2012.10.1212:30peigentalk 7 (co-curricular credit)math3 (PME)Paul Fishback, GVSU"The Least-Squares Property of the Lanczos Derivative"ABSTRACT: In his text Applied Analysis, Cornelius Lanczos presented a technique by which one can ``differentiate'' through the use of definite integrals. His method led to an extension of the usual derivative, which now bears his name. On the surface, Lanczos' formula bears virtually no resemblance to the usual derivative, and, surprisingly very little has been published about it. However, this derivative extension possesses deep underlying connections to basic probability and orthogonal polynomials. These connections serve to demonstrate that a common thread links the Lanczos Derivative to a wide class of derivative extensions and, most importantly, to the usual derivative itself. HYH133

A native of West Michigan, he studied philosophy and theology at Calvin College, has a divinity degree from Duke and is an ordained Mennonite pastor. Before coming to the Forum, Michael served as pastor of Christ Community Church in Des Moines, Iowa. In an earlier life, he also designed and implemented automation systems. 2012.10.2612:30peigentalk 9math4/SHShandelleHensonBifurcations and ChaosProfessor of Mathematics and Chair of the AU Math department -- ABSTRACT: An abrupt change in system behavior that results from a small change in a system parameter is called a bifurcation. For continuous-time systems, there are four canonical bifurcations: transcritical, saddle-noe, pitchfork, and hysteresis. For discrete-time systems we also have the 2-cycle, or "flip", bifurcation. Successive 2-cycle bifurcations can "stack up" in a cascade to a bizare dynamic behavior challed chaos. We will consider these powerful ideas from the standpoint of computations, graphics, simulations, and applications.HYH133
