Teacher/StaffCMSThe Girl Who Drank the MoonKelly Barnhill4-8 / Upper Grades / MiddleA fable - like story that is told through various perspectives. Could drive discussions about stereotyping, perception vs reality, and the meaning of family and belonging. Could be somewhat challenging for 4-5th grade.

teacher/StaffCMS The ArrivalShaun Tan4 - 12 / Upper Grades/MS/HSA beautiful and captivating wordless picture book that follows an immigrant in an alien city and how he adjusts to his new life. Although the setting is a fantastical world, the story can be used to discuss the experiences of immigrants and build empathy. Parallels could be made to historical events that caused people to seek refuge in foreign countries.

Teacher/StaffCMSBull David Ellliottages 14 and up /8 - 12 gradeThe story of the minotaur retold in verse. Traditionally the minotaur is portrayed as the monster, but in this retelling, the story is told from the perspective of the minotaur. You have such understanding and empathy for him. For each character speaking, the style and format of the verse represents the personality of the character speaking. Told in modern language in a format that almost resembles a script, Bull is a fast read that immediatly pulls you into the story, making you not want to set it down! See Elliott's website for more information on Greek and Roman myth: https://www.davidelliottbooks.com/bull *For upper grade advanced high school readers who like this book and mythology, I'd also recommend John Gardner's "Grendel".

Teacher/StaffCMSThe Jolly Postman and Other People's LettersAllen Ahlberg preschool - grade 3A wonderfully illustrated book where the Jolly Postman goes on his rounds delivering letters to all the fairy tale characters. The letters are folded into envelopes within the book, and you can take them out and read them. You can see who is writing to Cinderella, and who is inviting the three bears from Goldilocks to a party. There is also another in this series called, The Jolly Christmas Postman.
