| UCross Foundation | A favorite among writers (including alumni Annie Proulx!), this colony is located on a 20,000-acre working cattle ranch in Wyoming. It serves 100 artists per year, with up to ten people in residence at any one time — typically four writers, four visual artists, and two composers. Lunches are delivered to your door, while dinners are eaten together in a group; towels, linens, and weekly housekeeping is provided. Residencies last two to six weeks and are free of charge. There’s a $40 nonrefundable application fee and the application deadline for fall 2024 is January 15 2024;
| Rockvale Writers Colony | College Grove, TN | https://rockvalewriterscolony.org/ | One of my favorites because it's affordable and easy to schedule. Work hours are respected during the day, so it's a very quiet, idyllic countryside vibe. In the evenings, many writers eat together, though that is not expected, so working through dinner is normal, too. House used to be a bed and breakfast and feels like it. Do note that enslaved people did work this land and are not properly acknowledged. | RWC charges a highly subsidized rate of $425 per week for rooms in the Farmhouse and Cabin. Weekly stays in the larger, more private Ogilvie Granary cost $475.00 per week. Mini-residencies of 1-3 nights are charged at the nightly rate of $100.00. | Any writer of any genre, age 21 and up, who is actively working on a writing project. | None
| Hambidge Center | Rabun Gap, GA | https://www.hambidge.org/ | Old rustic residency in the middle of the gorgeous North GA woods. Has become fairly competitive. Mixed genres, including visual artists, musicians, academics, and writers. Communal dinners and daytime work hours. No internet in the cabins but internet is accessible in main house. There are no workshops, critiques, nor required activities. Alums have access to fill-in list for future residencies. | $250 per week
| Lillian Smith Center | Rabun County, GA | https://www.piedmont.edu/lillian-e-smith-center/artist-retreat/ | The Artist Residency Program at the LES Center offers a retreat for individuals who pursue varied forms of artistic expression, critical inquiry, and social justice. Super interesting history re: queer social justice/civil rights movement. Mix of rustic and newer build cabins. Feel free to mention my name (Shannon Yarbrough) on your application if you apply because the director loves knowing how word is spread about this hidden gem. | $100 for a weekend, $200 for a week and $400 for two weeks to help defray the basic expenses of maintenance and operation. A $50.00 non-refundable deposit is required to reserve all residencies and is due when a schedule is confirmed with the resident managers.
| In Cahoots | Petaluma, CA | https://incahootsresidency.com/ | Primarily for printmakers, but there's one writer's spot! I had a great time working alongside printmakers and comparing creative processes. Petaluma countryside is beautiful and inspirational. | https://incahootsresidency.com/about/#pricing
| Vermont Studio Center | Johnson, VT | https://vermontstudiocenter.org/ | A residency for both writers and visual artists. About 10 writers are there each session. It is juried application. There are a few full scholarships, but everyone is subsidized. You stay in a range of converted buildings nearby and have a studio (with a view of the river) in the Writer's Building. They also feed you, though no midday delivery a la MacDowell!

| Wildacres Retreat | Little Switzerland, NC | https://wildacres.org/wildacres-residency-program-w-app/ | Spacious, updated cabins on a property that hosts other events. Most people on the property are not part of the residency program. Cabins have full kitchens and residents can eat all meals in the dining hall, which hosts the other groups. | Free | Artists in any medium | Applications open in August and close in October | Denise Long attended Wildacres in 2022. The cabins were lovely, and food (cafeteria style) is provided for all meals. The only internet is in the main lodge, and there was no cell reception at my cabin. The staff were delightful and there can be anywhere from 1-4 artists there at a time. Feel free to reach out on slack if you have questions!
| Hedgebrook | Whidbey Island, WA | https://www.hedgebrook.org/writers-in-residence | Individual cottages on beautiful area of island near Seattle. All meals/food is provided, and residents are expected to attend dinner with other residents in the farmhouse each night. Cottages are rustic (heated by wood stove) with loft bedrooms and only a powder room (all baths/showers need to be done in a separate bath house). | Free | women-identified writers,18 and older | Applications open for a window once per year for the following year's residencies | Denise attended Hedgebrook as a resident in 2018. The experience was amazing and highly recommended. When I went, there was no cell reception at the cottages and only internet in the farmhouse (where there is a library, snacks, and where you have dinner each night). The residents are extremely well cared for and there are usually between 6 and 9 writers there at a time. Feel free to reach out on slack if you have questions!
| Kimmel Harding Nelson (KHN) Center for the Arts | Nebraska City, NE | https://www.khncenterforthearts.org/residency | Fully furnished apartments that are usually shared with at least one other roommate. Writers have a separate space for writing (usually an office in the apartment). Artists in other mediums have a studio that's separate from the apartment. | Free (with weekly stipend) | Artists in any medium | Application deadlines are MARCH 1 and SEPTEMBER 1 annually*. | Denise attended KHN in 2019, and it was my favorite residency I've been to. They don't provide any meals, but each apartment has a full kitchen and they provide a weekly stipend. Nebraska City is a small town (no public transportation) but it does have some lovely parks and orchards and the staff take you on a quick history tour of the town. The staff are great and the other artists who were there were lovely (which is important because one of them--a visual artist--was my roommate). Feel free to reach out on slack if you have questions!
