A BRIEF ORIENTATION: LEARNING JAPANESE WITH SUBS2SRS
3
4
What is Subs2SRS?
5
The name is a contraction of "Subtitles to spaced repetition systems." "Spaced repetition" is a buzzphrase for software that gradually quizzes you less and less often on content that you remember correctly, and more and more often on content that slips your mind. Plainly, then, Subs2SRS is a software that converts videos and subtitles files into a deck of flash cards for studying. Many such decks have already been shared by the community.
6
Why use these decks?
7
Because they're free, and they help you to learn from shows that interest you.
8
Is this suitable for day-one beginners?
9
Frankly, no. How much Japanese you need is an eternal topic of argument, but in general they're a tool for late beginners and intermediates. Knowledge of kana is mandatory. With less than a few hundred known words and a couple hundred known kanji it will probably be too frustrating, but your tolerances may vary.
10
Are there recommended resources for reaching that point?
11
Not in particular. Free content for beginners is common, just pick something that feels right and get your feet wet.
If you insist, I defer to Jo Mako's beginner Anki decks. The first few steps on the "How to Use Decks" tab below will walk you through installing Anki, then just open a profile and import his decks with the "Import File" button near the bottom.

Aren't the instructions a little... long?
13
Don't be intimidated. The process isn't that arcane, I merely strove to make it crystal clear.
