12/17/2015 15:10:52ReneeRicoDancing Men CowlKnittingScarf/CowlThe Adventure of the Dancing Men
This stranded knit cowl in the round features the Dancing Men Cypher in the story. It will be in two or three colors - only two colors for the stranded knitting, and feature a secret message using the cypher (something short such as "Knit in Secret")

or alternatively, I could create a pattern in which the knitter creates their own message using the alphabet cyber I would provide in charted form, much as the Madame DeFarge's stole does.

link to Dancing Men Font that I would use to create charts: http://www.mygeotools.de/tools/codetabellen/images/8f99808749695e6369538697ffe8b062.jpg

1/11/2016 20:08:07Sarah Jo Burch0Moss RoseKnittingSkirtThe Naval Treaty (from Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes)
Full below-the-knee skirt worked in the round from the waist down with sport-weight yarn. Stockinette in three shades of grey, beginning with darkest at waist and transitioning to lightest at hem, with red lining waistband, hem, and pockets (two on front, the knit-with-waste-yarn-then-go-back-and-make-them-later kind), and princess-type "seaming" to create flattering increase lines.
(Reflecting on the moment of wonder in the midst of logical utility, because I'm sappy that way, if you're wondering what on earth this has to do with the story)

Adler Lace KnittingLace HandkerchiefA Scandal in Bohemia
A lace handkerchief knit in in crochet cotton in a style reminiscent of the Shetland/Orenburg shawl styles - square center panel knit flat, with a border picked up and knit in the round. Three different lace patterns form an antique style pattern, fit for a prima donna as she marries her English lawyer. Perfect for a modern day wedding or as a sweet present to any young lady for dabbing eyes or fluttering it in the air.

I have several different lace patterns I am playing around with, hence the in progress sample. I might end up with multiple combinations forming multiple individual handkerchiefs. The name is not set yet, but Alder Lace is what I have the files titled on my computer...

Irene Adler's Opera Shawlknit and crochetShawlA Scandal in Bohemia
Since Irene is a retired opera singer from American, she has several shawls. This circular one is done with laceweight yarn with dreamy drippy crochet flowers and vines with a garter section that hugs the shoulders like a capelet leaving the hands free for opera glasses.

Beryl Stapleton and the Butterflies are FreeKnittingShawlThe Hound of the Baskervilles
Top-down, 8-wedge shawl in Anzula Vera. The Coco colorway and vertical lace stitch pattern of the body section are reminiscent of tall spikes of heather flowers, while the knitted-on diamond lace edging in the Grace colorway invokes gray-green moss and iridescent butterfly wings. A contrasting ribbed border is knit at the same time as the edging. An optional butterfly pin can be used either as a fastener or decoration. Have photos, schematic, charts.

Silver Blaze is a delightful little challenge for he adventurous knitter. With a tip of the hat to Sir Arthur's wonderful tale this double knit hat features an elegant geometric design on one side - reminiscent of a jockey's racing colors - and when turned inside out reveals a single blaze splashed across a solid background.

2/25/2016 21:08:39Keilah Fokkeilahfok@gmail.comThe Commissionaire's WifeCrochetShawletteThe Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle
This textured boomerang shawlette was inspired by the Countess of Morcar's blue carbuncle. It was named after the commissionaire's wife, who pulled the precious stone out of a goose's crop.

The subtle texture of the linen stitch highlights the tonal nature of the yarn used. Combined with the stripes of lace, the stitches represent the facets of the infamous blue carbuncle.

Color work pillow; on the front will be a stylized fish, similar to images of fish tattoos. On the back will be the Chinese symbols for "good fortune". Ideally, this will be knit with a red/orange/gold yarn for the fish and symbols, and a dark (gray? black?) for the background.

I sent an image of the partial chart, but it doesn't look like you have received it.
Essay will be about fish symbols in literature.

2/26/2016 17:39:30Becky Greenebecky.g@comcast.netScandalous CoronetCrochetHatThe Adventure of the Beryl Coronet
Crocheted, two-layer hat made from fingering weight yarn. Top layer will be lacy and light-colored; bottom layer will be dark and plain double crochet. The lace layer will have 39 "gems" set about it. Slightly oversized hat, fitted brim, probably with a button closure.

There's a great quote in the story about a "horrible national scandal", which will be the essay's jumping off point (NOT political!), but discussing what constitutes a scandal in literature.

However ImprobableKnittingScarf/CowlThe Sign of the Four
However Improbable is a moebius cowl or longer infinity loop. The stitch pattern is an original reversible cable with a different appearance on each side: Side A is a simple twisted rope; side B resembles a ribbon with a ring pattern. The cowl is worked flat with an odd number of cables running lengthwise, and set on a half drop so that the twists in the rope open out the ring pattern. It is joined using guided Kitchener grafting so that the seam disappears and each side of the fabric is identical.

It is ideally worked in a USA worsted or a heavy UK DK. The yarn can be heathered or solid coloured, ideally light in colour and smooth to show off the cable pattern. The yarn needs to have a good spring to it.
I have a sample in an unsuitable yarn (too heavy and drapey) but I can send a photo showing the stitch pattern.
