"Library & Information Services" BannerUsers do not readily distinguish or understand the four main sections we designated for the site--they see all pages as "Library" pages or "LIS" pages, depending on their bias. For example, when four people saw the page header "Library & Information Services," they thought they were on the library page. When two people were on the library page, they thought they were on the LIS page. Even student LIS employees do not necessarily know what LIS stands for!Create unique Banner titles for each section of the site (Library, LIS, Technology, Curricular Technology). Also, enlarge links to library and helpdesk in the opening paragraph on the LIS page.Highfaculty, staff, studentsxxxx
3
General LIS Website structure and organizationWhen faculty & staff need assistance, they prefer calling people they know, and they expect layout and site structure to be easily navigable. Conversely, students were much more likely to use "search" thus layout is less important to them.If your audience is primarily faculty and staff, you need to structure your pages more carefully via navigation and menus. Even if you do though, you can expect some faculty will simply pick up the phone to call the staff member they already know. If your primary audience is students, you need to ensure your important content can be found by the most common search terms.Highfaculty, staff, studentsxxxxxx
4
LIS directory (http://www.middlebury.edu/offices/technology/lis/about/directory)If you don't know the name of the person you're looking for (eg, if you're looking for the Dean of LIS, or for a librarian), the directory is not very helpful. Display job titles in directory (esp. long titles like MR's); add tags like Dean of LIS so this can be found via searchHighfaculty, staff, studentsx
5
Helpdesk left-nav menuThere was a general lack of understanding of what some of the categories in the left nav meant ("I need to find...", "What can we help you with", and "Help Portals"); people clicked on each in succession just to see what they contained, but still didn't find what they needed.Change names? A few suggestions: "I need to find" could become "Quick Links". "What can we help you with" could become "Media Support and Equipment". "Help Portals" could become "Help for..." then narrow down by students/faculty/staff/guest.Highfaculty, staff, studentsx
6
Tech workshop schedule / Events scheduled in the Library / CTLR Peer writing tutor scheduleTech workshops are difficult to find--only found using search. Can't find events scheduled in the library on the library page. CTLR doesn't have peer writing tutor schedule.Specific areas of the site (e.g. Library, Helpdesk, CTLR) should add feeds from 25Live on homepages for relevant events and workshops (e.g. Helpdesk adds 25Live feed for technology workshops to homepage. CTLR adds 25Live feed for peer writing tutor schedule to homepage/other page).Highfaculty, staff, studentsxxxxCTLR
7
Go linksUsers are pleased with Go links and the ability to add their own when they discover how they workWe should advertise/publicize this more, and make sure everyone in LIS knows about themHighstudents, faculty, staffGo links
8
Word choicePeople sometimes don't know what terms to search for. E.g. "borrowing" or "front desk" or "circulation desk"; "external access" or "off-campus access"; "acquisitions" or "purchase requests".Tag cloud on midd search results page would be helpful.Medium-Highstudents, faculty
9
go/lis4facultyOnce faculty have found lis4faculty, they use it repeatedly. Staff too.Publicize it more. Link to it from more places (Curricular Technology page, etc.)Medium-Highfaculty, staffxxxx
10
Journal articlesWhen most students need journal articles, they don't look for journal databases or research guides. They use Journals A-Z unless they are familiar with a particular database like Proquest or JSTOR.Wait for Summon (or something like it) and make that available in Quick Search box.Medium-Highstudentsx
11
ADA servicesInfo. exists in Work & Meeting Spaces wiki page, but users do not always find it. Several expected to find it under "Visiting our Libraries."Add link to Visiting our Libraries page on LIS page. Add Visiting our Libraries to Library page.Medium-Highstudentsxx
12
LIS Wiki and LIS BlogUsers sometimes knew they should look here for answers in the wiki but didn't know how to get to it from our pages. Add links to LIS Wiki and LIS Blog on on LIS page. We could do a better job of educating users about what kind of info. the wiki and blog contain (several thought the wiki was for "help pages" or helpdesk staff only. This will probably fade as time goes on.)Medium-Highstudents, staff, facultyxxx
13
General observationsPeople think the site is visually pleasing ("pretty", "better", and "visually pleasing") whether or not they can find what they need.Positive feedback; excellent!Medium-Highstudents, faculty, staffxxxx
14
"Library Quick Search" portalIt's invisible to users even when they're looking for MIDCAT. Make it more noticeable. See what Drexel (Drupal) has done: http://www.library.drexel.edu/Mediumfaculty, studentsx
15
Hardware assistanceMost users know to call x2200. Did not find help on site--several clicked on FAQs."What can we help you with?" leads to too few categories - add "hardware issues", "software issues" etc. to guide users. Mediumstaffx
16
LIS wikiDense with textDivide long pages into separate content? Also would need to be sure related pages are linked and categories are consistently applied.Mediumfaculty, studentx
17
Banner IDNo one can find info on getting a Banner ID. Some people look for it on the HelpDesk page, but it's not there. Some would call the HelpDesk. They don't notice it in the "Tech" quicklinks.Add this link (http://www.middlebury.edu/offices/technology/banner) to helpdesk page?Mediumfacultyx
18
Course web pagesStudents either know go/segue or look for course web pages on academic department sites/course catalog listings.Add links to course web pages to academic department sites and course catalog listings (enable dept coordinators/professors to do the latter). Have one page with all course websites listed and linked, regardless of platform. Mediumstudentsacademic departmentsites
19
My MIDCATStudents and faculty think everything that is checked out can be seen in MIDCATAdd link on My MIDCAT login page to check status of ILL materials; perhaps also clarify what My MIDCAT can do (i.e. renew, view checked out items, etc.)Mediumfaculty, students
20
go/softwarePeople who wanted to know where they could find PhotoShop looked here (http://www.middlebury.edu/offices/technology/ct/tools) and here (http://www.middlebury.edu/offices/technology/help/ProdSupportPage).Add a go/software link to CT page. Make go/software link on helpdesk page more visible (they scroll right past it). Add it to LIS Wiki ("Work and Meeting Spaces") too.Mediumfaculty, staffxxx
21
File backups / MiddfilesStudents can't find through menus or through searchAdd tags to content about middfiles and back-ups in Drupal (back-up, middfiles, etc.). Create go/backup link that goes here (https://mediawiki.middlebury.edu/wiki/LIS/File_Servers#Connecting_to_File_Servers), too?Mediumstudentsx
22
Quick links to...Expect titles of columns in Quick Links to... (drop down menus) to be clickableChange behavior of Titles in columns of the quick links so the drop down menu is separate and the Title itself can be clicked. Make links stand out more when moused-over.Mediumstudents, facultyxxxx
23
Tag pagesUsers aren't sure what they are looking at when they click MiddTags. Several clicked the same tag multiple times and didn't understand why they weren't being taken to different pages.Clarify what is being displayed when users click a tag (e.g. "This is a list of website content that used the MiddTag" Helpdesk" or something like that?)Mediumstudents, staff, facultyxxxx
24
SearchingSome staff and faculty don't use search--probably due to bad past experiences (students are fine with it)Encourage faculty and staff to search the site now that the functionality is so much improvedLowfaculty, staffxxxxxx
25
Breadcrumb trailsTechnology and Help & Support breadcrumb trail redirect is confusingRemove redirector (currently from http://www.middlebury.edu/offices/technology to http://www.middlebury.edu/offices/technology/help). Create a disambiguation page at Technology pointing to LIS, and all pages listed in Tech Quick links to...Lowfaculty, staffhttp://www.middlebury.edu/offices/technology
26
Library Collections sectionSome people think that "Library Collections" will have advice on how to make a purchase request. Change the name.Lowfacultyx
27
Quick links to... (drop-downs)Some people seem to think that these are shortcuts to primary content on the site they're already at, not links to other LIS sites.Change the name from "Quick links to" to "LIS Navigation", and encourage all LIS sites to use the standard 4-column design for ease and consistency of navigationLowstudents, facultyxxxx
28
FormsForms that have intro. text (e.g. http://www.middlebury.edu/academics/lib/depts/main/collection_management/forms) Make the "Go to form" link larger and more obvious/move it above the MiddTags/make the heading/title of the form clickable.Lowstaffx
29
Course catalog"Course catalog is so much, so much better to look at! Having the descriptions under the course names is great."-Junior class student testerPositive feedback; excellent!LowCourse catalog
30
Page title search boxes for pages with subpage listFor example, on the Offices & Services page: Even with the text "Start typing a name to quickly search", it's not clear that this is NOT a regular Search Midd box.Rename "Start typing a name to quickly search" to something differentLow
