The student immediately outlined the innapropriate character of the comment but Mark refused to acknowledge there was any problem with it. The student spoke to the dean to get a second opinion. The dean recognized that the language was unfortunate and organized a meeting with the university' ombud to solve the case. The studio was composed of 85% male students (a ratio which could and should have been avoided). The situation was extremely uncomfortable for the rest of semester and unconducive to a high quality of education. The student was disappointed in having paid Columbia's high tuition fee to receive such humiliating, uneducational feedback AND to have to take measures for Columbia's faculty to be educated as to what is and what is not appropriate behavior towards women. Should the student be paid back full tuition amount, and paid the same sum once more for her educational contribution to a professor tenured by this highly regarded educational institution? Yes.(other person writing) One of my best female friends was doing a thesis with him. He discouraged and disparaged her, was generally unavailable or only at moment’s notice.||4|

When I presented my project, a women's health clinic, he asked for a thorough explanation of what IVF was and then refused to speak directly about/refer to any of the issues the project was trying to tackle. When a woman presents to him, he does not interact with her. He asks follow up questions and provides feedback to other white men in the room but WILL NOT directly address the woman who is speaking. Always trash-talks female clinets, says they are difficult, and then uses female employees (who might not even be on the project team) as props in meetings -so he knows exactly what he is doing, and it is intentional. Talented women are leaving SOM because of him, and HR does not care. Bonus non-misogynistic shitty behavior: has commented repeatedly about foreign accents and limits his interactions with SOM employees from outside the US. So called women's initiative at SOM is a sad farce created as a distraction rather than a solution.||2|

His assistant had supposedly booked my accomodations and I was afraid that he would suggest I share a room with him. Forced studio to follow separate syllabus outside of school guidelines inspite of admin. previously telling him not to. On a weekly basis took selfies of himself w/ the students he liked during class to print in his studio sllyabus next week. Invited himself to reviews just to give his opinion, even when specifically not invited. Overall toxic studio that caused students with no prior mental health issues to experience first-time panic attacks, depression, and anxiety. Peer said he laughed at female student to her face when she told him she experienced a panic attack then proceeded to ask her what it felt like. Unless you have him as a student, you would think his is a nice guy---students know otherwise.||2||Was quiet about extending 1 student's deadline 2 weeks beyond final crit. Admin. did not offer this extension to other struggling students/whistle blowers. Specifically told another student month prior in inital report meeting that extensions were not feasible because "it's a terminal degree" after student inquired. Said student found out only a week before finals that their peer had been offered extension. Reason for inconsistent oversight never made clear. Suspect it would be too public to allow 5 students an extension/admit culpability.||Has been reported to admin. by two different groups of students within within 2 years. About half of his studio came forward each time to report him.||Flawed, inconsistent internal review system. "Talked to him" numerous times. Provided inconsistent or no help at all to second generation of students. I can only speak to my time at Yale but he always advocated for women. threatened, harassed, or dismissed for their participation in the document, and for the document itself as a collective act
against the patriarchal powers and their abuses so embedded in our profession.
