Oakland School Volunteers (Year round, but summer is challenging) As an ongoing volunteer with the Oakland Public Education Fund, you will spend one hour a week (or more!) at an Oakland public school. We will pair you with one classroom so you can create lasting connections with teacher and students. Bilingual volunteers who wish to work at Oakland International High School should please indicate as such in their application. There are three ways to become involved as a community volunteer: 1) ACADEMIC TUTORS: Tutor students one-on-one or in small groups in literacy or math. Haven't tutored in the past? Not to worry- our orientation and content training session(s) will give you the tools to help kids boost their reading or math skills.2) CLASSROOM ASSISTANTS: Support an Oakland classroom by being a teacher's aide, prepping materials, sorting books, reading aloud with kids, and more. Activities vary based on the classroom where you volunteer.3) CAREER COACHES: Work with high school students to help prepare them to succeed in this day and age! In alignment with your expertise, you will help students to develop a strong set of problem-solving skills, the ability to adapt, organizational skills, and strong social-emotional capability.

826 Valencia 826 Valencia is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting under-resourced students ages six to eighteen with their creative and expository writing skills and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Volunteer tutors are at the core of how we serve students. You don’t need to be an expert writer. You do need a deep belief in the students we serve and an eagerness to learn together. The majority of our students are youth of color, and we especially seek volunteers and interns who identify as Black, Indigenous, or People of Color.

Volunteers are asked to tutor once a week, either working with students at one of our three writing centers, or by working directly in elementary, middle and high school classrooms in our partner schools in San Francisco.

School on WheelsSchool on Wheels: Online Tutoring with Kids Experiencing Homelessness
Help children experiencing homelessness in Southern California without leaving your room! School on Wheels - a nonprofit providing tutoring to K-12 students experiencing homelessness - needs volunteers to tutor students online.
Volunteer tutors help students close academic gaps and act as a positive role model. Tutoring is completely online. Volunteer tutors work with students over video chat and must commit one hour, once per week, for one year.
Our students are in grades K-12 and live in shelters, hotels, vehicles, and group foster homes throughout Southern California. Tutoring content primarily focuses on English and math, but students often need help with other subjects (such as social studies and science). You only have to work with the grade levels that you feel comfortable with, and tutoring sessions are scheduled according to your availability. We provide extensive training, support, materials, and curriculum, so you’ll always feel prepared. No education experience is required!
To apply, you must be over 18 and live in California. Applicants must complete a Live Scan background check, provide 2 references, participate in a phone interview, and complete a combined 2.5 hours of online training.

ACE CoachesACE Coaches is a Registered Student Organization on the UC Berkeley campus, and since our start in 2015, we have served San Francisco Chinatown by tutoring elementary students (3th-5th grade) who are living in Single Room Occupancies (SROs). Every Saturday during the semester, we hold classes and teach structured lessons to students, and we include topics in English, math, science, and Chinese culture. Last year, we held classes over zoom, with classroom sizes around 20-25 students, and this fall, we are continuing to serve online.

Students who join our org are expected to participate in biweekly, 1-hour meetings to discuss our lessons, and for class, students must attend at least 3 of our classes (Saturdays, 3-4:30pm) and 1 of our in-person meetings (1 Saturday a month, 5-6pm at the SF YMCA) with the students this fall. Bay Area Writing Project (BAWP)For its nearly 50 year history, the Bay Area Writing Project (BAWP) has amplified the knowledge of teachers of writing in classrooms. Its innovative model is based on teachers teaching other teachers. Fun fact: BAWP was the flagship site of the National Writing Project; there are now 175+ local sites housed in universities across the nation!

Fieldwork might include: Participant observation of adult learning in professional development workshops, volunteering in young writers camps, studying BAWP's model of coaching.
