Aberdeen Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) postgrad A201Each year we plan to interview about 60 applicants. This is an opportunity for us to meet you and assess non-academic attributes that are difficult to assess on paper, such as communication skills. It is also a chance for you to demonstrate why you want to be a dentist, ask questions and visit the dental school.YES- We do not have a cut off for the UKCAT. The score allocated is based upon an applicant’s overall performance in the UKCAT compared with the performance of all other applicants to Aberdeen. Achievements are ranked in deciles and allocated the appropriate score. How we use UCAT scores
Candidates' UCAT scores are considered in our selection for interview but are not the sole indicator for selection. They are considered alongside actual and predicted academic achievement in deciding who will be selected for interview. A minimum UCAT cut-off score is NOT used. A score is allocated based on the applicant's overall performance in UCAT compared with all other applicants to Aberdeen (Academic - 60%, UCAT - 40%).

In Aberdeen we will allocate a score based on the total numerical score from the four subtests: verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, decisiong making and abstract reasoning. The SJT will not be scored, but it may be used in offer making when there are candidates with similar scores.

Applicants to Aberdeen offer a broad range of UCAT scores. For 2016 entry:

Applicants: the lowest total score for an applicant was 1580 and the highest 3140. The average score for all applications was 2430.
Interview: the lowest total score for applicants who were invited to interview was 2240 and the highest 3140.
Offers made: the lowest total score for successful applicants who were made offers was 2320 and the highest 2850
We do not consider A-Level results in the academic score. It is based solely on your final/predicted degree result.N/AApplicants must hold a good honours degree (1st or 2:1) in a medical science or health related degree from a UK university. If you are in doubt about the acceptability of your degree please contact the Dental Admissions Office (dentistry@abdn.ac.uk) for advice. Please include details on the courses and content of your degree. For BSc Oral Health Sciences students we would look for evidence of academic excellence in their programme of study. Applicants would need to be able to demonstrate that they have achieved marks that would be at least equivalent level to an upper second/first class performance on their degree programme. This could include details of individual modules and the level of attainment achieved.

Please note: that due to the large number of graduate applicants with 2:1 Honours degrees or better, an additional qualification such as an MSc will not improve the chances of acceptance for those with 2:2 Honours degrees.
N/AN/AN/AN/AUndertake as much work experience/shadowing as possibleYES- We expect applicants to have a clear plan of activity for the year, preferably involving work of a caring nature. Admissions Selectors will certainly look favourably upon applications which include as much relevant experience in healthcare as possible. The decision to apply for deferred entry should be noted on the UCAS form at the time of application. A request to defer once an offer of a place has been given for the current admissions cycle cannot normally be considered. Applicants for deferred entry must complete UCAT in the summer of the year of application.https://www.abdn.ac.uk/dental/study/bds/index.php#panel438-no-

All applicants are expected to have an appreciation of the length of the training programme
and the career structure, and how this relates to their own situation and circumstances. The
selection process for prospective dental students also involves a judgement about the
individual’s ability to meet the academic, physical and emotional demands of healthcare
training. The School recognises that opportunities for certain types of work experience and
participation in some non-academic activities will vary according to individual circumstances,
including an applicant's cultural or socio-economic background, or the activities available in
their local area. Therefore, selectors are not prescriptive about the ways in which the nonacademic selection criteria may be demonstrated but, where asked for, it is expected to be
shown and documented as necessary.
Cardiff University School of Dentistry will consider applicants seeking deferred entry and this should
be stated at the time of application. Applications are made through UCAS in the usual way. The UCAS
form should be amended clearly to show the intention to defer at the point of application. The
individual’s personal statement should include an indication of the reasons for deferred entry.
Deferment of entry for a period longer than 12 months is not permitted.

pplications through UCAS from international students are welcome to the Bachelor of Dental
Surgery programmes. In common with all UK dental schools, the number of places available for
international (non-EC) students is limited.
While the majority of international applicants offer International Baccalaureate or GCE A2 Level
subjects, some other international qualifications are acceptable, these will be detailed in the entry
requirements for each programme.
International applicants are required to offer a recognised English Language qualification which must
include reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Again acceptable qualifications are detailed in
the specific requirements for each programme.
All international category applicants who are being considered for programmes of study leading to
the BDS degree will be required to complete a telephone interview.
International applicants should ensure they have adequate financial resources to support them
throughout their programme. The University will require a financial guarantee that all fees can be
met. It is unable to offer any scholarship to help students meet these costs.
Mature students who are pursuing an Access to Science Diploma or Access to Medicine /
Dentistry Diploma that is recognised by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education
(www.accesstohe.ac.uk) will be considered on an individual basis for entry to the Preliminary
Year (six year) Bachelor of Dental Surgery scheme of study (A204). This entry qualification is
considered acceptable for those applicants who were unable to continue their formal
education at school or college post-16 (e.g. for personal reasons). Preference is given to
applicants who have been out of full-time education for at least four years before their
Access course. It is not an acceptable qualification for applicants who have sat, but failed to
achieve, the necessary grades at GCE A2 Level, degrees, etc.

GlasgowDentistry BDS For admission to the BDS programme, we use Multiple Mini Interviews (MMI's) as opposed to traditional interviews. MMI's require each candidate to undertake a circuit of short activities such as role play, discussion or a practical activity and are designed to assess the attributes required for success in dental practice. Normally, there are 7 stations in total each 6 minutes long, including 1 minute reading time. Students rotate around each station until completing them all. The full MMI process will last just under 45 minutes.

Each station looks at a particular characteristic or competency that we have deemed to be required for Dentistry. There are 3 station types: role-play, discussion and practical

Please be aware that a graduate who has attained a 2.2 Honours degree will not be considered for entry, regardless if they have undertaken an additional qualification such as an MSc.

Graduate applicants who have obtained an MBChB and at least part one of the MCRS may be considered for entry to year 2 of our 5 year BDS programme. However, entry to year 2 is not guaranteed and is dependent on a space being available in year 2. Mature applicants are expected to attain the Highers or A-Levels outlined below, which can be undertaken at Further Education Colleges. Alternatively you could consider an approved Access course. Either option would give you the qualifications to make an application but would not guarantee an offer.

King Colledge LondonDentistry BDS A205Interviews will normally be Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs). Interviewees circulate from one timed station to another and meet several interviewers who will ask structured questions and mark these independently. More information will be sent to applicants who are invited to interview.King’s does not have a threshold UKCAT score in any particular year, but all candidates are still required to take the UCAT examination for this course. The overall UCAT score averaged across the four subtests is given more consideration than the individual subtest scores. The Situational Judgement Test (SJT) is also taken into account when shortlisting.A*AA Biology or Chemistry are required, in addition to studying one of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths or Psychology. GCSE (or equivalent) study of English and Maths is also required. All applicants must take the UCAT (previously known as UKCAT) Please note that A-level General Studies, Critical Thinking, Thinking Skills and Global Perspectives are not accepted by King's as one of your A-levels. However, if offered the grade achieved may be taken into account when considering whether or not to accept a candidate who has just fallen short of the conditions of their offer. Please note that if an applicant is using Maths to meet the subject requirements, we will not be able to accept Further Mathematics as the third A-Level.We encourage graduate applicants to apply to study Dentistry. Graduate applicants do not normally have to satisfy the usual A-level or other entry requirements (e.g. you are not expected to have A*AA at A-level at the first attempt). The minimum entry requirement is grade B at A-level in Chemistry and Biology plus an upper second class honours degree. Alternatively, a lower second class honours degree is acceptable combined with a master's degree (with at least a merit). Graduates who have a sufficient quantity of Biology or Chemistry as part of their degree may not need the A-Level in this subject.

Graduate applicants who do not wish to be considered for A202 may apply directly to A205 and their application will be considered in the normal way. Graduate applicants can list both A202 and A205 on their UCAS form if they wish to maximise their chances of studying at King's.
We will consider applications from those who might be resitting one or more of their school qualifications where there are mitigating circumstances. If you are submitting an application when you have retaken exams, you should ensure that your referee includes further information within the application to provide context for the circumstances, and you should submit a mitigating circumstances form and evidenceAdditionally, grade 6/B in both English Language and Mathematics at GCSE, if not offered at A-level.35 points
Including 766 at Higher Level, and including Chemistry or Biology, and an additional one of Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Maths (either Analysis & Approaches or Applications & Interpretation) or Psychology at Higher Level at grade 6. Note the total point score of 35 includes TOK/EE.

Additionally, grade 5 at Standard Level is required in English and Mathematics if not offered at GCSE.
Not acceptable for entrance to this programme. We would normally expect that applicants will have undertaken some voluntary work experience in a caring/health environment and/or observation in a dental clinical setting. It is important for applicants to have a realistic appreciation of what a career as a health professional involves. Any voluntary contribution to your community is taken into account, eg volunteer in a care home. We look for evidence that you have worked in a setting where you can interact with the general public e.g. in a pharmacy, check-out or restaurant.King’s is happy to consider you if you wish to take a year out to gain some specific experience, earn funds in preparation for your studies or generally broaden your interests. We suggest that you apply in the final year of secondary or further education, indicating in your UCAS application that you will be deferring entry and outlining your general plans in your personal statement. You are also welcome to apply to King’s towards the beginning of your gap year after completing your qualifications.https://www.kcl.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/courses/dentistry-bdsno

LeedsDental Surgery MChD/BChD, Oral Science BSc A200made up of multiple mini interviews (MMIs) In MMIs you move around a series of interview stations. At each station, you undertake a task or answer a few short questions, for which you are scored. The scores at each station are independent of the other scores. Afterwards your scores are computed to give us your overall score and ranking. Your MMI lasts for approximately half a day.

The MMIs help us to assess your attitudes, communication skills, empathy, analytic skills and ethical reasoning, attributes that are in accordance with the NHS Constitution values-based recruitment. Some stations are held in clinics, so you also see our working environment. Most applicants tell us they find the multiple mini interviews a positive experience.

Newcastle Dental Surgery BDS A206The interview will be conducted by two selectors and will last approximately 20 minutes. At the conclusion of the
interview each selector will grade the candidate’s performance and complete an assessment form. These grades are
used as the basis for the decision making process for actual offers. Selectors will not convey their grades to the
candidates at the time of the interview or at any time thereafter.
All applicants are required to sit the UK Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) in the year of application. The UCAT threshold may differ in each admissions cycle. The UCAT scores will be used
to identify those we wish to interview. The UCAT threshold may differ in each admissions cycle as it is dependent on the
scores achieved by those applicants who apply to our Dental School in the current cycle.

Graduates from the University of Plymouth BSc (Hons) Dental Therapy and Hygiene (DTH), who achieve a distinction, are invited to apply to join Year 2 of the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree. This entry route is valid for two years post BSc completion and all applications must be submitted through UCAS between 1 September and 15 October. All eligible applicants will be subject to the standard selection interview for the BDS course and all offers will be conditional. For DTH graduates who do not achieve a distinction the current process, which requires you to sit the GAMSAT exam to apply to join Year 1 of the BDS course, will remain. We welcome applications from re-sit applicants providing a minimum attainment has been achieved at the first attempt. For example: A level candidates need to have achieved ABB for dentistry in the first attempt. For other qualification re-sit criteria please contact the admissions team at meddent-admissions@plymouth.ac.uk. Please note that applicants undertaking re-sits must achieve their final qualification profile for consideration in no more than three academic years i.e. allowing for 1 re-sit year attempt only. There are student welfare support and counselling services, wardens and student health centres on hand if you need themPlease contact the admissions team at meddent-admissions@plymouth.ac.uk if you have studied outside of the UK so we can advise on the suitability of your qualifications. Faculty of Health uses the Graduate Medical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT) as the entrance requirement for non-direct school leavers. GAMSAT assesses your academic aptitude for the study of dentistry. Results from the test will be used alongside the other information contained on your UCAS form to select non-direct school leavers for interview. The results are valid for two years.

GAMSAT is a 5 and a half hours written test that assesses your reasoning in humanities, social science, biological science, physical science and written communication. As this test only assesses academic aptitude, if you're successful you'll still need to show us at interview that you have the appropriate personal qualities to train and practise as a dentist.

Queens, BelfastDentistry BDSInterviews take the form of short MMI interviews and are designed to test a range of non-cognitive skills
such as:
 Resilience
 Maturity and Responsibility
 Interpersonal and communication skills
 Confidence
 Self Awareness
 Empathy
 Ethical and moral values
 Awareness of the demands of training as a dental surgeon All offers are made on the basis of interviews. All candidates will be ranked and a proportion selected for interview. Offers will be made on the results of the interview. There are 15 international places available on the BDS degree and interviews for these students take place online. Entry to dentistry is highly competitive and the scores at interview are used to create
a rank order. Offers are made to the applicants who rank highest after interview.
Should places be available in August, this rank order will also be the primary factor in
considering candidates who have satisfied the academic criteria and are not holding
an offer with any other Dental School through UCAS.
YES UCAT will be scored and used in conjunction with the academic score to rank for interview. For UK and EU candidates UCAT
will be scored using the overall results from four papers. Candidates can obtain up to
a maximum of 6 additional points depending on banding. Banding of UCAT Scores Points Awarded
1200 – 1899 0
1900 – 2099 1
2100 – 2299 2
2300 – 2499 3
2500 – 2699 4
2700 – 2899 5
2900 – 3600 6
For UK and EU candidates UCAT is therefore taken into account at Stage 1 of the
selection process.
AAA at A-level including Biology/Human Biology and Chemistry. GCSE Mathematics minimum grade C/4 is required if not offered at AS-level or A-level.

For A-level School Leavers a maximum of one Applied A-level will be counted. Please also note that only one Mathematics subject will be counted at A-level. A-level Critical Thinking and both A-level and AS-level General Studies are not acceptable.

For NI, GB and EU applicants, GCSE performance in the best 9 subjects will be scored with 4 points awarded for an A* (grade 9 in the new grading scale) and 3 for an A grade (grade 8/7 in the new grading scale). Points are not awarded for B and C grades (grades 6, 5 and 4 in the new grading scale).

For those who have not undertaken GCSE or equivalent level qualifications, then an academic score will be calculated on the basis of school reports.

AS-level performance and additional GCSE A grades may also be taken into account in borderline cases.

Evidence of commitment to Dentistry, motivation, communication skills and initiative are important
Module repeats within the normal two-year
period between GCSE and A-level do not place applicants at any disadvantage. An
A-level taken a year early would also be counted.
Applications from graduates or those in the final year of their degree are considered and the full academic background is taken into account. The minimum A-level threshold (or equivalent in other qualifications) is either BBB at first attempt, ie: prior to commencing degree studies for those with an Upper Second Class Honours degree, or BBC at the first attempt for those with a First Class Honours Degree or a PhD and an Upper Second Class Honours degree. Applicants must have an appropriate science background at GCSE and A-level or equivalent (see below) and at least a 2.1 Honours classification in their primary (first) degree, which can be from a wide range of different subjects. A-level Chemistry and Biology/Human Biology are required. In addition, GCSE Mathematics minimum grade C/4 is required if not offered at AS-level or A-level. Graduate applicants who fulfil these criteria are then scored with their UCAT.

Graduate applicants from a non-science background but who fulfil the conditions in terms of grades achieved at the first attempt (ie in their original choice of A-level subjects) and degree performance will be considered if they undertake the appropriate Science qualifications on completion of their degree.
Due to the competition for places the number of offers made to students resitting
A-levels has to be restricted. Only those who had applied to study Dentistry at
Queen’s at the first attempt and held an offer (if made) as their conditional firm (CF)
choice are considered. In addition they must have achieved AAB at first attempt or a
maximum of one A-level grade below the standard accepted in the previous year, if
lower. (In 2019, this was AAB so applicants who are eligible to be considered as a
repeat applicant for 2020 entry should have a minimum of ABB at the first attempt).
The offer for repeat candidates is AAA at A-level to include A-level Chemistry and
Biology/Human Biology. Only two attempts at A-levels will be permitted.
For repeat candidates at Stage One, 36 points will be allocated for meeting the
A-level grades required to qualify for consideration and points then awarded
according to performance in UCAT (as indicated above) to give an overall score for
short listing purposes. UCAT must be retaken as it is only valid for one application
cycle. In view of the competition for places, it is the policy of the Dental School to allow a
maximum of three attempts (ie applications in three different UCAS admissions
cycles) overall (including applications made to other Dental Schools) to gain
admission and not more than two at either A-level or graduate level.
Please note that this policy will be reviewed and may be amended for 2021 entry
From 2021 entry, in view of the re-alignment of the A* with a Grade 9, scoring will
change to 4 points for a Grade 9 and 3 points for Grades 7 and 8.
36 points overall including 6 6 6 at Higher Level including Biology and Chemistry + GCSE Mathematics grade C/4 or an equivalent acceptable to the University.
BTEC/OCR Level 2 qualifications, considered equivalent to GCSE, are taken into
account and a decision as to how many points to award will be dependent on
performance in individual units, as well as the overall result(s).
We welcome applications from applicants who wish to defer entry to the following year. Applications for deferred entry will be assessed in competition with all other applicants using the same selection proceshttps://www.qub.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate/pdf/howwechooseourstudents/Filetoupload,927402,en.pdf
Dentistry has 15 places for International (non-EU) students. The Admissions
Process will, in the main, take the same factors as above into account plus evidence
of English Language proficiency and examination predictions. International
applicants do not need to take UCAT.
Where applicants have not previously taken any formal examinations (eg either
GCSEs or O-levels) they will be considered on the basis of High School reports and
this information will also be used to assess whether or not they are able to fulfil
subject requirements eg GCSE Mathematics or equivalent.
Online interviews are used and international applicants are not required to travel to
Belfast. Candidates should contact the Admissions and Access Service for advice
on entry requirements.
All applicants are required to provide the required evidence of proficiency in English
Language
no
Applications from candidates who have had a significant break in study and who are
returning to undertake further qualifications are considered individually on their merits
taking into account academic background and UCAT scores in short listing for
interview. Where offers are made, the normal A-level requirements apply and
applicants must also have the appropriate background in the relevant subjects at
GCSE to fulfil the course requirements. The UCAT and the dental interview must be
taken during the year of application.

You will be assessed in these areas using the information you have provided in your personal statement to guide some of the interviewer’s questions. Interviewers expect you to be able to demonstrate that you are well informed about your decision to study dentistry and your decision to study at Sheffield.

As part of the selection procedure, we make an assessment of your interpersonal skills. You will attend a separate assessment after your interview where you will be asked to help a patient or colleague with a dilemma, difficult situation or task. You will not be expected to have any prior knowledge, rather you will be assessed on how you work, communicate or deal with the situation presented. Here we are assessing:

Applicants with a SJT band 3 are welcome to apply. However, we will prioritise applicants who are in bands 1 and 2.Applicants are required to sit the United Kingdom Clinical Aptitude Test (UKCAT). Please note that the result is valid for one application cycle only. If applicants are reapplying, they must re-sit UKCAT.

Further information specific to The University of Manchester is detailed on our UKCAT page .

Please note that we do not consider applicants who achieve Band 4 in the Situational Judgement Test (SJT) element of the UKCAT.

Applicants with a SJT band 3 are welcome to apply. However, we will prioritise applicants who are in bands 1 and 2.
Our standard A-level offer is AAA including Chemistry and Biology/Human Biology. You must also meet the GCSE requirements.

A combination of three sciences is equally acceptable at A-level. However, our offer will not include combinations of very similar subjects, for example, Biology and Human Biology or Maths and Further Maths together.

Where the science A-level syllabus is available with a practical element this also must be offered and passed.

Achieved A-level grades

If you have already achieved your A-level grades (and these meet the above requirements) but do not have the required GCSE grades you may still be considered.

We welcome applications from those re-sitting their A-levels, though applicants may only re-sit one of either Year 12 or Year 13.

Where A-levels have been attempted in Year 13, applicants are expected to have obtained a minimum of grade B in each subject at the first sitting for the re-sit grades to be considered.

All re-sitting applicants are required to achieve Grades A*AA in the A-level subjects specified above, and the A* is expected to be achieved in the final examinations in either one of the dropped subjects at the discretion of the School. We don't accept A-level re-sits for the purpose of improving grades from graduates.

Non-standard educational routes
We welcome applications from graduates or those in their final year of study towards an undergraduate degree. You should have achieved or be predicted a minimum of an upper second (2:1) honours degree and should have achieved a minimum of BBB at A-level (32 in IB) in your first sitting.

Applicants with a relevant science degree are exempted from our subject specification at A-Level, but you must still meet the BBB academic standard. Relevant subjects include most Biomedical and Life Sciences disciplines or other approved courses. Please see our FAQ pages.

Applicants offering other degrees will need to hold at least two science subjects at A-level including Biology and Chemistry.

Please note that we do not accept ordinary or ungraded degrees. If you have a non-relevant degree and don't have the requisite science A-levels you are eligible to apply for our foundation year. Alternatively, you may sit the missing A-level subject(s) and apply for the 5-year course.

We don't accept A-level re-sits for the purpose of improving grades from graduates.

UCAT, Maths at minimum Grade B (6) in GCSE and English Language requirements also apply.

Graduates and final year undergraduates must offer an academic reference on their UCAS form.
We permit GCSE resits. If you are resitting any GCSEs at the point of application, we require you to list it as a pending qualification on your UCAS form.

All re-sitting applicants are required to achieve Grades A*AA in the A-level subjects specified above, and the A* is expected to be achieved in the final examinations in either of the two required sciences.
We require at least seven GCSEs at grade A (7) or A* (8+).

English Language, Mathematics and at least two science subjects are required at GCSE minimum grade B (6). If Dual Award Science or Core and Additional Science are offered, the minimum required is BB (66).

We permit GCSE resits. If you are resitting any GCSEs at the point of application, we require you to list it as a pending qualification on your UCAS form.

We do not currently accept short courses; however, Level 2 BTEC qualifications are acceptable (at distinction grade or above) in lieu of one GCSE.

If you are offering an international equivalent to GCSEs and this is not listed on our international entry requirements page, please contact the School of Medical Sciences Admissions Office to check the suitability of the qualification.

Due to the phased introduction of GCSE reform in England, we will accept a mixture of GCSE grading scales. We can confirm our position in terms of equivalencies:

A* = 8
A = 7
B = 6
C = 4
International Baccalaureate
37 points are required overall (to include core points) with at least 766 at higher level. If Maths and English Language are not offered as part of the Diploma, they should be offered at GCSE or IGCSE at grade B (6) or above.

Major subjects must include Chemistry and Biology, plus one further subject at higher level. We accept both Maths options as part of the Diploma.
We do not currently accept short courses; however, Level 2 BTEC qualifications are acceptable (at distinction grade or above) in lieu of one GCSE.
We require applicants to undertake some relevant work experience prior to application in order that they can gain some insight into what the role of a dentist involves.

Work experience may be paid or voluntary and should include some time spent in a dental setting but can also include examples from other healthcare and related environments. We do not have a requirement on the length of the work experience. We require applicants to demonstrate a commitment to their work experience placements.

As important as the detail of the work experience is the applicant's capacity to reflect on what they have gained from their experiences and the quality of that reflection will be reviewed as part of the selection process.

A key element we are looking for is for applicants to be able to demonstrate some understanding of the qualities and attributes required to become a healthcare professional. Applicants should be aware that we may request confirmation of their work experience.
We welcome applications from students who wish to defer their entry to the following year, but we prefer this to be indicated at the point of application.

It may not be possible to defer entry once an offer has been made and we are unlikely to be able to consider any requests after the release of A-level results.
