STUDENT DRESS CODE

Clinton Massie Middle School respects students' rights to express themselves in the way they dress.

All students who attend CMMS are also expected to respect the school community by dressing
5
appropriately for a Middle School educational environment. Student attire should facilitate participation
6
in learning as wel as the health and safety of students and the adults that supervise them. This policy
7
was created in cooperation with student advisors and administrators and is intended to provide
8
guidance for students, staff and parents.

Minimum requirements:

Clothing must cover areas from one
12
armpit across to the other armpit, down
13
to approximately 3-4 inches in length
14
on the upper thighs (see images).

Tops must have straps that stay on the
16
shoulders. Rips or tears in clothing should
17
be lower than the 3-4 inch mark on the legs.

Shoes must be worn at should be safe for
19
the school environment.

See-through or mesh garments must not be
21
worn without appropriate coverage underneath
22
that meet the minimum requirements of the
23
dress code.

Headgear, including hats, hoodies, and caps are
25
not allowed unless permitted for religious, medical,
26
or other reason by school administration.

Specialized courses may require specialized attire,
28
such as sports uniforms or safety gear.

Additional Requirements:

Clothing may not depict, imply, advertise or advocate illegal, violent or lewd conduct,
33
weaponns, or the use of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana or other controlled substances.

Clothing may not depict or imply pornography, nudity or sexual acts.

Clothing may not display or imply vulgar, discriminatory, or obscene language or images.

Clothing may not state, imply, or depict hate speech/imagery targeting groups based on
37
race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation,gender identity, religious affiliation, or any other
38
protected classification.

Sunglasses may not be worn inside the building, with the exception of transition lenses.

Clothing and accessories that endanger student or staff safety may not be worn.

Apparel, jewelry, accessories, tattoos or manner of grooming that, by virtue of its color,
42
arrangement, trademark or any other attribute, denotees membership in a gang that
43
advocates illegal or disruptive behavior is prohibited.

The administration at each building reserves the right to determine what constitues appropriate dress. If a student
46
is determined to be out of compliance with the dress code, they will first be given the opportunity to correct the issue.

If appropriate clothing is not available or if the student refuses dress-code appropriate clothing, parents will be called.
