Asalam Alaikum/ Hi/ Hello. I'm Zahraa Saab- a Master of Public Health graduate and health policy professional from the Greater Toronto Area who has curated and compiled this database to address the common COVID-19 concerns of- and questions from- the GTA Muslim community.

This database provides COVID-19 resources, sourced from official public health sources, physicians on the COVID-19 frontlines, and online caremongering groups. According to the MOH, "anyone who begins to feel unwell (fever, new cough or difficulty breathing) should return home and self-isolate immediately. People who are self-isolating should seek clinical assessment over the phone - either by calling their primary care provider's office or Telehealth Ontario 1-866-797-0000. Service Canada HelplineService Canada has set up a dedicated phone line for inquires regarding EI claims related to the COVID-19 pandemic: 1-833-381-2725. Please call this number if:

1. You need to apply for EI sickness benefits because you are unable to work because you must self-isolate for 14 days ( the one-week wait period has been waved for those for whom this is the case);
2. You have been laid off because of the COVID-19 pandemic and are looking to initiate a claim for regular EI benefits, or
3. You are an employee or and employer who is looking to apply for financial support through the EI Work-Sharing program due to the COVID-19 pandemic

Employment InsuranceYou must have a minimum of 600 hours (2nd time application) or 900 hours of work to be eligible for EI (which provides 15 weeks of income replacement). You must request a "Record of Employment" from your employer and apply at the link provided.

-The one-week waiting period for EI sickness benefits will be waived for new claimants who are quarantined so they can be paid for the first week of their claim
-People claiming EI sickness benefits due to quarantine will not have to provide a medical certificate
-People who cannot complete their claim for EI sickness benefits due to quarantine may apply later and have their EI claim backdated to cover the period of delay

Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB)This is an EI replacement benefit for those who do not qualify for EI (insufficient hours or self-employed) or those who need to stay home and support a sick family member.

This will provide up to $2000 per month for up to 4 months. The application will be available in April 2020. Applications are submitted via CRA's MyAccount or MyService Canada Account. If you don't have an account, please create one at the link provided.

Job Leave with Job Protection (Ontario-Specific)-Legislation has now been enacted to allow a leave with job-protection to employees in isolation or quarantine due to COVID-19, or those who need to be away from work to care for children because of school or daycare closures.
-It would be retroactive to January 25, 2020.
-Employees would not be required to provide a medical note if they take leave. However, the employer may require the employee to provide other evidence that is reasonable in the circumstances, at a time that is reasonable in the circumstances. This could include such requests as a note from the daycare or for evidence that the airline cancelled a flight, but not a medical note.

Ontario Education Support for FamiliesThe Ontario Ministry of Education is providing financial support to parents to assist with the costs of educational resources during school and childcare closures. Parents are eligible for a one-time per child payment of:

-$200 for children aged 0-12
-$250 for children with special needs aged 0-21

The province of Ontario has also announced that it will be giving iPads with free wireless data to students who lack access to internet and devices. Public school boards will oversee this process and determine who is elligible.

Auto Insurance RebatesThe Government of Ontario is allowing auto-insurance companies to provide breaks/ insurance premium rebates to their customers for up to 12 months after the emergency has ended. https://www.news.ontario.ca/mof/en/2020/04/ontario-enables-auto-insurance-companies-to-provide-driver-rebates-during-covid-19.htmlAllstate Insurance Co. of Canada is giving all of its drivers a "stay at home payment" of about 25 per cent of their monthly auto premium.

CAA Insurance has said a 10 per cent reduction for a year for both new and existing customers, once they renew, will be automatically applied.

Intact Financial Corp. and Aviva Canada are offering discounts of 15 per cent for customers who are driving less and reductions of 75 per cent for customers who park and store their vehicles.

Most companies are also offering to defer payments for customers in financial difficulty and waive non-sufficient fund fees.

HalalServeHalalServe Food Bank is Canada Zakat’s Food Assistance Program. Its purpose is to address the religious (Halal) nutritional requirements of low-income newcomers, primarily in the South-East Mississauga area.
