Dear Visitor,

This spreadsheet tracks every New Testament quote of an Old Testament passage.

I counted only direct, explicit quotations, such as those introduced with “it is written,” or “as it says in the Law of Moses.” I gave some leniency, allowing clear quotations on the list if introduced by a simple “for.”

I did not include any mere allusions or references to people or events in the Old Testament. I also did not include implicit allusions, however clear, to Old Testament texts. I don’t think such allusions are unimportant; I just think they can be difficult to measure. For example, John 1:1 clearly alludes to Genesis 1:1. But does John 10:11 allude to Psalm 23:1, Ezekiel 34:11-12, or 1 Samuel 17:34-37? Probably all of them, as it alludes more to the theme of the shepherd than to any single text. Therefore, for the sake of objectivity, I left all mere allusions off the list altogether, and focused only on explicit quotations. One unfortunate result is that the books of 2 Peter, Jude, and Revelation, which contain Old Testament allusions in almost every verse, are almost completely absent from the list.

Both sheets have the same data. The first is sorted by Old Testament reference (canonical order), and the second is sorted by New Testament reference (canonical order). For an introductory analysis of this data, see http://www.knowableword.com/2014/07/16/the-new-testament-uses-the-old-testament/ and the various lists linked from there.
