This will prepare you well for the digital scene painting workshop next week. This is a rare opportunity to study with a real pro! Learn methods to draw the model accurately in good proportion with an awareness of anatomical structure. Learn how to draw characters from observation by studying famous 2D characters and 3D action figures. An important component of every animation portfolio is an outdoor perspective with characters in the scene. Get an introduction into how the basic laws of perspective and how to set up outdoor scenes based on photos. Learn how to add a character into the scene. Figure Drawing 1: At Chester St Studio with Garth Laidlaw with live model Learn basics of figure drawing with a live model. Learn how to use your basic knowledge of anatomy from the previous class. Get an introduction to quick sketching methods that are so important to animation figure drawing skills and learn various gesture drawing approaches. Individual workshop fee $90 or $75 w full camp registrationStory 1: Intro to Story Animation Instructor Garth Laidlaw. Learn about story types and how to develop a story arc. Over the duration of the camp you will be developing a story as a group. Your instructor will lead you through how to set up a folk tale and make choices together for the story. Garth will explain how you'll be developing the story through rest of the course. Individual workshop fee $65 or $50 w full camp registration Story 2 and Character Development 1: Animation Instructor Garth Laidlaw Garth will guide the group in ways to make the story unique and learn how to make story fragments. Get an introduction into character design, rotation, expressions and action poses. Individual workshop fee $65 or $50 w full camp registrationStory 3: Intro to Storyboarding 1: Animation Instructor Garth Laidlaw Now that you have some basic characters you will get an introduction to storyboarding by looking at great film examples, resources and books. Your instructor will introduce you various approaches and concepts in storyboarding. The group story will be divided into different sections and for each student to develop individually. You'll have a working partner in from the group as a sounding board and continue to collaborate with the group as a whole too. One of the most important methods of mastering figure drawing is to learn how to draw the skeleton. Learn about the structure of the human body that gives it the outer form you see Build your understanding anatomy to inform your figure drawings. Learn straight forward methods to draw the model accurately in good proportion. Get an introduction to effective use of conte stick to create classic figure drawings. Morning 9-12Drawing Methods 7: Geometric Object Drawing Fundamentals: Fundamentals Instructor Karen Kesteloot Learn how to draw each type of geometric object and apply the learning to a character or prop in your story. Make a still life or scene from your story with geometric objects. Your instructore will demonstrate how you can draw well structured objects, characters, props and vehicles all based on observation while learning the rules of 3D structure. Individual workshop fee $65 or $50 w full camp registrationPerspective Drawing 2: Interior Room Scenes 1: Fundamentals Instructor Karen Kesteloot Being able to place characters in an interior space offers you so much creative freedom. Many students find it challenging to accurately protray rooms in perspective but it's often a required piece in a portfolio for college applications. In this workshop you will learn how to draw a room in perspective based on observation. Individual workshop fee $65 or $50 w full camp registrationIntro to Drawing Hands 1: Fundamentals Instructor Karen Kesteloot Get a thorough introduction into how to draw hands using straight forward methods that make drawing these complex forms simple and systematic. Take a first pass at creating the type of action pose that is required in an animation application portfolio. Individual workshop fee $65 or $50 w full camp registrationDynamic Composition 2: Scene Layout Design and Action of Characters: Animation Instructor Garth Laidlaw Now that you've learned about the basics of compostion let Garth help you design effective scenes from your story with your characters in action. You'll learn some methods and start playing with one of them in class. If you have access to software and a computer during the camp you can start pluggin in your story board and building it up. If you don't then you can work on creating a flip book or frame by frame drawings you can scan into your computer to make a simple slide show. Individual workshop fee $90 or $75 w full camp registrationDrawing Methods 8: Studio Session 1: 10am to 12pm Fundamentals Instructor Karen Kesteloot Take time to complete projects and ask questions to deepen your understanding and skills in drawing. This would be a great chance to learn effective line weight control and hierachy in your hand in action drawings or perfect your perspective drawings. Afternoon 1-4Storyboarding 2: Animation Instructor Garth Laidlaw Continue working on your storyboards, with the goal of completing around 20 panels each and building towards the storyboard pitch night this evening. This is a high light of the camp! Lots of fun and laughs as the campers share their story ideas! Individual workshop fee $65 or $50 w full camp registrationFigure Drawing 4: Quick Sketching Methods of Clothed Figures & Cafe Sketching: Instructors Karen Kesteloot & Garth Laidlaw Enjoy an outing in a local cafe to sketch people. Get introduced to basic sketching methods by Karen and next Garth will share quick sketching methods to capture people in action or at rest. Meet in the studio for some instruction and practice by drawing each other to prepare for going out to sketch people in cafes or outdoor public spaces. Karen will assist with the surrounding perspective elements and furnishings. Individual workshop fee $65 or $50 w full camp registrationDrawing Hands 2: Anatomy of the Hand: Instructor TBA Take the guess work out of drawing hands by learning about the anatomical structure. You'll see how combining knowledge with observation can make much stronger drawings. Now you'll feel confident to take on this often intimidating subject that is required in portfolio applications. $90 or $75 w full camp registrationDynamic Composition 3: Visual Story Telling-Hierarchy of Contrasts: Fundamentals Instructor Karen Kesteloot Now that you have designed a scene from your story it's time to maximize its effectiveness in tone and colour. Learn how ensure your story idea is coming across clearly by controlling the high lights, contrasts of values and colour and quality of the edges within your scene. Understanding how to design the hierarchy of contrasts enables you to make strong scenes that tell stories clearly and with maximum impact. Individual workshop fee $65 or $50 w full camp registrationAnimating 2: Intro to Adobe After Effects + TV Paint Animation Software: Animation Instructor Garth Laidlaw Garth will demonstrate how to use various animation computer software and show you great examples of animation to learn from. While you are each working on your individual projects Garth will be demonstrating how to bring the groups story boards to life in his computer using his Cintiq tablet and these various programs. Take turns assisting Garth in the process on his computer. Have time to work on your hand drawings, character rotation, storyboarding or digital paintings and get individual help on your drawings and paintings. By end of this class, they will have at least 3 storyboard panels that are well developed enough to make into an illustrated colour board for Anthony's classes. Individual workshop fee $65 or $50 w full camp registration Figure Drawing 5- At 20 Chester St Studio Animation Instructor Garth Laidlaw with live model Continue to develop your figure drawing skills with a live model. Learn how to put your deepening knowledge of anatomy into practice. Capture the figure in active poses as reference for the scene you will develop over the next week. Individual workshop fee $90 or $75 w full camp registrationDynamic Composition 1: Digital Painting Instructor Anthony diGiovanni. Now that you have a strong line it's time to pick a scene to protray. Learn the basics of layout and scene compostion from an expert concept artist. You'll discover how to make dynamic compositions and prepare for digital painting starting with construction paper cutouts. Make sure you bring your earlier perspective sketches and storyboards to select from and build upon. Individual workshop fee $90 or $75 w full camp registrationDigital Painting 1: Scene Layout Painting Digital Painting Instructor Anthony diGiovanni. You're ready to start painting your scene digitally! Learn the basics of digital painting using PhotoShop with a drawing tablet. Anthony will show you effective techniques and share tips and tricks to make painting scenes easy and fun. He'll help you take your scene designs to the next level. Individual workshop fee $90 or $75 w full camp registrationDigital Painting 2: Animation Instructor Garth Laidlaw Continue developing your scene you started with Anthony under Garth's instruction. Begin 1 to 2 more scenes from your storyboard sequence you designed with Garth and your classmates. Our goal is for you to have completed at least one strong character, one sequence of storyboards, and 1 to 3 digitally painted storyboard panels or scene layouts.
