Join us on Tuesday afternoons to work at the Community Garden on 119th and Amsterdam. The garden was started 15 years ago by CSS students - and is now a public, Parks-department and green thumb community garden dedicated to youth learning and fun. This spring, the garden has an amazing array of vegetables and fruit to plant and care for, and four mischievous chickens. In our afternoons, we will do a mix of hands-on gardening (weeding, planting, harvesting, pruning), chicken care, compost, rainwater harvesting, solar panel maintenance, construction, soil testing, and more - all at the garden. Garden members - with professional backgrounds in sustainability, agriculture and urban planning - will co-lead the programming and have an exciting slate of ideas and connections. This elective will provide students with opportunities to stretch their creativity by exploring different types of poetry and experimenting with them. Each session, students will learn about a different poetic form, read examples of poems written in that form, and try their hand at writing a poem in that form. Students will also work to create a poem in which they have created their own rules, restraints, or patterns. They will write a poem and a poetic statement. Periodically, our meetings will include workshops, in which we share poems with the group and get feedback. As a group we will determine how we would like our work to be shared with the community. | Join the staff of Columbia Pride, the high school newspaper that is committed to reporting on the issues that affect students' lives, giving students a voice, and strengthening the school community. You focus on what you care about. It’s fun. Colleges love applicants with school newspaper experience. A job on CSS Pride can lead to internships and even jobs. Two members of our staff have published articles in national newspapers (for a fee, of course!); one was a summer intern with NBC News. We attend two high school journalism conferences every year. Plus, you get one-on-one help from Prof. Leslie Seifert, our advisor, who worked for many years as a journalist at major newspapers and in national television and was an adjunct professor at the Columbia Journalism School. Besides reporters and editors, we need people to draw illustrations, take photographs, make charts, design puzzles, and help redesign and manage a news website that will add video, photo albums, and interactive features.
