The event is very much family and town oriented. There were dozens of booths set up with items for sale, information booths, EMS, Fire, and Police. Educational booths, school supplies, etc. It is organized by the Hubbardston Lions Club (HLC) and the club determines whether booths are free or whether they pay a nominal charge to the HLC. The HLC had their food trailer set up with hamburgers, hot dogs, and refreshments for sale. There was also a chicken B-B-Q dinner served to local patrons and families. They prepared about 150 dinners and the public was able to eat their refreshments, snacks, and dinners under the beautiful new Pavilion that the HLC has built. The wooden roof was up, but final metal roof had not yet arrived. The Pavilion will be completed by the end of the month so that the HLC can formally donate it to the Town of Hubbardston on October 1. Although quite windy with a threat of rain, inclement weather held off and the day was a great success. The HLC has a history of doing good deeds within their town and the pavilion that they are completing will be another monument to the goodwill created by the HLC. I met with close to 2 dozen members of the HLC in the course of my visit. I scheduled this visit with the club President last month. Unfortunately the President had family issues that caused him not to attend. There were 2 members of the Phillipston Lions Club present and 3 "associate members" present. Actually, these 3 associate members are from the Orange Lions Club. Having attended several of the Phillipston Lions Clubs dinners, lunches, and breakfasts, it is obvious that there is a strong connection between the Phillipston and Orange Lions Clubs. They are both very small clubs, but they clearly help each other out. There was no formal opening and we spent about 1+1/2 hours in what can best be called an "open round-table discussion". All person in attendance wore Lions pins and we discussed a wide range of topics. One of the Phillipston Lions Signature events is a monthly breakfast, lunch, or dinner. They have a flyer that announces their monthly meal and it has regularly appeared in the District 33A newsletter. Moving forward, they will probably do away with the lunches and provide either breakfasts and dinners. We discussed their annual BBQ grill raffle, their upcoming chicken dinner, dues, and other issues. Whereas this was more of a casual meeting, we manage to discuss a wide range of topics into our discussion. They annually hold a local toll booth. Marilyn Holway and the Phillipston Club are very involved in the environmental photo contest, as well as the Peace Poster Contest. Marilyn had a lot to say about the All-State Band which she is very involved with. She was very concerned with the lack of direction and the lack of support from the Multiple District Council. I do not understand all of the details, but final decisions relating to The All-State Band were made very late in the process and did not leave much time to achieve its goals. Ultimately a band was created, and it did manage to perform in Boston at the LCICON in Boston in July. I made sure to bring up the annual Humanitarian Award and asked them to consider making an annual pledge to the fund. I reminded them that they should take every opportunity to let the world know what they are doing through either press releases and/or word-of-mouth. There was also some discussion relating to a District or Zone meeting in the future. I asked Marilyn Holway to look into using the Red Apple Farm for such a meeting in the spring (Aprilish). I will contact Zone 7 chair, Joni LaPlante to see if she is interested. The club has managed to do good works and deeds within their community even throughout the Covid/Pandemic years. They have done a lot of work getting free meals to seniors in their community. Last year, they managed to make and deliver full meals to 35+ seniors and they hope to do something similar for Thanksgiving this year. These were complete meals including dessert. They help the seniors by working with the local Council on Aging, thee local minister, and word of mouth. They also associate themselves with meals for Franklin County along with help from the local food bank which has supplied them with food. As an MLERF Director, I presented the Club with a citation from MLERF for their donations to MLERF last year. I also presented the club with the latest literature put out by MLERF. As I stated earlier, it was an unusual meeting because of its casual nature, but I feel that a tremendous amount was accomplished. It is an annual event held in the Town of Westminster that encourages everyone in the community to get involved and to do good deeds within the local community. It is run by a local 501 (c) 3 called "Neighbors Helping Neighbors". It is a Westminster all-volunteer organization that raises private funds to benefit the Town of Westminster. The annual event was held in a local park which was filled with booths, fun activities, fund-raising events, raffles, informational tables, local businesses, air fun rooms and inflatables, etc. The Westminster Lions Club had the District 33A Sightmobile on site and were offering free blood pressure, diabetes, and eye screenings to the public. We saw a few screenings and were screened ourselves. My wife and I attended through the advertising of the event by the Westminster Club. The Westminster Club is very active within their community and holds a monthly pankake breakfast to benefit a different community group each month. We sat around and watched a few screenings and talked with several local Lions. Barre Lions Club), Orange LIon Club member, | The Athol Lions Club (ALC) meets twice a month with the first meeting being a Board of Directors meeting. The 2nd meeting is with all members and action is taken based on the BOD meeting. There were a total of 31 people present This meeting did not have a single focus and covered a wide variety of topics, activities, and events. There was a Secretary's Report and a Treasurer's Report. The Peace Poster Contest was discussed. The Hubbardston Halloween Walk was discussed due to their involvement and due to the fact that their Halloween events have been cancelled for this year (to be discussed below) Due to the likelihood of rain, the Hubbardston Walk was postponed until the following weekend. There was a break for dinner. After dinner, there was considerable discussion relating to their Halloween Hayride which was cancelled by local authorities due to an incident on the second ride of the evening. This is a big money-making event for the ALC and there was much invested in the event. There are no final determinations and the incident is under investigation. There were some minor injuries but, all seems okay. On the positive side, The "weenie wagon" sold out and did very well. Some people received refunds; some let the ALC keep the monies. All in all, it was a challenging event for the club. A local attorney established a "Go Fund Me" page hoping to raise $5,000. The fund has already received almost $3,500 and it appears that the $5,000 goal will be reached. This shows the respect that Athol residents have for their local club. Their is a lot of support and appreciation for the ALC. I spoke to the club regarding my role as their Zone Chair. I complimented them on the good work that they are doing. I highlighted some of the areas of interest including their support of DG Curt's administration. I mentioned that support is needed to keep the Humanitarian Award program going. I mentioned the importance of the "Directory" and how to call if any help is needed. I mentioned the ROAR Program as well as the Advisory meetings. New members are always desired and need some guidance when they first become Lions. I also gave dates and encouraged attendance at the Mid-Winter Conference in Feb. Whereas I am a Director of MLERF, I reminded them of the good works being done by MLERF and I presented the Club President with a certificate from MLERF for their contributions last year. The ALC is a dynamic club that is doing great work within its community. They are working on their infamous "River Rat Race" for 2024. They recently had a White Cane Day to give residents a feel for what it is like to have loss of vision or low vision. On Dec. 2, they will do their Annual "Ringing of The Bells" where ALC members stand in for the Salvation Army and help them out. There was also discussion of a Christmas Party for Children, The ALC's annual Holiday Bazaar, and a Christmas Party for the adults. I sense that the ALC seems happy with the direction they are heading in. They are a dynamic club that is doing great deeds within their community. President Kellianne Iacaboni started the meeting by introducing the DG, CST, and Zone Chair. The meeting was called to order at 7:30. all guests were introduced and recognized and the club went right into its normal order of business. The Secretary's report was approved after a couple of corrections. The Secretary's Report was read by Lion Steve Smith. There was discussion relating to the clubs Annual budget and a list of annual donations made by the club. The Hubbardston Club does an annual budget and votes on it at its regular business meeting in January. The Club received a request from the Town of Gardner's Project HOPE and after discussion, the club made a donation to this local charitable organization. The Hubbardston Club had a very busy summer as they completed work on the large Pavilion that they designed, built, and donated to the Town of Hubbardston. The Hubbardston Lion Club (HLC) also has a Food Truck/Trailer that they use to sell refreshments at activities throughout the year. The Food Truck Crew were thanked by Lion Alice Livdahl. Their most recent activities included the Field Day in September, The Donating of the Pavilion, The Halloween Walk, and Trick-Or-Treating. The HLC discussed and pledged support for the Hubbardston Police Dept.'s Community Outreach Program. The program offers year-round Community Assistance and the club's gift was substantial. There was much discussion relating to their fall events and fundraisers. Details are not included here, but the HLC seems to do a tremendous amount of fundraising and community service and seemed to do a good job of looking back at what they have done and critiquing what they have done. They certainly brought up the idea that they need to get some of the younger members more involved so that they can continue to do their good works. After regular business was concluded, I was recognized as Zone Chair. I shared with the HLC some of the duties of the Zone Chair and let them know that help was only a phone call or an e-mail away. I reminded the Club of the Mid-Winter Conference in February and encouraged their attendance. Lastly, I spoke about The Mass. Lions Eye Research Fund (MLERF) and my role as Director for MLERF. I thanked them for their substantial donation in 2022-23. In a surprise move Lion Rich Clapham made a motion for a large donation to MLERF for 2023-24 that carried VDG/CST Denise spoke about the District 33A Humanitarian Award and there was club discussion of nominating someone. DG Curt spoke about his role as District Governor, The ROAR Program, and other District info. He finished up by congratulating the HLC on their Pavilion Project and mentioned the idea of supporting LCI and its initiatives because they are always there to help local clubs out. As a postscript is is important to remember that DG Curt's advice to the HLC was instrumental in helping the club get a grant to purchase permanent tables for the Pavilion. | The meeting concluded with a brief discussion and reminder of next month's meeting which will be the Club's Holiday Dinner at Hartman's Herb Farm in Barre on Weds.
