Introduction

The Education Redesign Lab launched its Success Planning framework* in 2019 as a means of highlighting critical elements of various modes of personalized supports for children. This framework aimed to help create awareness amongst schools and communities on the importance of one-on-one relationships between adults and children, and the need for integrated, comprehensive support systems.

Personalized student success planning programs are based on 4 key components:

1. A
Navigator - an adult who forms a relationship with a child and, ideally, their family, and develops and understanding of the child's needs and interests;
2. A
plan for action and a process for enacting it;
3. A coordinated
system of supports and opportunities;
4. A
data platform to capture information overtime.

This tool aims to help schools, communities, districts, policymakers, and researchers in developing cost estimates for success planning programs.

Each of the individual success planning cost components have several subcomponents which have been listed below.

1.
Navigators - Personnel Costs; Training & Development Costs
2.
Action Plans & Processes - Personnel Costs
3.
Support Systems & Opportunities - Cost of Summer Camps; Cost of Afterschool Programs
4.
Data Platform - Cost of data platform; Cost of Database Administrator

(Additional rows have been provided for each subcomponent if the user has other costs which they would want listed).

Instructions

1. Input the total number of students in your success planning program in cell D8.

2. Cells highlighted in
blue contain drop-down menus in which the user is able to select their relevant option. For example, selecting "Massachusetts" and "Bachelor's + 3 to 5 years" for personnel costs under the Navigator section will automatically provide the mean annual salary for a Navigator in the state of Massachusetts that has a Bachelor's degree and 3-5 years of experience.

3. Users are able to input numeric figures in the cells highlighted in
green. Please enter only numeric values. Do not insert currency symbols (e.g. $, £, etc).

4. Please do not make any amendments to cells which are not highlighted in either blue or green.

5. Additional rows are provided at the end of each cost component to insert costs which have not been listed by the tool. Please provide a short description of the costs in Column B and the numeric value of the costs in Column G.

6. In certain instances, certain columns will return a value of . This means that the reporting standards were not met for that particular state and hence it was not possible to devise a cost estimate. This will cause the cell in the 'Total Cost' column to return a #VALUE! error. Click on this cell and press the delete key on your keyboard in order for the system to calculate the total estimated cost for that particular cost component.

7. Total cost estimates for each cost component will be displayed in cells
F11, F37, F55, and F78. Total estimates for the personalized success planning program as a whole will be displayed in cell E7. Cell G8 will also provide an insight to the cost per student for such a program.
