Officials Huddle
Umpire Strikes Back & Nine Inch Wheels
9:00 AM0:30
8:30am PST Daily
Daily officials meeting for all officiating positions. The morning huddle is a time for officials to gather and receive notes for the day, ask questions, sync up and get ready for another day. We review and fill empty spots in the assignments. It's encouraged for all [flat track] officials working (or who want to work) that day, but if you need to miss it, you're responsible for getting the information covered from someone else. No gear is required, but something to take notes with would probably be useful. Banked officials are also welcome, though not required.

Meet in the stands at Track One.

Umpire Strikes Back has been officiating since 2008, where he got his start with the Minnesota RollerGirls. Along with being one of the WFTDA Officiating Clinics first instructors, he also serves on the WFTDA Rules Committee as Chair. Ump is a WFTDA Certified Referee – Level 5 with Rat City Roller Derby. He is also the RollerCon Officiating Director.

Nine Inch Wheels began officiating roller derby at the beginning of 2007 with the Classic City Rollergirls, in Athens, GA, and is currently an Level 5 WFTDA Certified NSO with Rat City Roller Derby in Seattle, WA. Wheels has been instructing at WFTDA Officiating Clinics since 2012. She also served on the WFTDA Certification Committee and currently serves as the Chair of WFTDA Officiating Education. Wheels is the RollerCon Officiating Education Manager.

WED10:00 AM187 Sk8parkMVP: Team Turtle Goes Vertical [BC]Joanna Gruesome10:50 AM0:50
Open to MVP Pass holders with USARS insurance or event waiver. Helmet, wrist, elbow and knee pads required.

Do you dream of shredding at the skate park but have a panic attack thinking about rolling off the edge of the sidewalk to get there? This class is a no pressure, choose-your-own-adventure introduction for skaters with zero park experience. Learn foundation skills, skate park etiquette, how to work with your nervous system, and how to improve without forcing yourself to do terrifying things. If you're so scared that all you can do is look at the ramps, we're one step closer than we were yesterday. You will take home a handy dandy skills list so you can practice at your own pace when you get home.

Joanna Gruesome loves to skate, but she loves teaching even more. After playing derby for four years, starting in 2009, the siren songs of park and fitness skating became too loud to ignore. Joanna is a Chicks in Bowls chapter manager, Skate Ratz Park Rat, co-owner of Colorado Skate Fitness, and RollerCon Skate Park Tour devotee. Her lighthearted and easygoing teaching style makes her classes a great place for beginners to take the pressure off and have FUN!

WED1:15 PMBRG Off-Sk8 AthleticShoulder Pre-Hab is for Everyone!The Smacktivist #3652:15 PM1:00
Roller derby hurts our shoulders. We take traumatic hit after traumatic hit and our shoulders work hard to keep our arms, scapulas, ribs, and collar bones in place (among other things), as well as absorb much of the impact. In this class you'll learn effective pre-hab exercises for your rotator cuffs, that will help prevent injury and address imbalances. These exercises are ideal for skaters at any level and can be worked into a regular workout routine efficiently. Come stabilize your shoulders with me!

The Smacktivist aka Max, formerly a D1 WFTDA skater, is an ISSA certified personal trainer and corrective exercise specialist, from Columbus, Ohio. Max is the face behind Transformation Athletics, which focuses on trauma and mental health informed personal training, and works to challenge the ableist, sizeist, and cissexist nature of the fitness industry. WED2:30 PMBRG Off-Sk8 AthleticOff Skates DerbyShenAnakin Skywalker3:30 PM1:00
Are you a new skater still getting the hang of this crazy sport? Do you concentrate so much on staying upright on all eight wheels that you can't focus on the game happening around you? Enter shoe derby, which removes your skates from the equation so you can focus entirely on executing skills and strategy in action. Until on-skates stability is natural, shoe derby can help new skaters get the "feel" of derby minus the fear of falling. This class will run through basic strategy and rules, and include a modified scrimmage! Ideal for rookies with or without their full minimum skills. Full gear required.

Skywalker has skated just about every rule set out there and draws her knowledge from a wide range of teams and coaching styles. Currently she skates for the Garden State Rollergirls in New Jersey, USA. Drawing on experience as a rookie training leader and coach, Sky specializes in teaching new skaters not only how to execute skills, but why they are necessary. She understands the power of learning by doing and the importance of learning comprehension for a fun, safe derby experience. Her favorite food is calzones.

WED3:00 PMSeminar 13Becoming a Great LeaderIsabelle Ringer4:30 PM1:30
Wed, 3pm PST
There are no such thing as "born leaders." All leaders are a work in progress. It takes lot of practice and the use of deliberate techniques for great leaders to learn how to inspire those around them. Drawing from over a decade of experience in roller derby and seven years as a full-time General Manager, Isabelle Ringer shares her perspectives on the relations of leaders to their organizations, parameters around leadership, and techniques to inspire and motivate both yourself and those around you. This course will be especially helpful for league management, committee heads, coaches, team captains, humans who talk to other humans and pretty much everyone here at RollerCon. This class will be 2/3 seminar followed by 1/3 peer discussion.

Isabelle Ringer has been a member of the San Diego Derby Dolls since January 2006, playing and coaching on both flat and banked tracks worldwide for over a decade. She has a diverse background of derby experience, is incredibly passionate about personal growth, leadership and confidence and loves the sport of roller derby on every surface. Ringer has spent the last seven years as the full time General Manager of the San Diego Derby Dolls, working to grow and promote the sport of banked track roller derby, and has recently been recruited to join the SoCal Derby BOD, as well. In her free time, she can be found jamming for SoCal Derby's WFTDA charter team and raising her two young children.

Coaching Effectiveness: Guiding Skaters to Ah-ha Moments
The Smacktivist #3655:00 PM2:00
Wed, July 25th, 3pm PST
If you're a coach or a training committee member, this class is for you! There's a certain psychology to facilitating learning in others, and it's not always as intuitive as folks may think. Effectively conveying a concept and teaching folks to apply it to real-life scenarios is *tough*! In this class we'll talk about how to interpret drills and skills in relevant ways for skaters of different learning patterns and abilities, how to hold space for skaters to grow, how to facilitate learning effectively, and how to lead skaters to finding their own answers and inner strength. I'll be applying my skills and experience in education and interpretation to coaching principles to help give coaches and trainers the tools to be their best selves!

Max has over a decade's worth of experience with coaching hockey and derby athletes, and has been learning interpersonal effectiveness and effective teaching skills for over 5 years. They have a true passion for guiding skaters, clients, and teams to be their best, healthiest selves through a holistic approach to training and psychology-informed teaching methods that work with individual strengths and ability to help folks feel strong, empowered, and confident.
