This template is used for grading of MSc thesis at the Global Health Engineering group at ETH Zurich.

Grade calibration:
5
3.0 = Failed. The student has not met the minimum requirements.
6
4.0 = Bare pass. Minimum requirements met but with major deficiencies.
7
4.5 = Below expectations. Basic tasks completed but significant reliance on supervisor direction.
8
5.0 = Meets expectations. Competent, independent work that fulfills project requirements. This is the benchmark for solid, good work.
9
5.25 = Good. Work that is between 'meets expectations' and 'above expectations' (use when the student's performance falls between 5.0 and 5.5 descriptors).
10
5.5 = Above expectations. Goes meaningfully beyond requirements in depth, methodology, or initiative.
11
5.75 = Excellent. Work approaching outstanding quality (use when the student's performance falls between 5.5 and 6.0 descriptors).
12
6.0 = Outstanding. Exceptional work that would be recognized outside the group (e.g. publishable quality, novel contribution). A 6.0 requires written justification in the comments column.
13
14
Quarter grades (4.25, 4.75, 5.25, 5.75) are permitted. Use them when the student's performance clearly falls between two described levels.

3Instructions for the supervisor
20
(1) Make a copy of this workbook and place it in the student's supervision folder under a subfolder named 'marks'.
21
(2) Open the 01-rubric sheet. For each sub-area, enter a grade in the 'mark' column based on the descriptors. If a sub-area does not apply, enter 'NA'.
22
(3) If you assign a 6.0, you MUST provide a brief justification in the 'comments' column explaining what makes the work exceptional.
23
(4) Open the 02-final-marks sheet. Adjust the area weights in column D if necessary (they must sum to 1.0).
