Results - Detailed
This is the full data on all the bars.
5
Results - Simplified
Just the main scores of the bars.
6
7
I scored each bar in 3 categories out of 10. Think of the scores like school grade (i.e. a 7/10, or 70%, is about average, while a 5/10 is very bad).
8
1. Protein content
A score based on the percent of calories that came from protein.
9
The scoring formula divides the protein content of a bar by the maximum of any bar, then multiplies by 10 to get a score out of 10.
10
2. CostA score based on the typical cost per 10 grams of protein.
11
The formula is a bit more complicated than protein content but similar. It compares the cost per 10 grams of a bar to the cheapest, and then scales it to a score out of 10.
12
3. TasteOf course this is subjective, but should give you a ballpark idea of which ones taste better than others. I've included my taste test notes that explain each score.
13
14
Why score cost based on cost per 10 grams and not per bar?
15
I needed a way to take into account the quantity of protein in each bar. I could either do this as part of the protein score or the cost score.

If I factored it into the "protein" score, it would lessen the impact of the macros (so a bar could score well with a lot of sugar for example). If it's not factored into the "cost score", then a super tiny bar that's cheap would score well, even though you'd need to eat multiple to get any real protein.

Ultimately, I had to make a choice between the 2 options, and I thought it was better to change the cost score to be "per 10 grams of protein", instead of "per bar".
16
My goal: To test as many top rated and recommended vegan protein bars that I could. You can see most of my collection above, but I tested an additional few since then.

Prices in this spreadsheet will change over time
18
In order to make this spreadsheet as useful as possible in the future, it's designed to updated prices on a regular basis. So if you see the cost score (and overall score) changing day-to-day, that's why.

The website version does not update automatically, but I will periodically make updates.

Disclaimer/Affiliate Links/Etc.
21
There are no affiliate links in the spreadsheet, but there are on the website. This post hasn't been sponsored by anyone, and I didn't receive any of the bars for free, so there's no incentive for me to rank one over the other. Even if there was, I think I designed the testing process to be reasonably bias-proofed.
