Applied dual use biosecurity education Master degree (12 weeks) by the University of Bradford. It was my honor to be among the 100 countries I chose from the top 20 twenty young f scientists from the Global South working on topics related to the BWC to provide them with opportunities for capacity development and exposure to BWC technical discussions and negotiations at the multilateral level. It will also encourage the development of young professionals’ networks and provide the young scientists from the Global South with an opportunity to liaise and learn from multilateral disarmament experts.

3/25/2022 13:14:40LauraDillonlaurabelladillon89@gmail.comVictoria University of WellingtonNew ZealandStudent in BiotechnologyI'm trained in Biotechnology, primarily focusing on bacteria and protein evolution. I find this area fascinating, but have a broader interest in biosecurity and the risk of biotechnologies having unforeseen consequences that poses a significant threat, and figuring out how to anticipate this. I am interested in meta-science relevant to this, figuring out how the scientific process can be shaped to best support further focused research that maps out the consequences of biotechnologies. I have spent significant time researching the evolution of proteins, specifically how new protein coding genes emerge de novo (not from mutation from a pre-existing gene), and how this can be framed in terms of antibiotic risk and viral evolution. I know the research in this area well and can quickly learn new ideas from papers, and write reports summarising the important concepts. I have >2 years experience in wet labs working with E. coli and isolated proteins, working in a BSL-2 lab. In a team I can contribute knowledge from the technical biology side, summarising thorny concepts for my teammates and writing/editing well.

My current work utilizes graph theory to predict gene function to further vaccine development. I am knowledgeable in microbiology and political science, which lends well to the competition.
