This training gives great ideas for connecting with teenage students specially during the beginning of the school year. Very practical tips.

YesYou are both excellent presenters. Thank you for making a long day feel shortSome awkward moments with my 9:00 partnerI hope these tools help me build community within my classes. I’m the only German teacher, so I teach most kids for 3-4 years and it’s so important to form a family
08/10/2018 12:19:58NoLoved the practical strategies that were shared - the circle games/activities, side by side activity with compliments, etc. l also loved the fact that the “why” was discussed.

I really appreciate the values throw training and program stand for. This is the most important part of life - and our job - and knowing these values are being reminded to us and reinforced makes this job and experience even more meaningful.
Thanks for a great day!

YesThis totally hit home for me. I’ve done Mike Smith Live training with Jostens Renaissance, and this reminded me a lot of it. I loved everything you shared, and would even like to incorporate this in my home life with my students.I would lovd a copy of the letter the first year teacher wrote to her kids and I would love a copy of the ten proactive expectations.

YesLots of great ideas that can be easily applied to the classroom without supplies/planning/etc.I wish I had a Make Kindness Normal tee like Houston’s

NoExperiencing the rope activity and being able to stand up and be silly. Concrete strategies to implement the kindness I want to exhibit to my students, but I just wasn’t sure how. I appreciated that we had 2 speakers to provide variety and the PowerPoint was not too complicated, but provided simple ideas.I really can’t think of any! And I’m trying!I wish I could have had it earlier in my career.Absolutely.

YesI give you both a big thumbs up. Nice speakers and I’m guessing very nice people.Wondering joy you left teaching.
08/10/2018 12:21:18Staci RobersonNoI really liked the activities we did in the training. I usually hate getting up at trainings but your activities were fun so I actually think they would translate well to the classroom.
This training was very inspirational. It reminded me that I didn’t get into teaching to teach facts but to positively affect the future through my students. Thanks for that.
08/10/2018 12:21:19NoIt was a good balance of implementation strategies and pulling of heart strings.A lot of people made it a little difficult to fully get the impact of some of the strategies.
Character Strong has done the research to find the missing piece to our society. It is not difficult just things that have been forgotten as society has changed and need to be intentionally implemented again.
08/10/2018 12:21:26
YesThe reminders of how to be a better person as an individual before being the teacher. By being a better person, the mentality and traits begin to show in he every day lives, which then shows in the classroom.
I think this is a great reminder for people to be better people and to help reconnect with others and the passion they have in their profession, whatever it may be. Adults complain about kids not knowing how to be social, having certain skills, politeness, ect, but those skills are not taught in school. If not now (with Character Strong), then when?

YesThe times that it forced us to reflect and be vulnerable. Some of the activities that were the 5 pound compliments stuff were awkward. The shallower stuff wasn’t as interesting to me. I like to go deep.Wish more schools in our district did Character Strong.

YesGrand slam!!! Best inservice I have ever been apart of! Super revealing and vulnerable and the word that comes to mind is poetic! The way you two presented was engaging, real and applicable! Very big thanks for this!!!Nothing, it was great! How do I become trained to present?? How do I become better schooled to implement this for my classroom and teams? Are there more work shops?Absolutely!
I look forward to sending you periodical pieces of feedback.

YesI loved all the Clock Partner activities. I learned a lot about how I could do more as an educator to connect with my students. Both presenters spoke on a level that I could I understand and used examples from their real life that really hit home. I think this was an excellent training. The only thing I could say is that I would of loved for them to add more activities - like role playing to help speak the tools we learn. This might sound silly but I would of loved for it to be longer!
Wow! Both presenters spoke on a level that I could I understand and used examples from their real life that really hit home. I think this was an excellent training. I recommend this to anyone who works with students.

NoInteractive and naturalLong 😊That I got it last year 😊
I teach Math and Character Strong seemed a stretch for my world. I incorporated writing positive emails to parents last year. Every single email was met with gratitude, emotional thank yous and surprise.
At the end of the year, I felt like this was the single most effective way to send a student off knowing what they did right so they can keep doing it.

YesThe explanations about why character development needs to happen, especially in today's climate.I wish that you had incorporated the act of kindness example with the school that cleaned up the football field. That was powerful!
The work that you are doing to bring relational training to schools is beyond important in today's world. I am thankful that not only will I be able to be part of this movement, but that my own children will be experiencing it at BDJH and SLHS.
08/10/2018 12:23:04Kayce Davis
YesGreat strategies, great videos, great quotes, excellent pacing.
I struggle with genuinely getting to know kids. I scratch the surface of getting to know them, but need help or strategies to go deeper with relationship building in my classroom and keep it up all school year.
08/10/2018 12:23:05Karl BurfordNoThe training sold me on the need to teach character to our students. It struck me that character strong activities or actions need to occur everyday.

YesSweet grittinessOther teachers on their phones during the training. :-(Loved it.
08/10/2018 12:23:07Dan CarpenterNoThe core idea/conceptThe pen activity. It doesn’t really serve its purpose, but it did take my pen. It’s a little too long. Condense it down, it will strengthen the message.
As far as large scale training goes, it’s pretty good; better than most.
08/10/2018 12:23:09
YesThis has been the best training I have attended in 10 years of teaching. Our job is to not only teach but nurture our students. We need more kindness in the world and this program is great.None, both presenters were engaging and well spokenTo have it at the beginning of every year to start the year off on a positive note!

YesIt was awesome! As a Christian that worked first with youth groups for 20 years, when I started teaching so many of what you are delivering is what we taught! Our world today, needs what you are teaching in the secular world! Great job!
08/10/2018 12:23:10Opportunities to practice strategiesMore breaks for brainstorming & self-reflection on how to incorporate into my classBe more comfortable implementing strategies and persuading kids to “buy in”
08/10/2018 12:23:11NoRope activity was a lot of fun! I like that two people traded off presenting - makes it easier to pay attention. Appears that the lessons will be easy to access and implement. Humor by presenters was definitely appreciated!
I noticed when we did the face to face/ back to back activity the men in our group we’re not very comfortable. I wonder if teen boys will be the same way???

I came in this morning thinking it would be a waste of time, but I was so wrong. It was such a great experience and you guys are awesome.
08/10/2018 12:23:15Lacey Moore
NoYou guys were amazing! I think a lot of teachers need the reminder that we could be the only positive influence or interaction in our students’ lives.Too much sharing with partners.
08/10/2018 12:23:16Great provisions for teaching characterNot much honestlyI wish that this training would be done for the PTA’s of our schools. Education is completed between parents, students, and educators. We should use this program to help bridge that.

YesSo many... that my entire campus could be here 🙌🏼... I am blessed to teach a character curriculum every day/ every class period - before this training I believe most of my faculty believed character learning is a “nice idea” but now they know it’s “The Plate.” Thank you for your genuine enthusiasm, vulnerability & practical application.More of it!!!
Sure - what I said on the “hits” - well done, Character Strong friends.
08/10/2018 12:24:20
YesThis was a great experience. I needed to hear that it’s inportant and necessary for character development to be a priority.NoneI hope that all the teachers will buy in. Fingers crossed.Houston-how is your mom?

Houston and John were great. They believe in this curriculum and have great ideas on how to improve your school’s climate and culture.

YesReally helps give practical methods I can use in my room.
Got even my grumpy co workers participating
This was truly amazing
Nothing I just wish there would be follow up training like short training every few months to check in
Of course. I use similar methods in my class. My dad used to give me lessons like this as a child. Sadly he died of colon cancer young, he did make it 8 years with it though (I hope the best for your mom Houston) but I use his lessons and your training has given me better ways to use them.
The students need and enjoy these lessons when the teacher shows their enjoyment for the lessons.
08/10/2018 12:24:38
NoExcellent job of showing why we do this. Providing active strategies really helped in building competence, as wellNothing to add here. I really enjoyed the learning.I wish we had more reflection time to literally add this to our lesson plan. I have been able to meld this into my first week plan and my semester framework. I fear others have not. I would like to see more of a push for commitment.
Time spent developing relationships is worth the time. It doesnt take away from your curriculum, it adds to it.
08/10/2018 12:25:08Mike Demarchi
YesI enjoyed not just the message, but I really appreciate the main ideas being put into words for me. I knew that character was important, but now I can really communicate it to my students better.Sweet Lord, stop making high school teachers get up and do ice breakers with strangers over and over. That is so uncomfortable for most and turns people off to your awesome message.
08/10/2018 12:25:11NoI really likes the activity with the large tether. I will probably try and use it in a way to not only have the kids get through to each other but also use it as a review tool in class.
We did character strong last year on our campus and wasn’t fully bought in. I wasn’t bought in because the program wasn’t clarified better on what it was all about. Now I have a better understanding.

YesWhy it is important to connect with my students. Tools how to do this.Actually thought it was very goodThat more people would actually take this more seriously.
This training is one of the best I have been through. I believe if a school would actually buy into this program it can change the entire culture of any school. It starts with us, the teachers to be the examples.
08/10/2018 12:25:55Matt Hoelscher
YesOrganized, fun and interactive. Good examples of things we could utilize in the classroom that are affective and don’t take up a lot of instruction time.More examples of how this is specifically implemented in class. What are other teachers approaches to using this. All good
Very important stuff for today’s educators. A key component of personal development t hat largely gets ignored in many places.

YesEverything. Absolutely everything. This was the best training I have been to in a while and definitely kept me engaged and had me reevaluating my idea of relationships with my students.Nothing.I started a Kindness Challenge with my students after Hurricane Harvey and am going to roll these two concepts in to one.
Dear fellow teachers,

I know you brought your laptop in hopes of getting work done while sitting in the back of the meeting room or cards to cut out, but put those down. I have been awakened as a teacher and feel like I have a whole new outlook on what my class is going to look like this year. My "plate" will NOT be broken and it will be full of kindness.
You are amazing and I wish I had your job! Thank you for an amazing lesson!
08/10/2018 12:26:14Clark Saunders
YesIt's all relevant! Relationships are the key parts to life, including education. Our schools & world would be a much better place if we would put into practice all that has been covered.None that come to mind.I know you mentioned the college student video for the future. I think a video of students discussing the importance of this material in their life would be powerful. Current HS or College Students.
Not at the moment, but if I have a testimony through this I will gladly share in the future.
Thanks for sharing your day with us!
08/10/2018 12:26:31YesThe relatable and demonstrable processes were positive and constructive. You made me feel, like yes I can do this! This needs to be a priority in the classroom. We have a saying that to become a better athlete you must become a better person first. This idea applies very much to the hyper competitive classroom and community we live in as well. Character Strong is vital our students GHI (gross happiness index).NoneNothing beyond I wish I was able to attend the whole session.

Simple, pragmatic tools
Loved that is was very dynamic.
Sometimes it was a bit fast when it came down to the main points.
I really loved it and learned a lot. Last year was my first year teaching and it was all about getting the academics through. Today you reminded me the reasons why I decided to become a teacher this late in my live.
Thank you!!!
08/10/2018 12:28:11Jami Ouellette
YesI loved every part of this! I wish we would have had this training BEFORE we did any of the character strong modules last year. I didn’t like them and the kids didn’t either. Having this grainy first would have made the modules make so much more sense. Your training to this has made me see how I interact with my students so much differently. Thank you, thank you! I’m thinking this is what I have been needing. Thank you 😍

YesActivities, engagement and caring. Using heart, head, heart. Very similiar to the nurse’s strategies - I encourage and demonstrate character importance- empathy, honesty, respect and being compassionate, my students and respect each one of them. It is an honor to have them in my class 😊None
Thanks, I enjoyed, engaged and learned much. Being honest with my students is extremely important as it is in healthcare.
08/10/2018 12:30:37
I would love for our school (Seven Lakes High School) to give us access to the Character Strong website. I'd love to watch the videos of how the presenters facilitate the lessons. Currently, SLHS teachers are given a PowerPoint of the lesson, usually sent a few days before the lesson, and that's all we're provided with I LOVE the lessons, and want to do an AMAZING job presenting it; I feel like access to all of the materials could definitely help take my presentation up a few notches. Thanks for coming! "Consistency and competence without clarity equates to busy life without passion." That struck a chord with me. That IS our community. We need clarity!!!

YesCompliment strategies
Purpose letter
I don’t question the value of raising kindness levels and improving relationships between people who spend a lot of time together; in any setting those things are their own rewards. However, I sort of wish that our administrators would concede that we play a part in creating the distress that students experience with excessive academic loads. There’s nothing wrong with helping them to endure this stress by improving the environment, but we could also do more to prevent the stress in the first place.
Yes. If you’re a teacher who’s shy or not the most organized, but you want to improve kindness and relationships, these guys and their methods can help.
08/10/2018 12:56:23NoCharacter traits to be aware of.

Training activities wher fun and at times hard but in a good and helpful way.

NoI enjoyed the training overall. A few slow places. I think the circle activities were really good. We didn't have access to the website last year. I hope we do this year as I think I would use many of your ideas. Being brutally honest, I liked the "older" presenter a bit more than the younger one who kept saying "alright, alright." He's not Matthew McConaughe. His opening story with the women and the airport sounded fabricated. I had a similar experience myself but the one he described sounded contrived. My story: I was teaching at a school where we could receive outside phone calls. My dad had been hospitalized and he was dying. I was in TX, he was on the East coast. My classroom phone rang - no cell phones then - it was the hospital. My dad was being moved to hospice and only had hours left. I literally ran out of my classroom and drove home. Husband arranged a flight and I packed. Drove to the airport. I cried the whole way there - softly. I sat next to the window and looked at the clouds wondering if my dad would be alive when I got there. The woman next to me was a nurse. She was very kind and tried to console me. Don't know her name or anything else, but I'll never forget her small act of kindness. I'm sure this story is similar to many who have experienced the same type of flight. I arrived close to midnight - my dad was in a coma but I did get to hold his hand and tell him goodbye. He died the next day at 9 am.The pen activity for me was a bust. Did not complete the last clock partnering.Perhaps a more "professional" approach - your two grown relatable but not super cool.Perhaps.
I'd be interested in buying a t-shirt if they are availble.
