dev team.
[Here]
23
This sparked interest in the japanese community to try and beat those times.
24
Around 2001-2002, one website included videos which brought a lot of attention to how impressive those runs could be.
[Here]
25
Best times were shared by KabiK, Hikapie, Gontaro (Those 3 had the best total times / most world records overall). Other players held world record at some point in time like Prince with Falcon BTT 9.79, but most got lost through times.
26
27
Notable Milestones :
28
They were the first to achieve the sub 2:20 THS (Total High Score) for BTT and sub 4:30 THS for BTP

2003-2007Gamefaqs Era
36
A little later in America (2003-2007), most scores were being tracked on GameFaqs message boards. US version and Japanese version were already splits due to version differences which made it hard to compete on an even ground.
37
US version scores were the main focus of those GameFaqs thread but they were keeping track of the japanese scores and strategies. Almost no video exist from that era.
38
During this period, Isai was dominating and was so far ahead of everyone for both modes. He was creating a lot of new strategies and was excellent at maximizing strats. His technical skills and creativity really helped to push those scores.
39
Even using the slower version for BTT (US), he still had a faster total time than the best japanese players.
40
Isai got his hands on J version and got some world records like Ness BTT 16.40 and Link BTP 22.11. Although most people sticked to 1 version of the game, he at least gave a shot at the japanese version.
41
Websites like n64 highscores
[Here]
was also used to keep track of US scores but due to some cheating events, Isai decided to quit and remove all his scores from the site. All his WRs were gone from the site around 2005-2006.
42
Cyberscore has also been tracking records since 2005 and it's still alive. Not every top players are there but there's some good level of competition.
43
Near the end of this period, a legendary BTT player for SSBM tried to challenge Isai. His name: Marth1
44
Over the span of 1 year, Marth1 matched almost every score of Isai or beat them by 1-2 frames while Isai stopped playing.
45
To this day, Marth1's BTT THS is 0.04 lower than Isai's BTT THS, althought he was never able to replicate any of Isai's BTP feat.
46
47
Players that influenced / contributed during this period :
48
Isai, Marth1, Chuck, Sock, PDM, Moogles, MojoJojo, NeoAnubis, Antdgar (1 of the first Taser of this game), kabiK, Hikapie, Gontaro, other (US and J players)
49
50
Notable Milestones :
51
Isai was the first to achieve sub 2:17 THS for BTT and sub 4:28 THS for BTP, a feat only achieved 4 and 3 times respectively for the US version of the game.
52
Isai held the best THS for BTP for 14+ years (2003/04-2018)
53
54
Second barrier broken by the community :
55
BTT : Yoshi sub 15, Kirby sub 14
56
BTP : Ness sub 25, Pikachu sub 17
57
BTT THS combined sub 2:16 and BTP THS combined sub 4:26

2007-2011Youtube Era
60
A japanese runner named NT (tonkatsu610 on Youtube), decided to grind bonuses while recording himself playing. Unlike other players before, he was using both versions of the game to get the absolute best time that he could on any given stages.
61
He would also always keep track of his total time using his best runs for each characters, regardless of versions which was uncommon at the time.
62
NT was a really talented player and was mainly focused on BTT. He did got 3 wrs for BTP and had one of the best THS ever but this is nothing compared to his BTT achievements.
63
He took down 1 by 1 every BTT wrs in the game with the only exception being Falcon. He had the second best time 9.29 while WR was 9.23 by Isai.
64
He was unstoppable and the best BTT players by far at the time. He easily took down WRs from the US version like Mario - Link and Yoshi which were previously shared between Isai and Marth1.
65
NT did all that simply by maxing existing strats. He did go for harder strats notably Pikachu up-b edgecancel which got him a new pb but he already had WR without it.
66
He did try the harder / TAS strat like fox btt early T9 cycle but to no avail.
67
He was able to make use of the rockslide on kirby BTP which allowed for the first sub 30 second ever ! This was one of his most impressive run.
68
A lot of Taser came from this Era, notably Jpleal10 (the best at the time), Haru, Antdgar, BlazeSSB. This sparked some level of competition and optimizations between Taser. Jpleal10 was by far way better than all of them.
69
70
Notable Milestones :
71
NT was the first to achieve sub 2:15 THS for BTT (This was using both versions which is more common nowadays)
72
NT held the best THS for BTT for 9+ years (2007/08-2017)
73
74
Second barrier broken by the community :
75
BTT : Luigi sub 11, DK sub 9
76
BTP : Kirby sub 30
77
BTT THS combined sub 2:15

2011-2016Dead Era
80
Not much happened during this era. Me and Pokefantom started playing BTT in 2012 while competing casually against each other.
81
Both our totals were in the low 2:2x range after 1 month. We were both good but unable to do most of the WRs strats as they were simply too hard for us at the time.
82
I stopped playing due to University starting, but Pokefantom kept grinding and was able to eventually get some really respectable times and the 2nd best total time behind NT.
83
He was even able to beat 1 of his WR, Mario by 1 frame ! But that's about it, NT was simply too good on every other stages.
84
Pokefantom was also able to get a nice new WR on Mario BTP, his favorite BTP stage.
85
A japanese player F1900 was also able to lower Ness BTT WR
86
No other top player was playing so not much was happening. It seemed like most scores were maxed or strong enough and that's as far as the game would go.
87
Pokefantom also stopped playing around 2014-2015, only a few people were playing / recording themselves at that point and usually they were pretty average.
88
89
Notable Milestones :
90
Pokefantom got the 2nd best THS for BTT (using all versions) and the 3rd best THS for BTT using only the US version
91
92
Second barrier broken by the community :
93
BTP THS combined sub 4:25

2016-2017Rebirth Era
96
The resurection of smash 64 BTT. I felt like coming back after a 5 years hiatus. Speedrun was getting more appearance everywhere since the Twitch era, I wanted to speedrun again my favorite game. Also the fact that I was quite bored with competitive smash 64.
97
I first decided to build this spreadsheet to keep track of all the world records since the last website that was tracking it (AllisBrawl) went down around 2016.
98
Finding most infos was super annoying and difficult due to lack of videos for any world records. (Exception NT / Pokefantom)
99
I then started playing and got WR one after the other. Primarly by copying previous strats and doing a lot of video analysis of my runs and other peoples runs.
100
Japanese version is overall faster for BTT so most (9/12) world records use it. I did wanted to compete fairly against legend like marth1 and Isai so I was also grinding the US version so I could see if I was better than them or not.
