A world without summer : a volcano erupts, a creature awakens, and the sun goes out Nicholas Day“The word loud isn’t loud enough. The word hot isn’t hot enough. The word— / None of the words are enough.” Award-winner Day offers readers a rousing recitation of the catastrophes resulting from this “unfathomable” natural disaster after the millions of tons of ash and sulfates belched out by the volcano created a worldwide “climate shock.” The results included floods, fires, crop failures, violent storms, disease outbreaks, and upended seasons: “A Feedback Loop of Bad,” as one chapter heading puts it. He also draws sweeping but plausible connections to less direct but no less consequential events, including Mary Shelley’s contemporaneous Frankenstein—he sees the book’s “transfixing weirdness” as “a story straight out of the madness that Tambora made”—and the beginnings of mass westward population movements in the U.S. and the development of modern meteorology. Day includes reflection questions for readers in several places and points to Tambora as a cautionary tale of what we will all face, climate-wise, if we don’t heed the warning signs. We’re inescapably part of our planet’s story, and “we’re not the main character.” Short chapters, a breathless narrative style, and spacious typography contribute to this work’s accessibility. Final art not seen.

The wild robot on the islandPeter Brown What happens when a robot washes up alone on an island?

“Everything was just right on the island.” Brown beautifully re-creates the first days of Roz, the protagonist of his Wild Robot novels, as she adapts to living in the natural world. A storm-tossed ship, seen in the opening just before the title page, and a packing crate are the only other human-made objects to appear in this close-up look at the robot and her new home. Roz emerges from the crate, and her first thought as she sets off up a grassy hill—”This must be where I belong”—is sweetly glorious, a note of recognition rather than conquest. Roz learns to move, hide, and communicate like the creatures she meets. When she discovers an orphaned egg—and the gosling Brightbill, who eventually hatches—her decision to be his mother seems a natural extension of her adaptation. Once he flies south for the winter, her quiet wait across seasons for his return is a poignant portrayal of separation and change. Brown’s clean, precise lines and deep, light-filled colors offer a sense of what Roz might be seeing, suggesting a place that is alive yet deeply serene and radiant. Though the book stands alone, it adds an immensely appealing dimension to Roz’s world. Round thumbnails offer charming peeks into the island world, depicting Roz’s animal neighbors and Brightbill’s maturation.

War GamesAlan GratzIn his latest, prolific author Gratz takes on Hitler’s Olympic Games.

When 13-year-old American gymnast Evie Harris arrives in Berlin to compete in the 1936 Olympic Games, she has one goal: stardom. If she can bring home a gold medal like her friend, the famous equestrian-turned-Hollywood-star Mary Brooks, she might be able to lift her family out of their Dust Bowl poverty. But someone slips a strange note under Evie’s door, and soon she’s dodging Heinz Fischer, the Hitler Youth member assigned to host her, and meeting strangers who want to make use of her gymnastic skills—to rob a bank. As the games progress, Evie begins to see the moral issues behind their sparkling facade—the antisemitism and racism inherent in Nazi ideology and the way Hitler is using the competition to support and promote these beliefs. And she also agrees to rob the bank. Gratz goes big on the Mission Impossible–style heist, which takes center stage over the actual competitions, other than Jesse Owens’ famous long jump. A lengthy and detailed author’s note provides valuable historical context, including places where Gratz adapted the facts for storytelling purposes (although there’s no mention of the fact that before 1952, Olympic equestrian sports were limited to male military officers). With an emphasis on the plot, many of the characters feel defined primarily by how they’re suffering under the Nazis, such as the fictional diver Ursula Diop, who was involuntarily sterilized for being biracial.

Swim TeamJohnnie ChristmasLeaving Brooklyn behind, Black math-whiz and puzzle lover Bree starts a new life in Florida, where she’ll be tossed into the deep end in more ways than one. Keeping her head above water may be the trickiest puzzle yet.

While her dad is busy working and training in IT, Bree struggles at first to settle into Enith Brigitha Middle School, largely due to the school’s preoccupation with swimming—from the accomplishments of its namesake, a Black Olympian from Curaçao, to its near victory at the state swimming championships. But Bree can’t swim. To illustrate her anxiety around this fact, the graphic novel’s bright colors give way to gray thought bubbles with thick, darkened outlines expressing Bree’s deepest fears and doubts. This poignant visual crowds some panels just as anxious feelings can crowd the thoughts of otherwise star students like Bree. Ultimately, learning to swim turns out to be easy enough with the help of a kind older neighbor—a Black woman with a competitive swimming past of her own as well as a rich and bittersweet understanding of Black Americans’ relationship with swimming—who explains to Bree how racist obstacles of the past can become collective anxiety in the present. To her surprise, Bree, with her newfound water skills, eventually finds herself on the school’s swim team, navigating competition, her anxiety, and new, meaningful relationships.

Octopus ocean : geniuses of the deep Mark Leiren-YoungAll hail the weirdly alien cephalopods: dreamers, unsurpassed escape artists, and among the smartest creatures on the planet.

Noting that even as he was writing this book, researchers were continuing to make new discoveries about octopuses and their squid and cuttlefish cousins, Leiren-Young nonetheless forges ahead to introduce representative members of the cephalopod clan and to explore their distinctive qualities and capabilities. In addition to celebrating their vaunted ability to camouflage themselves and to escape from captivity (one Auckland overachiever, dubbed Rambo, even learned how to use a waterproof camera), he points to evidence that they are at least as smart as chimps and dolphins, that they may dream, and that, with fantastically sensitive sensors in their arms, they can tell if what they touch is “friend, foe or food” and even detect light and color. The author attempts to remain nonjudgmental about the consumption of octopuses; after all, he writes, “any animal that can eat an octopus will,” including other octopuses. Still, he emphasizes the controversy around farming them, and to counter anthropodenial (the assumption that animals don’t have emotions or intelligence), he urges readers to use gendered pronouns when thinking about them. From the giant Pacific octopus and a “squid squad” to a fingertip-size wolfi and the “adorable” dumbo, specimens undulate fetchingly across natural settings in the heavy suite of stock photos.

A long walk to water : a novel : based on a true storyLinda Sue Parks Salva Dut is 11 years old when war raging in the Sudan separates him from his family. To avoid the conflict, he walks for years with other refugees, seeking sanctuary and scarce food and water. Park simply yet convincingly depicts the chaos of war and an unforgiving landscape as they expose Salva to cruelties both natural and man-made. The lessons Salva remembers from his family keep him from despair during harsh times in refugee camps and enable him, as a young man, to begin a new life in America. As Salva’s story unfolds, readers also learn about another Sudanese youth, Nya, and how these two stories connect contributes to the satisfying conclusion. This story is told as fiction, but it is based on real-life experiences of one of the “Lost Boys” of the Sudan. Salva and Nya’s compelling voices lift their narrative out of the “issue” of the Sudanese War, and only occasionally does the explanation of necessary context intrude in the storytelling. Salva’s heroism and the truth that water is a source of both conflict and reconciliation receive equal, crystal-clear emphasis in this heartfelt account.8/29/20259/28/2025

The last unexplored place on earth : investigating the ocean floor with Alvin the submersibleAly BrownAtribute to the submersible Alvin, which has played an important role in undersea research for over a half century.

In its thousands of dives, the durable vessel, launched in 1964, has been attacked by swordfish, flooded and recovered, and used to search for a lost hydrogen bomb. Alvin has also carried scientists to uniquely remote edges of continental plates for first encounters with hydrothermal vents, explored the ruins of the Titanic and the devastation of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, and made possible the discovery of uncounted new species of deep-sea life. After setting the stage with properly arresting references to “creepy creatures with glowing tentacles and cruel fangs,” Brown retraces Alvin’s storied career with frequent references to oral histories and interviews with many pilots and passengers. Notably, she covers some of the women who had to shoulder their way past sexist practices and attitudes. While briefly addressing the general challenges of spending long hours at deadly depths in cramped quarters (with the nearest bathroom miles away), she offers vivid impressions of the exhilarating rewards: the excitement of plunging into the deep’s unexplored reaches, where any moment could bring some fresh new biological or geophysical discovery. And if the photos are small and sparse, sidebars include simple hands-on experiments and “Alvin Facts,” plus in-depth resource notes to compensate. “Pretty neat!” as the author puts it. Readers will agree.

Draculas Brunch ClubBrian GonsarIf there’s one thing that can bridge the human/undead divide, it’s donuts.
Upon returning from a successful “worldwide jelly donut tour,” Count Dracula, vampire and world-class baker, is outraged to learn that his human-inclusive brunch club has been overtaken by the towering, glowering vampire Constantine, who’s banned people. Worse, Dracula’s entire store of “the crimson-red, blood orange jelly all vampires crave” has been raided. Local farmers have no blood oranges—a blight has destroyed the crops. This proves disastrous even as Dracula tries to regain his brunch-hosting ground—kale is no substitute for delicious, energizing fruit jelly. The shortage also jeopardizes his standing with his crush, the human Elena, since he’s promised to donate a year’s supply of jelly donuts to her charity auction to help sick children. Something must be done—and it might just involve blood. After all, Count Dracula is a vampire. This book will greatly appeal to young readers looking for comics with a little edge: The gore is mild and cartoon-silly, and there are plenty of jokes to lighten the mood. The story moves at a measured pace, and the fun, kid-friendly artwork adds depth to the narrative. Gaybba’s color palette predominantly contains cool, moody tones that make the occasional spots of red—mostly jelly and blood—pop. Human and vampire characters have skin in varying shades of blue and purple.

GoosebumpsThe Haunted Mask Graphic NovelMaddi Gonzalezn this graphic novel adaptation of one of Stine’s most beloved Goosebumps books, a Halloween mask inspires brutal scares…for a price.

Carly Beth Caldwell is easily frightened; everyone picks on her, from classmates Chuck and Steve to her little brother, Noah. This Halloween, however, she intends to get revenge by using a particularly hideous mask purchased from the forbidden section of a mysterious costume shop. It’s way more effective than her mom’s homemade duck outfit. But, like any horror story curio, it comes with dangerous warnings and high-stakes instructions. As Carly Beth and her best friend, Sabrina, set out for a night of trick-or-treating, Carly Beth finds that the mask makes her absolutely terrifying, but it also threatens to take over her personality, turning her into something of a local menace. Eventually, she finds she’s unable to take it off. Readers who recall the original tale will relish watching timid Carly enact her righteous vengeance at the risk of her own identity. The artwork sells her scaredy-cat reactions as effectively as her masked, monstrous moments. Some comedic elements balance the body horror, such as a cute cameo from Stine and gag comic strips that close out the book. Carly Beth and her family are light-skinned; Chuck and Steve are tan-skinned; Sabrina is brown-skinned.

Goosebumps Monster Blood Graphic NovelMaddi GonzalezAdangerous substance livens up a family visit in this latest comics adaptation of one of Stine’s Goosebumps books.

Evan’s less than thrilled to be spending the next few weeks with his formidable great-aunt Kathryn; she greets him with a bloody knife in hand (she was slicing beef, she tersely explains), and she ominously intones that they’ll have to do something about Evan’s dog, Trigger, when he clashes with her cat, Sarabeth. Evan quickly befriends a girl named Andy after she rescues him from the bullying Beymer twins. Enter a can of the titular substance, sold at an antiques store. The green slime seems harmless, but when it grows and begins coming to life, who will stop its rampage? And what secrets are Kathryn and Sarabeth hiding? The tale’s first half is deliberately paced; apart from some foreshadowing, the scares don’t really start until the monster blood begins threatening lives midway through the book. Gonzalez’s cartoon artwork balances pleasant scenes of Evan and Andy hanging out in their suburban neighborhood with forays into a dark, creepy basement and dramatic confrontations with supernatural beings. Exaggerated character reactions keep the energy level high. Though the story contains some spooky moments—like Evan’s body-horror nightmares in which he and Trigger transform into huge monsters—the scares are never overwhelming. Most characters present white; Andy is Black.
