Essential steps for setting up the Conflict of Interest register
2
3
Conflicts of interest occur when an individual’s personal interests conflict with their responsibility to act in the school’s best interests.
4
Board members should disclose all conflicts of interest. Conflicts of interest may be unavoidable, so effective management is critical for meeting the school’s best interests.
5
The Conflict of Interest register allows schools to keep a running document of all ongoing conflicts or potential conflicts.
6
7
1
All responsible persons (not just the board) need to declare any conflicts of interest, including actual, potential or perceived.
8
2
All declarations must be entered into the register.
9
3
Include details of how you intend to deal with the Conflict of Interest.
10
11
It is important to include Conflict of Interest declarations as a standing agenda item at board meetings. Any items declared must then be entered onto the Conflict of Interest register.
12
13
‘Personal interests’ refers to a board member’s own interests, interests of their family, friends, or other organisations they are involved with. It also includes a conflict between a member’s duty to the school or other roles.
14
Type of Conflict (Actual/ Potential/Perceived):
15
Real - you are being influenced by a conflicting interest.
16
Potential - You could be influenced by a conflicting interest.
17
Perceived - You appear to be influenced by a conflicting interest.
