This drill will get the kids a lot of ground balls in all four of the IF positions. As you get older continue to do this drill with all kids getting a chance at all spots. Drill also will make kids focus during drill because balls are being hit and thrown in many different directions. We don't want kids to charge ball and stop feet right before fielding the ball. This drill will help us work on getting around the ball and have feet moving toward our target when we field it.Working on reaction to the ball being hit at you. Player with have to make quick decisions. Do we attack, let the ball come to you. It is all about reaction to the ball. NOT thinking, reacting.

Kids go to whatever spot they like. Even number at each position. Two coaches hitting IF, going through 3 rounds of hitting balls. Round one has coach on 3B side hit to SS and they flip to 2B, coach on 1B side hits to 3B and they throw to 1B. Round 2 has coach on 3B side hit to SS and they throw to 1B, coach on 1B side hits to 3B and they throw to 2B (SS needs to stay back). Round 3 has coach on 3B side hit to 1B and they throw to 3B, coach on 1B side hits to 2B and they flip to SS. All kids rotate to all spots. As you get older kids may not rotate as much, but this drill allows all kids to play the positions.Set the cones up like the diagram. Have kids get ready, they can use a hop or Left, Right. Start without rolling ball. Set ball up in front of cone 3. Have kids take step around towards cone 2 and move toward where they would field the ball. Can add ball in as you progress.Works best with corner infielders. Have them face away from Home Plate. Coach is at home plate. Throws ball up, hits it with fungo and as he hits he yells NOW. That signals the IF to turn around and react to the ball.

This is a perfect drill if you want to get a lot of infield practice in. Rotate all kids to all positions. Keep the kids moving. Quicker they get balls picked up the more reps you get. Watch all players at all positionsThis is one of many 5 minute defensive drills. You could use this as part of a series of 5 minute drills that you rotate your entire team through. This is one of many 5 minute defensive drills. Teach the kids to charge the ball hard. Get feet in proper position. Hands down and when you step with right foot ball is out of glove and thrown. This drill will really focus on the underhand throw/toss. Used mostly from 2B to SS for a DP or get the lead runner. Also used from SS to 2B when they are close together. P's will use it throwing to 1B some, as well as 1B to P covering base. 2B to 1B also could use this if we are tight together.Work on making a good accurate flip to the base. Needs to be strong flip. Thumb stays down. Used mostly by SS to 2B or 2B to SS for DP.

Have kids line up in normal fielding position. Coach stands at home plate or 30+ ft away. Coach rolls ball to player. Player charges, gets feet in position, bend down to get ball, step with right foot and get ready to throw ball. You don't have to have kids throw ball. You can practice without ball first and then add ball in. Video shows how to drill.Kids need to be in a square. They should be about 15/20 ft apart. Older kids farther apart. Work on making a nice strong underhand toss. Catch ball out front, momentum towards target, follow through. Don't cheat, stay in position. Follow your throw to the back of the line you threw to. Arm stays straight, swing it towards the target.Kids need to be in a square. They should be about 15/20 ft apart. Older kids farther apart. Work on making a nice strong flip. This is one of many 5 minute defensive drills. This drill will work on having the kids catch the ball and be ready to make a quick throw to the next base. If you time the kids it adds an element of game like pressure. This drill will really work on the SS rounding the ball and 3B cutting the SS off and fielding the ball. You will get a lot of reps in a very short time with this drill. This is a very basic drill that a coach can work on with players or players could work on with a partner. Balls rolled at middle cone would be balls hit at you, also will simulate backhands and forehands.

Even number of kids at each base. Ball starts at home plate. Throw from Home to 3B to 2B to 1B. Kids at the base getting ready to receive the ball need to have their hands up and ready to catch the ball. Staying on the base is NOT required for this drill. Be ready to catch and make an accurate throw to next base. You can run it in reverse as well.Players in lines at 3B and SS. Coach sits on a bucket about 15f in front of home plate in the middle of 3B and SS. He rolls ball 1 out towards SS, player at 3B cuts in front of SS and gets ball, he rolls ball 2 out right of SS, SS lets 3B player go through and rounds the ball and fields it.Set the cones up with one in the middle. The other two are 5ft to left and right and back 10ft. Player starts about 20ft behind the middle cone. Coach starts about 20ft in front of middle cone. Coach rolls balls to center cone, kids use side step to get around the ball (forward momentum drill), balls thrown the cone on the left would be a backhand for RH player, ball thrown to cone on right side would be a ball to the forehand of a RH player. Balls to forehand would be a good time to work on the spin around move. Video shows that very clearly.
