EcoActuary: Investment Planner-UK can be used to assess the scale of NFM investment necessary to make a difference
How it works: Environment Agency flow data is used to calculate the water volume represented by the rising limb of a flood hydrograph. The maximum of this volume (the largest flood) peak over the observation period is assumed to be volume required for 100% mitigation. The user enters what proportion of this volume (flood peak) they wish to mitigate and the tool calculates the volume of storage that NFM must hold back to achieve that mitigation. Since the EA timeseries used are short, the difference between mean stage and highest observed stage at the nearest stage gauge is used to calculate a multiplier that better represents the longer term maximum flow. Users can enter the per unit volume cost of different NFM techniques and the tool will estimate the budget required to mitigate at the level required. EIP takes no account of how the placement of NFM in specific catchment positons can make a difference: a spatial model like EcoActuary is necessary for that. This tool uses data supplied by UK EA through DEFRA opendata.
