Geers, DuLaney take victories

Known for its difficult terrain, the most-misspelled event in the series, the Hashawha 2.85M trail run, had an unusually comfortable temperature and low humidity for the second straight year. Still, it seems like an extra hill is added each year, though the course hasn't changed in several years. 129 people and one dog completed the event together.

Heidi Tompkins must have had Stephanie Geers in sight at the finish, but was not close enough for a late challenge to Stephanie's overall win for the women. Tonna Arbaugh was first masters, taking third overall to boot. 16 year-old Erin McGrath was her age-group winner as she kept Tonna in sight. Paula Smith enjoyed her new age-group by winning 50-59. Karen Gue in 30-39 was our next age-group winner to finish. 11 year-old Lyla Goffena was first 15 & under, notably ahead of her sister Rubie, who had won that age-group (and overall female) at last week's Jim Myers Owl 2-Mile Track Run. Nancy Willis got a measure of revenge by reversing last year's finish order with Chris Reese for 60-69. Jeanette Novak returned again to triumph as the only 70-79 for either gender.

The men's field was more crowded towards the front, with 12 finishing under 20 minutes, compared to just 5 last year. Brendan DuLaney improved by an impressive 1:19 to vault to a first place finish in 18:09. Ryan Taylor improved his time a bit, but finished second again this year. He must have been out of the woods at about the time to see Brendan cross the finish line. At about the same separation behind Ryan was Peter Merkel, who hung on to third place despite Colin Russell, Chris Scalzi, Steve Kartalia and Will Greene all being within 10 seconds. Colin and Chris repeated as the 30-39 and 16-19 winners, respectively, while Steve dominated the 50-59 category. Charlie Ferguson finished in the top-ten to repeat last year's 15 & under win. Tom Yinger continued our string of repeat age-group winners, comfortably ahead in the 40-49 group. A bit further down the results, Tom Smith held off Paul Kelly for 60-69, despite being in his final year in that group. Dario Lavelle, a veteran runner at age 7, was our youngest competitor.

Race director Gary Honeman put together a well-marked course that was in excellent condition this year. Joe Loveland brought the race equipment. Series directors Chris Reese and Liuda Galinaitis handled registration. The finish line was staffed by Tim Gosnell (timing), Bob Sommerville, Jen Goffena, Lily Hill and Jon Hill. Their work was instrumental in producing fast and accurate (I believe) results. We had a videographer as well Joe Burke. Karsten Brown was at the start and out on the course adding his usual quality photographs. Hopefully they all got to enjoy a Popsicle like the runners did.

Next up in two weeks is the Run with the Knights 5K at Century High School. This year, with the Track
Run being unscored, one's best four of the five remaining events will be used to score for the series. All six events, running or volunteering, can be counted towards the four needed for the series premium.
