|Italy||Schiavenza||Barolo Broglio||2017||92||Wine Advocate|
"A release of 6,700 bottles, the Schiavenza 2017 Barolo Broglio offers a robust aromatic and flavor profile that is driven not only by the ripeness of the vintage fruit but also by the oak rendering and extra spice. The wine shows a moment of softness or sweetness with cherry, dried raspberry and crème de cassis. Delicate notes of spice and tar also appear. The wine is soft and yielding in terms of structure and texture."

"Tasted in early March, the 2019 Sancerre La Côte des Monts Damnés offers a highly attractive bouquet of just-ripe plums, apricots, mango, passion fruit, elderflower, spicy/herbal and spring-like leafy terroir aromas with delicate iodine ad lemon notes in the background. From Kimmeridgian marls and aged on the lees for 10 months, this is a full-bodied, round and aromatic yet vital, fresh and tensioned picture-book Mont Damnés with lovely grapefruit bitters on the long and complex finish. The wine is round and intense, very elegant and perfectly balanced, just spectacular in its early accessibility. Possibly the finest of the last decade."
|France||Henri Bourgeois||Sancerre La Bourgeoise||2016||93||Wine Advocate|

|Italy||La Fiorita||Brunello di Montalcino Fiore di NO||2016||93||Jeb Dunnuck|
"Fiore di No is sourced from two vineyards, Pian Bossolino, and Poggio al Sole, from which it is only produced in the best vintage. The 2016 Fiore di No Brunello has more savory aromatics of cherry pit, fresh Mediterranean herbs, anise, and cedar. The palate has a balanced and firm structure that is forward with ripe red plum, fresh tobacco, and balsamic, giving way to building tannins and warming spice. |Spain||Viña Gormaz||Crianza||2016||92||Wine Enthusiast|
"A compact nose with blackberry and integrated oak aromas leads to a flush, round palate that's balanced and whole. Blackberry, black plum and cassis flavors are ripe and pleasing, with a touch of raw oak in support. An edgy finish with grating tannins suggests giving this as much air as possible before serving. Drink through 2027."

|Spain||Ego Bodegas||Goru Gold||2017||91||Vinous|

|Italy||Fattoria di Basciano||Chianti Rufina||2018||90||Wine Spectator|
"This is a densely textured red, rich, with vivid acidity and refined tannins propelling its black cherry, blackberry, leather, iron, woodsy and tobacco aromas and flavors. Fine balance, length and character. Drink now through 2032. 25,000 cases made, 2,000 cases imported."
|Italy||Guerrieri Rizzardi||Amarone della Valpolicella "Calcarole"||2013||94||Vinous|
"The decadent 2013 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Calcarole has a rich, dark bouquet that evokes memories of Christmas fruit cakes iced in brown-sugary frosting, served with a mug of hot cocoa. It’s velvety-smooth and full bodied, yet it maintains perfect balance, blending ripe black fruits with exotic spices, mocha and purple inner florals. Nearly a minute goes by and you can still taste lingering notes of dark chocolate contrasted by hints of bitter coffee. While the Calcarole shamelessly flaunts extroverted character, it does so with class. This is a blend of Corvina, Rondinella and Barbera that’s matured in a combination of barriques and large barrels. Well done."
|France||Domaine Du Pégau||Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée||2018||96||Decanter|
"Grown on varied lieux-dits around the appellation on a mix of soils, this was fermented in concrete then aged for 24 months in foudre. All whole bunch, which is evidenced by the pleasantly stemmy aromatics. Very full-bodied and concentrated, savoury despite the oak, with bay leaf and thyme. Very tannic, quite hard on the palate in fact. It's well balanced despite the alcohol, thanks to its concentration and intensity. It's an outlying style due to its darkness, hardness and brooding character. It will be fantastic in time however. But wait. Drinking Window 2026 - 2037"
|South Africa||Rustenberg||John X Merriman||2018||92||Vinous|
"The 2018 John X Merriman is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec matured in oak for 20 months. It offers an attractive nose of black plum, blueberry and violet scents, plus a subtle marine note in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a generous pinch of black pepper on the entry, good weight and the focus and precision I have come to expect from this top cuvée from Rustenberg. Classy."

"This brims with a zesty mix of blackberry, black currant and raspberry compote flavors, laced liberally with licorice root, sweet tobacco, garrigue and warm earth notes that almost hold sway through the finish, before a final kick of energetic fruit takes its encore. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Best from 2023 through 2036."
Domaine de la Charbonniere
Châteauneuf-du-Pape "Les Hautes Brusquieres Cuvée Speciale"
"Sleek and still tightly coiled, this has ample reserves of raspberry, cherry and plum pâte de fruit, along with enticing black tea, anise and apple wood accents. A suave wine, with latent minerality underscoring the finish. Grenache, Syrah and Counoise. Best from 2023 through 2038."

"Brilliant ruby-red. Smoke- and oak spice-accented cherry, dark berry and licorice scents show sharp definition and mineral lift. Chewy and focused on the palate, offering cassis, bitter cherry and espresso flavors that turn sweeter with air. The floral note repeats on the persistent, focused finish, which is shaped by taut, slow-building tannins. Aged in 80% French and 20% American oak for three years."
"Saturated garnet. Smoke- and spice-accented aromas of ripe red berries, lavender pastille, pipe tobacco and vanilla on the intensely perfumed nose. Gently chewy and focused on the palate, offering juicy blackberry, bitter cherry and licorice flavors that show strong, spicy lift and a hint of succulent herbs. Turns sweeter on the persistent, gently tannic finish, which echoes the floral and tobacco notes. I really like the blend of traditional and modern touches that this wine conveys."
"Lurid ruby-red. Oak-spiced cherry and red currant scents are complemented by suggestions of woodsmoke, cola and cured tobacco. Gently sweet and focused on the palate, offering taut red fruit and spicecake flavors that unfold very slowly on the back half. Dusty tannins add grip to a long, spicy finish that leaves a suggestion of bitter cherry behind. Aged in two-thirds French and one-third American oak barrels for 18 months."
"Deep violet. Pungent aromas of dark berries, licorice, tobacco and peppery spices, and a smoky nuance that builds in the glass. Sappy and expansive on the palate, offering gently sweet black raspberry, cherry and cracked pepper flavors and a touch of bitter chocolate. Finishes supple and spicy, with dusty framing tannins and a repeating tobacco note."
"Opaque ruby. Ripe dark berries, cherry pit and licorice on the spice-accented nose. Lush and appealingly sweet, offering juicy blackberry and cherry flavors that take on a smoky nuance with air. Closes spicy and long, with a hint of licorice and round, even tannins."
|Portugal||Prats & Symington||Post Scriptum de Chryseia||2018||91||Wine & Spirits|
"This is generous in its dark fruit flavors of floral blueberries and their skins along with woodland mushrooms. It's a fruit-driven wine, edged by bay laurel scents and peppery spice. Decant it for beef with black mushrooms."
|Portugal||Prats & Symington||Chryseia||2017||91||Wine & Spirits|
"This is a lithe and elegant vintage of Chryseia, a blend of Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca from three estate - Quinta de Roriz and (Quinta de) Perdiz, owned by the Prats & Symington partnership, and Vila Vela, owned by Rupert Symington and his mother, Penny. It's firmly structured, the heat of the vintage channeled into scents of dried currants and cranberries, lasting on the spicy floral notes of grape-skin tannins."
|Australia||Sidewood||Shiraz Adelaide Hills||2018||92 "Best Buy"||Wine & Spirits|
"This estate-grown shiraz ferments spontaneously with some whole bunches and whole berries, then it spends 18 months in French oak barrels, some 300-liter, some 500-liter, one-quarter of them new. The wine starts from a tight place, showing its intensity through scents of jasmine and pppercorn. Those aromas seem to lift out of the tannins while the fruit shows dark richness and pungency. Give this a year or two in the cellar to fully develop."
|Australia||Unico Zelo||Fresh A.F. Nero d'Avola Riverland||2020||92 "Best Buy"||Wine & Spirits|
"Laura and Brendan Carter produce a range of Nero d'Avola wines, working with fruit from Clare Valley, from the Adelaide Hills and from Barmera in Riverland. We only tasted the Fresh AF, the lightest of their neros, blended with old-vine zibibbo that grows along with it in Riverland - that kick of zibibbo makes it, as one taster said, 'a white-wine lover's red wine.' Well, it's a wine for this red-wine lover, too, as I couldn't resist the tart plum and cracked black pepper scents that poured out of this glass, surprisingly bold given the wine's light lavender color. Given its red-fruit length, this may be one of the best Riverland wines I've tasted. Built to drink now, especially if you're serving Sicilian snaks, like fried-potato crocchè, pannele or pizza secca."
|California||Grgich Hills Estate||Cabernet Sauvignon||2018||90||Vinous|
"The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is an attractive, mid-weight wine to drink now and over the next handful of years. Dried cherry, tobacco, licorice, cedar and earthy notes all grace this expressive, understated Cabernet from Grgich Hills."
"The 2018 Syrah is a powerhouse. Inky dark fruit and strong varietal notes scream out of the glass. Blackberry jam, dried herbs, licorice, sage, mint, graphite and black pepper all develop with a bit of coaxing. There is a lot of wine here, but a bit of patience is absolutely essential."
|California||Odette||Cabernet Sauvignon Estate||2018||94||Vinous|
"The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a powerhouse. It needs time to come together, as the elements are a bit disjointed, but there is a ton of potential, that much is clear. Dark blue/purplish berry fruit, spice, lavender, chocolate and white flowers abound. I would prefer to cellar the 2018 for a few years to allow the tannins to soften."
|California||Odette||Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve||2018||97||Vinous|
"The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is silky, perfumed and beautifully polished from start to finish. Lifted floral notes and a whole range of red/purplish berry fruits literally hover over the palate in a wine that marries power to finesse. Winemaker Jeff Owens coaxes striking nuance out of this Stags Leap site in the 2018 Reserve, a Cabernet that is incredibly sexy and alluring, even in the early going."
|California||CADE||Cabernet Sauvignon Estate||2018||95||Vinous|
"The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a total knock-out. Winemaker Danielle Cyrot has done a tremendous job taming the Howell Mountain tannins. There is still plenty of power and structure, but all the elements are so well balanced here. Inky dark red fruit, iron, new leather, blood orange, spice, a kiss of new French oak and game build in an opulent, brooding Cabernet loaded with personality."
|California||CADE||Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve||2018||97||Vinous|
"The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is laced with the essence of dark red/purplish berry fruit, blood orange, mint, spice and rose petal. Unctuous and deep, with striking balance and tons of allure, the Reserve is superb today. This is an especially rich, creamy style for Howell Mountain, but all the elements are very nicely woven together. Here, too, tannins are beautifully integrated."
|California||CADE||Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 13th Vineyard||2018||98||Vinous|
"The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon 13th Vineyard offers the most classic expression of Howell Mountain of the three Cabernets in the Cade range. It is loaded with scents of blackberry jam, graphite, pencil shavings, game, tobacco, incense and licorice. Unctuous and explosive in the glass, with tons of tannic heft, the 2018 is a wine to cellar for at least a few years. It is one of the very finest wines I have tasted from Cade under its current ownership. Dazzling."
|California||CADE||Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve||2018||98||Jeb Dunnuck|
"Moving to the two flagship releases, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve (86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Verdot, and the rest Malbec) is another inky hued release from this team and offers a thrilling nose of blueberries, black cherries, iron, cedar pencil, and bouquet garni. These carry to a full-bodied wine with beautiful mid-palate density, a soft, expansive texture, building tannins, and a gorgeous finish. Ranking with the top handful of wines in the vintage, it's going to evolve gracefully for 20-25 years or more."
|California||CADE||Cabernet Sauvignon Estate||2018||95||Jeb Dunnuck|
"The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate comes all from the estate on Howell Mountain and is 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Malbec, and the balance Merlot and Petit Verdot. More blue fruits, bay leaf, candied violets, orange blossom, and floral notes emerge from this full-bodied beauty, which reveals a rounded, sexy texture, polished tannins, and a great finish. Give bottles just a few years in the cellar and it's going to keep for 15+."
|California||Grgich Hills||Fume Blanc Napa Valley||2019||91||James Suckling|
"A medium-bodied, crisp and fruity white with classic aromas and flavors of fresh grapefruit, guava, passion fruit and bell pepper. Flavorful. From organically grown grapes. Drink now."
|California||Grgich Hills||Chardonnay Napa Valley||2018||92||James Suckling|
"Aromas of honeysuckle, nectarine, crushed stones and toasted hazelnut. Hint of white pepper. It’s full-bodied and creamy with crisp acidity. Dense and concentrated with a toasty, flinty finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold."
