Introduction to Resources for Equity and Archaeological Practice

Purpose
4
5
The spreadsheet shares links to resources on equity and archaeological practice in the areas of Local, Indigenous, and Descendant Communities; Gender and LGBTQI+ Identities; Race and Class; Workplace and Education; and Other Resource Collections. It began as an outgrowth of a 2021 virtual seminar on Equity and Archaeological Practice hosted by the University of Maine, and also builds on a previous spreadsheet of Antiracism resources initiated by the SAA Social Justice Task Force. This collection of resources, administered by the SAA, is intended to be a living document built and maintained through community contributions and collaboration.

How to Use:

9
The spreadsheet is organized by multiple tabs for each of the areas listed above, with resources described by their hyperlinked title, creator, type, and an indication whether the resource is open-access. Some resources are listed in more than one tab. Tabs can be found at the bottom of the spreadsheet.

Each tab can be sorted by column names. For returning users, it may be useful to sort by "Date Added" to find the most recent additions.

Limitations
12
Categories of identity are usually problematic and rarely satisfying, and the categories used to organize the resources in this spreadsheet are similarly imperfect, especially given the intersectionality of both identity and inequity. For example, resources on/for Indigenous communities and archaeologists are mainly in the "Local Indigenous, and Descendent Communities" tab but many could just as well be included under the dimension of race and racism in the "Race and Class" tab (and many are). We have attempted to cross-list resources in multiple tabs as appropriate. We welcome your comments on this organization as well as instances when a resource should be cross-listed but isn't.

The "Open Access" column can sometimes be misleading, in cases where the resource links to a website or bibliography that contains both open-access and restricted (fee) materials. In cases where a resource link provides useful information that is open access, we list the resource as such even if some materials (including individual books and articles listed in a bibliography) are not open access.
