As a high school reading specialist, I teach Title 1 students who are 2 or more grade levels behind. Due to hardships and childhood trauma of various kinds, some of my 9th and 10th graders read as low as a 3rd grade level. I provide basic needs like snacks, water, lunch money and more on a regular basis, yet my students remain so positive, resilient, and ready to learn.

Hello!

My name is Sherrise Figueroa and I am a special education chemistry teacher. My co-teacher and I are going into our second year teaching chemistry at our school community. Last year was the first year the school provided a chemistry option. We made due with what we could. In house we frequently needed to supplement materials as our lab was previously used by another school and we didn’t have many materials for ourselves. Our administration was very supportive in making the class as engaging and hands on as possible. We even had an outsourced program come in and make labs a reality. My co-teacher and I have so many hopes going into year 2 but our lab is bare bones after taking inventory at the end of the year. We want to continue to make our classroom a fun place for learning science as our students struggle with the subject. However, the joy is seeing their faces light up when they engage with labs and the reality of chemistry in our everyday lives. We appreciate any and all of the support we receive.

I teach 9th-12th grade mathematics at a Title 1 high school in North Carolina. This will be the start of my 7th year of teaching and I’m so excited to start this year. I’ve noticed a positive correlation between the environment my students have and their performance. When they feel taken care of because I provide school supplies, a clean and organized room, and home made baked goods (I love baking-and frequently use one of your cookbooks!) they work to their potential. They are more likely to have good attitudes about my classroom rules and procedures, and they develop a growth mindset. I am working hard with the help of two students this year, who felt like my classroom (which hasn’t been decorated since year one of teaching), needed to be updated. We have been scavenging thrift stores, Facebook marketplace place, and prime day deals to find supplies to make a cozy organized environment for my students to learn in. I’ve also included supplies I normally buy through out the year for my students. They take better notes when their highlighters match mine, when they have whiteout to use, and they don’t have to worry about being singled out for not having supplies they might need. This year is sure to be busy and exciting in my first grade classroom. First grade is a pivotal year for students, and I am constantly looking for ways that I can stretch my students’ learning and thinking, while making school and my classroom a safe space that they love. I want to promote a lifetime love of learning. We love reading rich literature and discussing lessons we can learn from reading these books. We love exploring with math tools and gaining a strong number sense. And in my classroom, we love becoming a school family together. I love to provide my students with opportunities to experience science in a way that relates to their own lives and also expose them to experiences and topics that they were unaware of before. Hi! I teach 10th-grade English. I like to bring hands-on projects into the stories we read to help engage the students. We do a lot of art-based activities, because who says high schoolers don’t like art in the classroom?! This is my 13th year teaching, and while I understand using my own money for supplies is a part of the job, it never gets easier. Thanks in advance for any support! My classroom is the school library in a low income school in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas, Texas. Every kid in the school comes to the library every week for story time, hands-on engaging lessons, STEM explorations, and book checkouts. It is my personal passion to make the library a place where kids feel safe to explore, thrive and fall in love with stories and learning. My library is primarily funded through donations and my personal wallet. My wishlist helps me get the best new exciting books for my kids, STEM centers, prizes for schoolwide reading contests and initiatives I hold for the kids, and supplies for book care.
