10 | Homes/Commons | 8 | Apple | Nancy's tree | not pruned | early August | Nancy’s Apple, very early, drops as ripening. Possible Williams Pride. The Apple Maggot damage will make the apples drop before ripe. This can change the identification. Plus growing in a shady situation will hamper the coloration and I did feel that it had a lot of color on the fruit for how much shade that it gets. Shape is flattened conic to round-conic. Broad ribs. Feel is dry, smooth, soft surface. Color is green and red. Background green to yellow with dark red to light orangey red mixed, streaky mottle blush covering 50 to 75% of the apple. Stem Cavity greenish smooth to rough russet up onto shoulders in rays. Dots submerged, scantly visible, small, matching color on apple and very few russet toward cavity. Cavity acuminate, deep broad, almost compressed, slight lip. Stem curved, askew, exerted, mod thickness, ¾” to 1 ¼” long, slightly pubescent. Basin narrow, acute ridged, ribbed, mammiform, pinched. Sepals small, closed, short, pointed, wide base overlapping. Calyx tube conic, stamen median to marginal, showing outside sepals, reaching to core. Carpels round to narrowing towards basin, no tufting. Flesh almost fragrant, granular, moderately soft. Tart, moderately juicy, mod firm. Apple Maggot Damage.

92 | South Food Forest | 91 | apple | Tolman Sweet | Big Mama | 2/28/21 | November | raked 2/3 and limed | legacy | from Bussey: “ it originated in Massachusetts around 1635…Skin tough, often marked by a suture line extending out from the cavity, sometimes reaching even to the basin; color pale yellow… very late in season – mid November.” Picked early for some tartness but all sweet in November.
93 | South Food Forest | 92 | apple | Golden Delicious | 2/28/21 | lime 12/20 | Golden Delicious or very similar offspring; some are so similar to Golden Delicious that it’s hard to tell them apart. Most are ripen late, like October/November. They tree ripen nicely so when eating is good off the tree, then pick. This specimen is very unripe.
