Trips for KidsĀ® is a San Francisco Bay Area non-profit that provides mountain bike outings for youth who would not otherwise be exposed to these types of activities. Our goal is to combine lessons in personal responsibility, achievement, nutrition, fitness and environmental awareness through the development of practical skills and the simple act of having fun. The Trips for Kids Re-Cyclery program focuses on recycling used bikes and parts, and provides job-training programs for youth. These recycled bikes provide safe, environmentally friendly, and affordable transportation for both children and adults.

The bike shop is a social enterprise, placed in a neighborhood that would be a bike shop desert otherwise. It meets the mission while generating revenue. We're currently funded by 85% earned income from $225k worth of volunteer hours and $100k in in-kind donations. Most of that volunteer time goes to program delivery.

Here's the other bike coops:

Gearin Up Bicycles in NE DC. They opened in November. We've provided them hundreds of hours in volunteer support (ongoing) and thousands in tools and parts.

There's also Phoenix Bikes, The Bike House, and Mt Rainier Bike Coop but we don't really do anything with any of them. Velocity and Gearin up Bicycles would like to organize a regional bicycle cooperative coalition to have recurring meetings to share ideas, offer others support in different ways, etc.
We don't track any of these stats. We should to apply for grants.

Right now our focus is expanding our digital presence for more volunteer recruitment. Particularly retired folks. We think if we coordinate more with the city of Alexandria's parks and recs program, that would really help because they offer both adult education and retired persons with activities.

We're also working on refining our training program. We've found the primary reason for low volunteer retention, outside of just not enough time, if they feel overwhelmed with all the new things to learn in the shop. Now, we train volunteers by components. The first time they come in they might only true wheels. Then they'll adjust/repack hubs. Then adjust brakes, and so on. New volunteers have loved the concept.

We triage all bikes which come in first and tag it with a checklist to determine what needs to be worked on. It makes it much faster for preparing a volunteer with a component to learn on. If a volunteer wants to learn deraileurs, we'll find 6 or 7 bikes with checklists which indicate the derailuers need to be adjusted. Once they're adjusted we'll check that off the list and put them back.

We started that training in February and our retention rate has nearly doubled. We're growing faster.

We want to better promote events by predefining standards channels outside of typical social media such as local blogs, newspapers, meetup, etc.

We also want to implement an earn a bike program for veterans and current service members.

I'm happy to further discuss anything I just mentioned or anything else you'd be interested in talking about. Putting together a survey is a great idea. Call me if you'd like to talk more. 703.863.4464
