He learned as much from American television & movies as the Catholic schools he attended. With 12 years of said Catholic education in him, he has internalized a wealth of shame and guilt that developed into a wry sense of humor. He attended the University of Texas twice - once for a Bachelors in Advertising and the second for a Masters in Advertising, but this time, he picked up a Minor in Screenwriting, too. He began writing teleplays and after realizing he was in danger of suddenly waking up 50 years old in his childhood room and still under his parents’ roof, he moved to LA and has been a Copywriter for the last 8.5 years. He’s worked for Fortune 500 companies like McDonald’s and other brands like Lexus, SoCal Edison, Shiseido, Nielsen and more. After surviving bouts of depression, he began to remember his traumatic experiences and explore his mental health issues that stemmed from loneliness, an Asian-American identity crisis, and family detachment. Raised as an only child by a single mom, I Love Lucy, Jerry Lewis, Doris Day, and Bruce Lee movies kept me company. I spent Saturday mornings watching PBS cooking shows with my grandmother. I adopted a love of cooking from her, which then transpired to an obsessive hobby of mixology. My grand childhood dream was to be an artist, which initially lead me to path of studying graphic design and then cinematography. However, those dreams derailed when my mom was diagnosed with late-onset schizophrenia shortly after my college graduation. Imposed with the Asian expectations of a daughter, my role changed to “parent” just as I was barely learning to be an adult. As our sole provider, I took a “real” job in the software industry, assisting in sales and human resources. After years of maneuvering the mental health system, I gained legal conservatorship over my mom. It was not until after then, that I began to pursue TV writing. I earned a TV writing certificate in half-hour comedy from UCLA extension while working full-time. I am currently in development on a 1-hour dramedy based on my own life—a deal I landed while working as a legal assistant. I’ve also trained two years in capoeira and know how to play the berimbau very badly. (Source: WGA Profile) | Aug. 31, 2020 | ||||||||||
