8/13/2016 8:35:08Just to be adivesd. Engineers Pass in mjy opinion should be labeled Red. The west side descending in to Ouyer is laden with sharp bare rock and gullies. I fell once and would not attempt it again. Riding a DR 650 with about 90lbs. Of gear. Sikorsky 1

9/1/2016 18:19:47As always colorado doesn't disappoint.
Picked up the trail after an 18 month hiatus (stupid j.o.b). Excellent views, great trails. The green trail past lizard head pass. Is red all the way, fun, muddy almost invisible trail but a good change of pass. Once you come off the mountain it is gravel/asphalt so definitely green from that point on.
Green trail past lizard head pass is not green it is red, red.Father son bonding

9/18/2016 8:12:04Great,challenging day of riding. This section is long and will take some people all day (it did for us)We found a nice (free) National Forest campground by the Dolores River, NorthEast of Pleasant View. Head North on Farm Road 16, just before Pleasant View and after about 4 or 5 miles, turn R on County Road 28.Slartidbartfast

10/29/2016 20:31:43 Great ride, some of the best scenery on the entire trip not to mention some of the most challenging trails. This section likely take you all day depending on what time of season you go. I wouldn't recommend doing the solo.
We were on able to make it through Imogene pass as of October 26. Engineer Pass is still rideable.

Bikes: BMW G650x & KTM 990 + gear
Engineering pass is by far the best part of the Transamerica trail. Be sure to take a break to take pictures and to check out all the old abandoned mine settlements. Imogene pass was too snowed in at the summit. 3+ inches on top of ice. All but the last 600 yards is accessible.CGGUY09

7/26/2017 20:49:54May 22, 2017 (west to east on Triumph Tiger 800XC's). Too much snow to make any of the high passes, but the ride from Dove Creek to Telluride through the Uncompahgre National Forest by the Dolores River was during the height of the spring bloom and looked like something out of National Geographic. Stored the bikes in Denver and we'll be back in the Sept to ride the high passes and head east.zjmikke

6/10/2018 19:59:45We rode Engineers Pass and found it very tough on KLRs. Also the green sections at the end of Cinnimmon pass was tough for me on a KTM EXC, it would a serious challenge on a big adv bike. Ophir Pass also had rock slides on 6.9.18 which made some sections sketchy. Word to the wise.Engineers pass, Cinnimon Pass, Ophir Pass.Hulluvatime

8/18/2018 19:46:48Ascending Engineer pass and the trail toward Ouray might be tough for a big adventure bike like a GS1200. Black Bear pass has some pucker moments...some rocky ledges and loose rocks...but the views are awesome. Black Bear pass can eat up a lot of time because you have to wait in line for the Jeeps to descend the switchbacks down into Telluride. So plan accordingly.

Dove Creek has a laundry and a deli at the grocery. The deli closes at 9:00 PM but the grocery is open all night.

8/27/2018 20:58:27Rode all 3 passes (Engineer, Cinnamon and Imogene) in Aug 2018 on Honda CRF250L (with about 30 lb of baggage + my 175 lb) in the east-west direction. I am 63, pretty inexperienced rider.
The easiest was Cinnamon, although it merges with Engineer pass trail in the last section (descending to Hwy 550), that is a steep descent with some loose tough, loose babyheads sections..
The Engineer Pass ascent was mostly easy, except for one sharp curve where incoming Jeep forced me into the inside where I just couldn't hold on and dropped the bike. It was so steep that I rolled back two backflips and found myself some 20 feet from the bike. The guys in the Jeep took pictures and thanked me for the show. On the descent to Hwy 550 (the toughest section), I ran into two people in two ATVs blocking the scariest section for some photo opportunities,.almost forcing me over the cliff. They smiled and waved,, while I almost pooped my pants.
Imogene Pass was the toughest one, with its steep ascent close to the top. I managed one spectacular wheelie with a back somersault. It was just too steep. First gear with clutch tortured to the death (the bike has only 24 hp around 8000 rpm). Fortunately. both the bike and I survived. The descent was steep, all babyheads. Tough, all 4 hours of it.
The Jeep, 4x4 and side-by-side drivers (hordes of them), crawling around 2 mph have no idea that the bikes have to maintain momentum to make it. They make the journey quite dangerous and I had 2 close calls just because of their stupidity.duskos3z

6/25/2021 20:11:31Imogene Pass- we did not make it. We got a couple of miles up the road from Telluride to the first steps and steep cliffs and had to turn back. We’re on nc700x and yzf, both with TKC80 tires and monokey luggage cases that each weighed 30lbs. Our bikes were too heavy and too low to the ground. It was scary!Telluride on a Friday night is fun. If you can find lodging that is!Imogene is not for heavy and low clearance bikes. Go around. Native_Power_Ranger

6/28/2021 11:05:46Ophir Pass- we went the opposite way on this pass and didn’t make it. I made it on my nc700x fully loaded with 90lbs of luggage, but I had help by three men pushing me up the last section of scree field. I’m a 35 year old women, 130lbs, 5’7”, so it was tough for me holding into that bike as it bounced me all over the road (thankfully not off the cliff!). My brother, who’s on a yahmaha FZ600 sport bike (R6 engine) with TKC80 tires and a skid plate, only made it half way, but barely. He turned around and went down after seeing me eat it twice on the rock/scree field. Big ADV bikes could do it but only if you’re going east to west (going down the scree field and not up it). We saw a GS1200 fully loaded go down it while we were up there. He looked scared! Rightly so tho! It was easy going down the other side of the mountain towards Ouray on the nc700x. Adv bike be warned, this easy pass is still hard if your bike is big and heavy. Native Power Ranger!
