Anderson, ChrisRCLADRUnpublished "Notes": A former first-round pick, Anderson struggled with length and timing in his delivery at this level back in 2014. After a 2015 season that saw his command and consistency issues continue at Double-A, he returned to the Texas League again to start this year and promptly spun out, posting disastrous numbers in the rotation before migrating to the bullpen, continuing to struggle, and earning himself a return ticket to High-A. I caught him in consecutive outings recently, and his delivery is notably more fluid at the outset than I remember it. But he still had issues maintaining his balance and holding a consistent arm path in each look, leading to command that is still well short of where he'd need it to be in order to pitch in a big-league rotation. He generates quality plane from a higher three-quarter arm slot, but his balls tend to wander into the upper half of the zone more often than they should, mitigating his potentially adventageous angle of attack. The fastball was down a few ticks in a starting role from my last experiences with him, when he would work 93-94 and touch 96; across a four-inning start this time he sat 89-91, while he worked more 91-93 and topped at 94 in a shorter bullpen stunt. His slider sat 82-83 as a starter, jumping up to 84-86 in relief, and he controlled it well in and below the zone in both looks, inducing several whiffs along the way. The changeup remains an illusive pitch, coming in firm in the mid-80's and demonstrating very limited feel. He left it up routinely in the relief effort, yielding a couple long homeruns for his trouble. The lack of progress with the fastball command is disconcerting, and I'd just as soon see him scrap the change at this point in favor of honing in on the primary weapon. It's not a package I'd give up on as a potentially useful bullpen piece, but he'll likely always frustrate with looseness around the zone.

18
Diaz, LuisLESDGRHuge frame, round, soft body, drifts with inconsistent rhythm45/50: 90-94, straight, lacks great life, hitters saw it well, hard contact, plays below velo30/40: 71-72, inconsistent snapping it off, flashes some depth and tight shape40/45: 81-85, sells it well, solid tumble, works off FB plane, got two swinging strikes vs. Ethier in even counts, couple other sw-miss. Hernandez is young and unusually raw for a pitcher at this level, with physical immaturity and inconsistent mechanics. He already shows an ability to drive the fastball to both sides, and there's room for more velo as he matures. Two secondaries both flash around average, though the slider in particular is blood-rare. Lots of interesting pieces here. elements of a mid-rotation start present, long road ahead.
